An endless canopy of trees cast dancing shadows at their feet. Two days of trekking had left Bai Wanwan exhausted.
"How much farther?"
Bai Wanwan leaned against a tree trunk, panting slightly.
She had thought this journey would be a leisurely outing, but she'd underestimated how treacherous the Primitive Forest was.

Before she could answer, he had already lifted her steadily into his arms.
Bai Wanwan cried out softly. He grinned, his fangs showing. "Still tired?"
Bai Wanwan reached out and wrapped her arms around his neck.
The young man's arms were as solid as cast iron, carrying a warm, sun-baked scent.
Though she reveled in the comfort, she still punched him lightly on the shoulder. "Put me down. You've already been carrying the prey for so long."
"You don't even weigh as much as a fawn."
