Chapter 54 - Chapter Fifty-Four; ELENA’S GAME

The rooftop lounge of the Langford Hotel glows under soft golden lights.

Chicago stretches endlessly beyond the glass railings, the city alive with movement and quiet luxury.

Soft jazz plays somewhere near the bar, blending with the low murmur of conversation from the guests scattered across the terrace.

Elena Moretti sits alone at a corner table.

A single glass of red wine rests in front of her.

She hasn't touched it yet.

Instead, she watches the skyline.

Her thoughts move carefully tonight.

Calculating.

Because earlier that afternoon she noticed something unusual.

Victor.

Victor Hale rarely loses control of a situation.

But today during the meeting, she had seen something flicker across his face when Daniel Carter spoke.

Not anger.

Not irritation.

Something far more dangerous.

Recognition.

Elena slowly lifts the wine glass and takes a small sip.

Interesting.

Footsteps approach the table.

"Mind if I join you?"

Elena looks up.

Lina Moreno stands beside the table, her dark hair falling softly over her shoulders, the evening wind moving the fabric of her light coat.

Elena smiles.

"Of course."

Lina sits across from her.

"You left the office early," Lina says.

"I had a headache."

"That's unusual."

Elena tilts her head slightly.

"You've been observing me too closely."

Lina laughs softly.

"Occupational habit."

The waiter appears and Lina orders a drink.

For a moment neither of them speaks.

Then Elena asks casually,

"How are things with Daniel?"

Lina raises an eyebrow.

"That was direct."

"I'm curious."

"Why?"

Elena shrugs lightly.

"You seem happy around him."

Lina hesitates slightly before answering.

"He's easy to be around."

Elena studies her carefully.

"That must be refreshing."

"It is."

Because Victor had never been easy.

Not once.

Elena takes another sip of wine.

"And Victor?"

Lina sighs quietly.

"What about him?"

"He spoke to you today."

Lina glances at her.

"You already know that."

"I'm good at reading people."

Lina leans back in her chair.

"He asked about Daniel."

Elena hides her smile behind the glass.

Of course he did.

"And what did you tell him?"

"The truth."

"That you like Daniel?"

"Yes."

Elena nods slowly.

Interesting.

"Does that bother you?" Lina asks suddenly.

Elena looks genuinely surprised.

"Why would it?"

"You and Victor have history."

"That's true."

"But that history has never included ownership."

Lina studies her carefully.

"You're not jealous."

"No."

The answer comes easily.

Because Elena's interest tonight isn't emotional.

It's strategic.

She leans forward slightly.

"Victor is a complicated man."

"That's one word for him."

"And men like Victor don't always realize what they're losing until it's already gone."

Lina looks out toward the skyline.

"That's not my problem anymore."

Elena smiles softly.

Good.

Very good.

Because the more Lina believes that…

the easier this will become.

At that moment another figure steps onto the terrace.

Daniel.

He spots them immediately and walks toward the table.

"Am I interrupting something?"

"Not at all," Elena says smoothly.

Daniel sits beside Lina.

The three of them share a quiet moment while the waiter brings another drink.

Daniel glances between them.

"This feels like a strategic meeting."

Lina laughs.

"Relax."

"Too late."

Elena watches them carefully.

The way Lina leans slightly toward Daniel.

The way Daniel's attention naturally centers on her.

The comfort between them is obvious.

And somewhere across the city…

Victor Hale is probably watching everything unfold with increasing frustration.

Perfect.

Daniel eventually asks Elena,

"You've known Victor a long time."

"I have."

"What was he like when he was younger?"

Elena smiles faintly.

"Ambitious."

"That doesn't surprise me."

"He was also… protective."

Daniel tilts his head slightly.

"Protective?"

"Yes."

"But not always in the ways people expected."

Lina watches Elena carefully.

"You're being mysterious again."

Elena simply smiles.

"Am I?"

The conversation continues for another hour.

Light.

Relaxed.

But Elena's mind is working constantly beneath the surface.

Because she's beginning to see the entire picture now.

Victor Hale.

Daniel Carter.

Two men moving around each other like rivals.

Completely unaware of the truth that binds them together.

Elena finishes the last sip of her wine and stands.

"I should go."

Lina looks up.

"Already?"

"Yes."

Daniel stands politely as well.

"It was nice talking with you."

Elena smiles at him.

"You too."

She turns to leave.

But just before walking away, she says something quietly to Lina.

"Don't overthink things."

"What do you mean?"

"Sometimes the simplest choice is the right one."

Lina watches her carefully.

"And what's the simple choice?"

Elena glances briefly at Daniel.

Then back to Lina.

"Happiness."

She walks away before Lina can respond.

Across the terrace, Elena pauses near the elevator and looks back one last time.

Lina and Daniel are still sitting together.

Laughing.

Comfortable.

Exactly where Elena wants them to be.

Because if Lina grows closer to Daniel…

Victor will eventually be forced to reveal the truth.

And when that moment comes…

The entire world Victor Hale built so carefully will begin to crack.

Elena steps into the elevator with a small, knowing smile.

The game has started.

And she intends to enjoy every second of it.
