Night Chase
The headlights outside the cabin grew brighter.
Ryan peeked through the broken window.
"Three vehicles," he whispered.
Victor grabbed his jacket.
"They found us faster than I thought."
Ariba took a deep breath.
"We can't stay here."
Suddenly the sound of doors slamming echoed outside.
Armed men were stepping out of the vehicles.
Ryan quickly shut the laptop and grabbed the flash drive.
"Time to move."
Victor opened the back door of the cabin.
"Follow me."
The three of them ran into the dark forest again.
Branches scratched their arms as they pushed forward.
Behind them, voices shouted.
"Search the area!"
Flashlights began scanning the trees.
Ariba's heart pounded loudly.
Ryan whispered,
"They're getting closer."
Victor suddenly stopped near a steep hill.
"Down there."
Ariba looked down.
A narrow river flowed through the forest.
"You want us to jump?"
Victor smiled slightly.
"Trust me."
Gunshots suddenly rang out behind them.
Bullets hit the trees.
Without hesitation, Victor jumped into the river.
Ryan and Ariba followed.
The cold water carried them quickly through the dark forest.
Above the hill, the armed men arrived seconds later.
But the river had already taken them away.
Far away, in a dark control room, the Architect watched the drone footage.
He leaned back in his chair.
"They're clever."
Then he smiled slowly.
"But not clever enough."
