Chapter 63 - Chapter Sixty-Three:LINES BETWEEN THEM

Morning in Chicago arrives with bright sunlight spilling across the glass towers that line the river. The city is alive earlier than usual today traffic humming steadily, taxis weaving through intersections, and office buildings glowing with movement behind their polished windows.

Inside Hale Industries, the energy feels sharper.

Focused.

Because today is important.

The New York team is presenting the final expansion proposal to the board.

Lina Moreno steps out of the elevator beside Chloe, clutching her tablet lightly against her chest.

She's dressed with careful intention today.

A fitted ivory blouse tucked into a high-waisted charcoal pencil skirt that falls just below her knees. The fabric moves smoothly as she walks, elegant but professional. A slim black belt defines her waist, and her heels classic black stilettos click softly against the marble floor.

Her hair is pulled back into a sleek low bun, leaving a few soft strands framing her face.

Chloe insisted on the look.

"Powerful but not intimidating," she had said earlier that morning.

Chloe herself walks beside Lina in a tailored navy dress and a cropped blazer, looking every bit the confident strategist she is.

"You ready?" Chloe asks.

Lina exhales slowly.

"As ready as I'll ever be."

Chloe nudges her shoulder.

"You've handled worse."

Lina doesn't respond immediately.

Because Chloe doesn't realize the real challenge isn't the presentation.

It's Victor.

They step into the large conference hall where several executives are already gathering around the long polished table.

Quiet conversations fill the room.

Laptop screens glow.

Coffee cups sit scattered across the table.

And at the far end of the room…

Victor Hale.

He stands beside the floor-to-ceiling windows speaking with two board members, his posture relaxed yet commanding.

Today he's wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit.

The jacket sits flawlessly across his shoulders, paired with a crisp white shirt and a deep midnight-blue tie. His dark hair is styled neatly, and the expensive watch on his wrist catches the light as he gestures calmly during the conversation.

Even across the room, Victor's presence dominates the space.

Lina feels the familiar tightening in her chest.

It's ridiculous.

Months have passed.

She has rebuilt her life.

And yet the moment she sees him…

Something inside her reacts.

Chloe notices immediately.

"Still dangerous?"

Lina keeps her eyes forward.

"Still Victor."

Chloe smirks.

"Fair answer."

Across the room Victor turns slightly.

His gaze moves across the gathering executives—

Then stops.

For a brief second the entire room fades from his awareness.

Lina.

Standing near the door beside Chloe.

Calm.

Professional.

Beautiful in a way that catches his attention instantly.

Victor's expression remains controlled.

But something flickers behind his eyes.

Because the last time he saw her…

Everything between them had been unresolved.

He forces his attention back to the conversation with the board members.

But his awareness of Lina remains constant.

Daniel enters the room a moment later.

He walks in carrying a tablet, dressed in a sharp dark navy suit with a simple white shirt open at the collar.

His style is slightly more relaxed than Victor's.

But still polished.

Still confident.

He notices Lina immediately.

A warm smile spreads across his face as he approaches.

"Morning."

Lina's expression brightens slightly.

"Morning."

Daniel glances at Chloe.

"Chloe."

"Daniel."

Chloe studies him carefully.

Something about Daniel has always intrigued her.

There's an ease to him that makes people comfortable.

But today she notices something else.

Victor.

Standing across the room.

Watching.

Just for a moment.

Daniel doesn't notice.

But Chloe does.

And her curiosity sharpens.

The meeting begins shortly after.

Everyone takes their seats.

Lina sits beside Daniel at the center of the table while Chloe sets up the presentation.

Victor sits at the far end with the board members.

The distance between them feels deliberate.

Professional.

Necessary.

Chloe begins confidently.

"Our team has spent the past six months developing an expansion strategy that connects New York's creative market with Chicago's corporate infrastructure."

Slides appear on the large screen behind her.

Charts.

Growth projections.

Market analyses.

Lina speaks next, her voice calm and clear as she explains the creative direction of the campaign.

Daniel follows with the financial strategy.

Together the three of them move through the presentation smoothly.

Confident.

Prepared.

Victor listens carefully.

But his attention drifts occasionally.

Toward Lina.

The way she gestures while explaining a concept.

The soft confidence in her voice.

The way she looks completely at ease beside Daniel.

Victor's jaw tightens slightly.

Because he knows something now that neither of them does.

Daniel Carter.

His brother.

And the woman between them…

Lina Moreno.

The presentation ends to quiet murmurs of approval from the board.

One of the investors nods.

"Impressive work."

Another adds,

"This partnership could be extremely profitable."

Victor finally speaks.

His voice calm and measured.

"Agreed."

The room quiets immediately.

Victor stands slowly.

"The board will review the final numbers this afternoon."

He looks toward Lina and Daniel briefly.

"Excellent work."

The meeting begins to dissolve as executives gather their papers and leave the room.

Lina exhales quietly.

Chloe leans toward her.

"You nailed that."

"Thanks."

Daniel smiles.

"Lunch to celebrate?"

Chloe immediately answers.

"Yes."

Lina laughs softly.

"Very subtle."

Daniel shrugs.

"I'm predictable."

Across the room Victor watches them for a moment longer.

Then Elena arrives.

She enters the conference hall like a quiet storm of elegance.

Her silver silk blouse catches the light softly as she walks, paired with high-waisted black trousers and delicate diamond earrings that shimmer with every step.

Elena Hale knows exactly how to command attention without trying.

Her eyes move across the room

Then land on Lina.

A slow, knowing smile appears.

"Miss Moreno."

Lina straightens slightly.

"Mrs. Hale."

Chloe whispers under her breath.

"This should be interesting."

Elena approaches the table gracefully.

"I must say," she says calmly, "that presentation was impressive."

"Thank you."

Elena's gaze flickers briefly toward Daniel.

"And you must be Daniel Carter."

Daniel stands politely.

"Yes."

Elena studies him carefully.

Something about him feels familiar.

She can't explain it.

But the feeling lingers.

"Well," Elena says lightly, "Chicago is lucky to have such talented visitors."

Daniel smiles politely.

"Thank you."

Victor watches the exchange quietly.

Because Elena has no idea what he discovered yesterday.

And neither does Daniel.

But the tension in the room has already begun to change.

Lina senses it.

Chloe senses it.

Daniel feels it too.

Something beneath the surface.

Invisible.

Unspoken.

As the group begins leaving the conference room, Victor remains standing near the window.

His eyes follow Daniel briefly.

Then Lina.

Two people who have unknowingly walked directly into the center of his past.

Victor exhales slowly.

Because the truth he uncovered is no longer just information.

It's a storm waiting to break.

And Lina Moreno now stands directly between two men connected by blood…

Even if neither of them fully understands it yet.
