Chapter 70 - Chapter Seventy :THE ILLUSION OF MOVING ON

Lina knew the night was going to be complicated long before she stepped out of her apartment.

It wasn't the dress. It wasn't the quiet hum of the city outside her window or the soft glow of lights reflecting against the glass. It was something deeper ,something unsettled, sitting just beneath her skin like a thought she couldn't quite silence.

She stood in front of the mirror for a moment longer than necessary, smoothing her hand over the fabric of her dress.

Black. Simple. Elegant.

Safe.

At least, it was supposed to feel that way.

Her reflection stared back at her, composed and put together, but her eyes betrayed her. There was hesitation there. Conflict.

"You're overthinking this," she murmured softly.

It was just dinner.

Just Daniel.

Just….

Victor's voice cut through her thoughts before she could stop it.

Tell me you don't feel it.

Lina exhaled sharply and looked away from the mirror.

"No," she said quietly, more to herself than anything else. "Not tonight."

Tonight was supposed to be different.

It had to be.

Daniel was already waiting when she arrived.

Of course he was.

He stood near the entrance of the restaurant, hands tucked casually into his pockets, his posture relaxed in a way that made everything about him seem effortless. The dark button-down shirt he wore fit him perfectly, the sleeves rolled just enough to reveal his forearms, familiar now in a way Lina didn't want to think too much about.

When he saw her, his expression shifted not dramatically, but enough for her to notice.

Something warmer. Softer.

"Hey," he said.

"Hey."

For a brief second, they just stood there, looking at each other like they were both adjusting to something unspoken.

Then Daniel smiled slightly. "You look amazing."

Lina felt the words settle somewhere deeper than she expected. "Thank you."

"You always look good," he added, quieter now. "But tonight feels… different."

Her breath caught faintly. "Different how?"

Daniel studied her for a moment before answering. "Like you decided to be here."

The honesty in that caught her off guard.

Because he wasn't wrong.

And somehow, that made it harder.

"Maybe I did," she said.

His smile deepened just a fraction. "Good."

Dinner started easily.

It always did with Daniel.

That was the thing about him nothing ever felt forced. Conversations didn't need effort. Silence didn't feel heavy. Everything just… moved naturally, like there was no pressure to be anything other than what they were.

They talked about work at first. The campaign. The chaos of the office. Chloe's dramatic reactions to everything.

Lina laughed—and for a while, she forgot the weight she'd been carrying.

Daniel noticed.

"You're doing it again," he said, leaning back slightly in his chair.

"What?" she asked.

"That thing where you forget to be stressed."

She raised an eyebrow. "I don't do that."

"You do," he replied easily. "And it's my favorite version of you."

The words were simple, but they lingered.

Lina took a sip of her drink, trying not to think about why they affected her the way they did.

"You observe too much," she said.

"Occupational hazard."

A quieter moment settled between them after that. Not awkward—just more intentional. More real.

Daniel's expression shifted slightly, his gaze more focused now.

"Can I ask you something?" he said.

Lina nodded slowly. "Okay."

He didn't rush the question, didn't soften it or dress it up.

"Why did you say yes tonight?"

The question caught her off guard.

Of all the things he could have asked, that wasn't what she expected.

"I…" she started, then stopped.

Because the easy answer wasn't the honest one.

Daniel didn't interrupt. He just waited.

Lina exhaled quietly. "Because I wanted to."

His gaze held hers. "Or because you're trying to?"

The follow-up was gentle, but it landed.

She looked at him properly then, letting herself sit in the truth for a second instead of avoiding it.

"A little of both," she admitted.

Daniel nodded once.

No disappointment. No frustration. Just understanding.

"Fair."

And somehow, that made her chest tighten more than if he had reacted badly.

Because he wasn't making this difficult.

He was making it easy.

And easy should have been enough.

When they stepped outside, the air was cooler, carrying the quiet energy of the city at night.

They walked side by side, close but not touching. The silence between them felt different now—more aware, more deliberate.

Daniel glanced at her. "You're quieter."

"I'm thinking."

"That's dangerous."

She smiled faintly. "Very."

They stopped at the edge of the street, neither of them moving to cross.

The moment stretched.

Then Daniel turned slightly toward her, closing some of the space between them.

"You don't have to figure everything out tonight," he said softly.

Lina met his gaze. "I know."

"Good."

A brief pause followed before he spoke again.

"I just need to know one thing."

Her heart picked up slightly. "What?"

"Are you here with me right now?"

The question was simple.

But it carried weight.

Lina didn't look away this time.

"Yes," she said quietly.

And this time, she meant it.

Something in Daniel's expression softened, relief flickering briefly before something warmer replaced it.

He stepped closer.

Now there was no space between them.

Lina felt it immediately—the shift in the air, the awareness, the quiet tension building between them.

But it wasn't overwhelming.

It wasn't chaotic.

It was steady.

Daniel's hand lifted slowly, giving her time to stop him.

She didn't.

His fingers brushed lightly against her arm, warm and careful.

Lina's breath caught.

The world seemed to narrow around them.

Daniel leaned in slowly—slow enough for her to see it coming, slow enough for her to choose.

And for a second… she wanted to let it happen.

No complications.

No past.

No weight.

Just this.

Just him.

Just something simple.

But then,

Victor's voice echoed in her mind.

You don't feel anything different.

Her chest tightened instantly.

Her breath faltered.

And just before Daniel closed the distance .

Lina stepped back.

The moment broke.

Daniel stilled immediately.

No frustration. No confusion.

Just quiet understanding.

"I'm sorry," Lina said softly.

"You don't have to explain," he replied gently.

But she did.

"I don't want to hurt you."

Daniel studied her for a second, then nodded.

"You're not," he said. "But you might."

The honesty in that hit harder than anything else that night.

Lina swallowed. "I don't want to."

"I know."

He stepped back slightly, giving her space.

"That's why you stopped," he added.

She nodded.

"Yes."

A quiet pause settled between them.

"Okay," he said simply.

No anger.

No pressure.

Just acceptance.

And somehow, that made it harder to breathe.

As they stood there under the soft glow of city lights, Lina realized something she could no longer ignore.

Daniel was easy.

Safe.

Steady.

But when it mattered most…

She hadn't pulled away because of him.

She had pulled away because of someone else.
