At the Iron Dragon's offensive behavior, the Six-armed Serpent Woman Naris's vertical pupils constricted into thin slits.
She rose slowly, her armsâpreviously folded like flower petals in front of herâunfurling as her long fingers spread slightly.
Swish, swish, swish!
Six cold-iron longswords broke the surface of the swamp, yet not a single ripple disturbed the water.
The Venomtail Tribe was known for producing sorcerers and shamans, but its chief, the Six-armed Serpent Woman Naris, was an uncompromising warrior of exalted status.
The warrior advancement path she had chosen wasâSword Saint.
Sword Saint:Â The fusion of soul and steel. Merging life and soul into the blade's edge, achieving unity of man and sword to manifest supreme power.
The Serpent Woman gazed coldly at the Iron Dragon, her swords gleaming with sharpness, yet she did not strike rashly.
Opposite her, Iron Dragon Solgorn's scales pulsed slightly as he watched the Serpent Woman's six arms unfold like a dance. Each arm held a longsword in a completely different starting stance, yet together they formed a flawless system of offense and defense.
In the tense, murderous atmosphere, the croaking of frogs in the depths of the swamp abruptly ceased.
"A six-armed serpentfolk Sword Saint... a truly blessed combination of race and class."
Iron Dragon Solgorn's voice broke the deathly silence. He didn't hide his admiration as he said, "You possess not only beauty and wisdom but also formidable power."
The Serpent Woman's vertical pupils flashed dangerously, and her six longswords hummed in unison.
"This power is enough to strip your scales one by one, carve your skeleton whole from your flesh, and finally mince you into meat paste."
Solgorn flicked his tail lightly in agreement. "I have no doubt about that."
Then, he shifted his tone. "But my safety is of little consequence. Today, I represent the entire Ironforged Tribe, and even more soâ"
A silver dragon scale, radiating a piercing chill, suddenly appeared between his claws.
"âthe will of Lord Frostmark."
The moment that silver scale met her eyes, the Serpent Woman's body visibly stiffened for a split second, and the wariness in her gaze deepened.
Buzzâ!
An elderly serpentfolk shaman elder waved his bone staff. Invisible ripples surged toward the Serpent Woman's body, flickering once before vanishing.
At the same time, Iron Dragon Solgorn found he could no longer sense the Serpent Woman's mental fluctuations.
Evidently, the serpentfolk elder had seen through his identity as a mind mage and cast a spell to block the iron dragon's mind sense from reaching the Serpent Sword Saint.
Yet, the iron dragon's expression remained unchanged.
Since becoming a mind mage, his insight into emotions had improved significantly. Even without mind sense, he could discern her emotional reactions through the slightest changes in the serpentwoman's facial expressions and body language, though the information was less direct.
"Frostmark, metal dragon overlord of the Frontierlands."
The Serpent Sword Saint forced her gaze away from the silver scale. "He is a silver dragon. How could he possibly be allied with evil dragons like you?"
"Don't assume we know nothing about dragonkind," she continued. "Though we don't know how you came to possess this scale, Silver Dragon Frostmark would never support you."
A faint, knowing smile touched the iron dragon's lips at her words.
"Have you ever been a dragon?" he asked with a hint of mockery. "Of course not."
"The relationships within the dragon race are far more complex than you can imagine. It's never as simple as black and white. How could an outsider like you possibly understand? Your assumptions are nothing more than wishful thinking."
The iron dragon stood tall, his chest puffed out as he surveyed the surroundings, as if he were the true lord of the Swamp of the Dead.
Under the collective gaze of the serpentfolk, he continued, "Besides, you have already encountered metallic dragons in our territory, haven't you?"
The Serpent Woman fell silent.
After a few seconds, she spoke, "Iron Dragon, state your purpose first. Why have you come here?"
Solgorn's expression suddenly turned grave, and his voice dropped several tones. "Regardless of the process, regardless of the price we must pay, the Ironforged Tribe will eventually become the overlord of the Frontierlandsâit is only a matter of time."
"Naris, you are not like those foolish barbarians and orcs. You know very well that this is an unalterable reality."
He spoke unhurriedly, "You can either ally with Dawn and Iron Blood, fight us to the death, and be crippled or crushed in the aftermath... or you can choose to submit to the Ironforged Tribe now. That way, when the war ends, you will still hold a position of transcendence in the Frontierlands."
The Iron Dragon had presented two choices.
"What guarantee do you offer?" the Serpent Woman retorted sharply. "That we won't be used as cannon fodder after surrendering? Such empty promises are meaningless. The Venomtail Tribe will never bow down for a few pretty words."
Hearing her resolute words, the Iron Dragon roughly grasped the Serpent Woman's attitude and thoughts.
He swayed his tail and continued, "I see commendable courage in your serpentfolk, which is indeed worthy of respect. But courage cannot change reality. The Ironforged Tribe will soon demonstrate enough power to make you change your mind."
The Six-armed Serpent Woman coiled on her throne and said, "Then I shall wait and see. But for now, do not dream of gaining the Venomtail Tribe's allegiance. We have our own principles and judgment."
The Iron Dragon smiled. "Time is long, and I am very patient. I will not rush things."
The Serpent Woman weighed her words carefully before deciding to reveal more information. "To tell you the truth, before you arrived, messengers from the Dawn and Ironblood Tribes had already been here, trying to persuade us to form an alliance to jointly oppose your Ironforged Tribe."
She narrowed her eyes, closely observing the Iron Dragon's reaction.
"This is within my expectations."
The Iron Dragon's reaction was unnervingly calm.
"However, you must not have accepted their proposal."
The iron dragon's composure surprised the Serpent Woman. It was a stark contrast to her perception of the dragon race as hot-tempered and volatile, even making her question some of her own deeply held beliefs.
"You only guessed half of it right."
She revealed frankly, "We had indeed decided to accept the invitation to ally, but the Frostmark's Scale you brought made me reconsider."
"We have decided to adopt a strategy of delayâneither explicitly agreeing to their alliance request nor allying with or submitting to your Ironforged Tribe. As long as the fires of war do not spread to our territory, the Venomtail Tribe will remain absolutely neutral."
