Chapter 50 - Chapter Fifty: WATCHING

Morning light spills across the tall glass windows of Hale Industries.

Chicago looks sharp and bright under the early sun, the lake reflecting pale silver beneath the rising sky.

Inside the headquarters, the building has already come alive with movement.

Employees walk quickly through the hallways carrying tablets and coffee cups. Conversations echo softly through the open spaces as the day's meetings begin.

Victor Hale stands in the conference room long before anyone else arrives.

The large table stretches across the center of the room, surrounded by sleek leather chairs. A digital screen glows faintly at the far wall, displaying the presentation prepared by the New York team.

Victor doesn't look at the screen.

Instead, he studies the glass wall overlooking the corridor outside.

He is waiting.

Not for the meeting.

For Daniel.

The door opens a few minutes later.

Lina enters first.

She pauses briefly when she notices Victor already standing there.

For a moment neither of them speaks.

Today Victor is dressed more simply than usual—dark trousers, a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms. The absence of his suit jacket somehow makes him appear even more composed.

"You're early," Lina says.

Victor's expression softens slightly.

"I usually am."

She walks toward the table, setting down her laptop and folders.

The quiet between them feels different this morning.

Less tense.

More thoughtful.

Victor studies her for a moment.

"Did you sleep well?"

Lina glances at him.

"Why?"

"You looked tired last night."

"I'm fine."

Victor nods once.

But he continues watching her.

Noticing small things.

The way she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear when she's thinking.

The way her fingers tap lightly against the edge of the table when she's nervous.

He remembers those habits.

Some things never change.

The door opens again.

Daniel Carter walks in.

Victor notices him instantly.

And suddenly everything feels different.

Because now Victor knows something Daniel doesn't.

Something Daniel might never expect.

Daniel looks relaxed as always, carrying a laptop under one arm and a cup of coffee in the other.

"Morning," he says.

Lina smiles faintly.

"Morning."

Daniel sets his things down beside her.

Then he notices Victor watching him.

"Mr. Hale."

Victor nods calmly.

"Daniel."

The moment between them is brief.

But sharper than yesterday.

Daniel senses it immediately.

Something about Victor's attention today feels… heavier.

As if he's being studied.

Daniel sits beside Lina, opening his laptop.

The rest of the team begins arriving shortly after.

Chloe bursts through the door with her usual energy.

"Okay," she announces dramatically, "I refuse to function before coffee."

Lina laughs softly.

Victor watches the interaction quietly.

He notices how naturally Daniel and Lina sit beside each other.

How easily they speak.

How Daniel occasionally leans closer to show her something on his screen.

The familiarity between them is obvious.

Victor keeps his expression neutral.

But inside, his thoughts are shifting.

Because every time he looks at Daniel now

He sees his father.

The resemblance isn't obvious at first glance.

But it's there.

The same sharp jawline.

The same steady gaze.

Victor hadn't noticed it last night.

Now he can't stop seeing it.

The meeting begins.

Presentations move forward smoothly.

Daniel leads part of the discussion about campaign strategy, speaking with the same calm confidence Victor noticed before.

Victor listens carefully.

Not to the presentation.

To Daniel himself.

The tone of his voice.

The way he moves.

The small gestures he makes when explaining something.

Victor's mind keeps returning to the same thought.

My brother.

The word still feels strange.

Across the table, Daniel suddenly glances up.

Their eyes meet briefly.

Daniel frowns slightly.

Victor looks away first.

Later that afternoon, the team gathers in one of the smaller lounge areas inside the building.

The space is designed for informal meetings comfortable chairs, low tables, and large windows overlooking the city.

Chloe collapses into one of the chairs dramatically.

"I'm starving."

Daniel laughs.

"We literally just had lunch."

"That was three hours ago."

"That's not starvation."

Lina shakes her head.

"You're impossible."

Daniel glances at Lina.

"You want coffee?"

She nods.

"That would be great."

"I'll grab two."

Daniel stands and heads toward the café area down the hall.

Chloe watches him leave.

Then she turns slowly toward Lina.

"Okay."

Lina sighs.

"What now?"

"You like him."

Lina raises an eyebrow.

"Who?"

"Daniel."

"That's not a question."

Chloe grins.

"You totally do."

Before Lina can respond, Victor appears near the lounge entrance.

Chloe notices him first.

"Oh."

Victor's gaze moves toward Lina.

"Do you have a moment?"

Chloe immediately stands.

"I suddenly remember I have emails."

She disappears before Lina can stop her.

Victor walks closer.

For a moment neither of them speaks.

Then he says quietly,

"You seem comfortable here."

"It's work."

"That's not what I meant."

Lina folds her arms slightly.

"Victor"

"Daniel is a good strategist."

The sudden shift catches her off guard.

"Yes."

Victor studies her carefully.

"You trust him."

The observation feels heavier than it should.

"Yes," Lina says slowly.

Victor nods once.

But something in his expression becomes thoughtful again.

Because now every interaction he watches between them carries a new weight.

Daniel returns a moment later with two coffees.

He stops briefly when he sees Victor standing beside Lina.

Victor glances at him calmly.

"Daniel."

"Mr. Hale."

Daniel hands Lina her coffee.

"Here."

"Thank you."

Victor watches the exchange quietly.

The ease between them.

The familiarity.

Then Victor says something that surprises both of them.

"Daniel."

Daniel looks at him.

"Yes?"

Victor's voice remains calm.

"We should talk sometime."

Daniel raises an eyebrow.

"About the project?"

Victor pauses.

"Something like that."

Daniel nods slowly.

"Sure."

Victor gives a short nod before turning and walking away.

Daniel watches him leave.

Then he looks at Lina.

"Your boss is intense."

Lina exhales softly.

"You have no idea."

But somewhere upstairs in his office, Victor Hale is already thinking several moves ahead.

Because now he holds a secret capable of changing everything.

And he hasn't yet decided…

what to do with it.
