New York had always been loud.
Chicago felt… deeper.
Lina notices the difference the moment she steps out of the building that evening.
The wind coming from the lake carries a cool bite, brushing against her bare arms as the sun begins to sink between the tall glass towers.
The workday had stretched longer than expected.
Meetings.
Presentations.
Revisions.
Victor had spent most of the afternoon observing quietly, occasionally asking sharp questions that kept everyone on edge.
Except Daniel.
Daniel never looked nervous.
Lina had noticed that.
He answered calmly, confidently, never trying too hard to impress anyone in the room.
Victor included.
That alone made him different from most people in the building.
Now, as Lina walks down the steps toward the street, she finally exhales.
"Long day?"
Daniel's voice comes from behind her.
She turns.
He's walking toward her with his jacket slung casually over his shoulder, sleeves rolled slightly above his wrists.
The late sunlight catches the edge of his dark hair, making it glow faintly.
Lina smiles.
"You could say that."
Daniel joins her on the sidewalk.
"For what it's worth, you handled the presentation better than anyone."
"That's generous."
"It's honest."
They begin walking slowly down the street together.
The city around them hums with evening life now cars sliding through traffic, restaurant doors opening and closing, music drifting from somewhere down the block.
"Are you heading back to the hotel?" Daniel asks.
"Eventually."
"But not yet."
She glances at him.
"You're observant."
"I try."
Daniel gestures toward a small restaurant across the street.
"Dinner?"
Lina hesitates only for a moment.
"Okay."
The place is small but warm, lit with soft golden lights that make the entire room feel relaxed.
They find a table near the window.
For a while the conversation stays light.
Work.
Travel.
Chloe's constant teasing.
Daniel laughs more easily than most people Lina knows.
It makes the evening feel simple.
Comfortable.
Something she hadn't realized she needed.
At one point Daniel studies her quietly over the edge of his glass.
"What?"
"You're different tonight."
"How?"
"You're not carrying the world on your shoulders."
Lina leans back slightly in her chair.
"Maybe I left it at the office."
"Good strategy."
They eat slowly, stretching the conversation long after the plates are cleared.
Outside the restaurant the sky darkens completely.
Chicago becomes a city of lights.
When they finally step back onto the street, the air has grown cooler.
Lina wraps her arms around herself slightly.
Daniel notices immediately.
Without saying anything he slips his jacket off and drapes it gently over her shoulders.
"You don't have to—"
"I know."
But he leaves it there anyway.
The warmth surprises her.
Not just from the fabric.
From the gesture itself.
They walk along the river afterward, the water reflecting the glowing skyline above them.
For a while neither of them speaks.
The quiet feels easy.
Daniel eventually glances at her.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Why did you really leave Chicago the first time?"
Lina looks out over the river.
"Because staying felt impossible."
Daniel doesn't press.
Instead he nods slowly.
"Fair enough."
After a moment he says,
"I told Elena something yesterday."
Lina turns slightly.
"About?"
"My past."
"What about it?"
Daniel rests his arms against the railing overlooking the water.
"I grew up here."
"I didn't know that."
"Not many people do."
He watches the lights ripple across the water.
"My mom raised me alone."
Lina's expression softens.
"That must have been hard."
"She made it look easy."
Daniel smiles faintly.
"She was the strongest person I ever knew."
"And your father?"
Daniel laughs quietly.
"That's the mystery."
"You never met him?"
"No."
Lina studies him carefully.
"Do you ever want to?"
Daniel thinks about it for a moment.
"Sometimes."
"And other times?"
"I think some stories are better left unfinished."
The honesty in his voice makes Lina's chest tighten slightly.
Because she understands that feeling.
More than she wants to admit.
Daniel glances at her again.
"What about you?"
"What about me?"
"You always look like you're carrying history with you."
Lina laughs softly.
"That's very poetic."
"It's also true."
She hesitates before answering.
"There was someone."
Daniel doesn't react immediately.
But she notices the slight shift in his posture.
"Someone serious?" he asks.
"Yes."
"And?"
"It ended."
"That's rarely simple."
"No."
They stand there quietly for a moment longer.
Then Daniel says something unexpected.
"I'm glad it ended."
Lina raises an eyebrow.
"That's bold."
"I'm honest."
"And why are you glad?"
Daniel looks directly at her.
"Because otherwise you wouldn't be standing here with me."
The words hang in the air between them.
Warm.
Dangerous.
Lina feels her heartbeat quicken slightly.
Not from pressure.
From possibility.
Daniel steps a little closer.
Not touching her.
Just close enough that the space between them suddenly feels very small.
"You make things easy," Lina says quietly.
Daniel smiles.
"That's the goal."
She studies him for a moment.
"Easy can be dangerous."
"Why?"
"Because it makes you forget to protect yourself."
Daniel considers that.
"Maybe not everything needs armor."
Lina looks away briefly, watching the lights move across the river.
Because somewhere deep inside her mind…
Victor Hale still exists.
Complicated.
Intense.
Impossible to forget.
Daniel notices the distant look in her eyes.
But he doesn't push.
Instead he gently taps the railing.
"Come on."
"Where?"
"I want to show you something."
They walk a few more blocks until Daniel stops near a quiet overlook along the river.
From here the entire skyline spreads out in front of them.
Glass towers.
Lights.
Reflections dancing across the water.
Lina exhales softly.
"Okay… that's beautiful."
Daniel smiles.
"Chicago has its moments."
She glances at him.
"So do you."
The words slip out before she can stop them.
Daniel looks surprised.
Then amused.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"It was."
Hi The moment between them grows warmer again.
Closer.
But several floors above the city…
Victor Hale stands alone in his office.
Through the tall glass windows he watches the glowing skyline stretch across the horizon.
The lights of Chicago feel different tonight.
Restless.
On the desk behind him lies a thin investigation file.
One page remains open.
Daniel Carter.
Birthplace: Chicago.
Mother: Margaret Carter.
Victor's jaw tightens slightly.
Because he already knows the truth hidden behind that name.
And somewhere in the city below…
His brother is standing beside the woman Victor never stopped wanting.
Victor closes the file slowly.
The game is changing.
And no one else knows it yet.
