Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Phone Rang

"Alaric, I'm not trying to be difficult, but your brother is young and immature. Don't blame me for being harsh and striking your fiancée. This has all become so ugly. How are we supposed to clean it up?"

"I only have one mother," Alaric Davenport said, his gaze sweeping over everyone present. "I will get to the bottom of who passed that note. In any case, this matter has nothing to do with my future wife."

With that, Alaric Davenport pulled Rosalind Lowell away.

Jessica Sutton frowned, an indescribable emotion spreading through her.

"Alright, everyone, break it up. It was just a farce. We're all reasonable people; you know what to do." Ethan Lockwood stayed behind to clean up the mess.

The others also slowly dispersed.

The matter ultimately ended with a maid taking the fall. The story was that she was secretly in love with Julian Davenport and had set up the Lowell sisters. With that, everyone had an explanation and said no more.

After all, they were all future heirs to their families; they would never take such petty squabbles too seriously.

Faye Lowell, now a laughingstock, was filled with regret. If she had known, she never would have let so many people in on the plan. But Rosalind Lowell… after all these years, Faye realized she had truly underestimated her. Having failed to achieve her goal, she had no intention of letting Rosalind off so easily.

...

Soon, their wedding was on the agenda.

The Davenport family handled all the wedding arrangements, including the gowns. Many were designed and custom-made to her measurements, and she had to try them on one by one.

All she could do was cooperate.

As if the two hundred million bride price wasn't enough, the Davenport family sent batch after batch of betrothal gifts to the Lowell family.

Herman Lowell considered that the more gifts that arrived, the more he would have to share with Yasmine Kimball. The more he thought about it, the more displeased he became.

Faye Lowell kicked a box of betrothal gifts. 'These were all supposed to be mine. If I had successfully married Julian Davenport that day and managed to frame Rosalind, all of this would have been mine.'

She returned to her room and paced back and forth before picking up her phone and making a call…

Rosalind Lowell was at the wedding rehearsal, but Alaric Davenport never showed up. The spot next to her remained empty.

She didn't know why Faye Lowell was there, either. Faye had simply told her she'd never seen a grand wedding up close and wanted to see how it all worked.

Rosalind was too tired to bother with her. All she wanted was for the wedding to go off without a hitch.

The wealthy circles were very discreet. Neither the engagement party nor the wedding had any media presence or reports. The secrecy was handled very well.

She got through the final rehearsal and sighed in relief. The wedding was tomorrow, and she was still a little nervous.

The wedding planner spoke to her politely. "Miss Lowell, you can go home now. Get a good rest today so you can be a beautiful bride tomorrow."

"Thank you."

'Everyone involved with the wedding is being so nice to me. Alaric must have said something. I'm the future Mrs. Davenport, after all, so they're all treating me well out of respect for the Davenport family.'

She was just about to head back when her phone suddenly rang.

"Hello, Miss Lowell, do you remember me? It's Elsa Ainsworth, from the cruise ship the other day."

"Yes, Miss Ainsworth, I remember you. Is there something you need?"

"Are you busy right now? Would you be free to meet and talk?"

Rosalind Lowell glanced at the time. It was still early. Besides, it was the first time anyone had ever asked to meet with her like this, so she agreed.

A private room in a luxurious coffee shop.

"Thank you for the other day, for helping me up." Elsa Ainsworth sat with an elegant and dignified posture.

Her voice was also very gentle. She was the very picture of a well-bred lady, but there seemed to be a constant, faint sadness in her eyes.

"It's nothing, Miss Ainsworth. You're too kind. If I hadn't rushed up there so impulsively, you wouldn't have been startled."

Elsa Ainsworth nodded. She looked like she wanted to say something but stopped herself, instead taking a sip of her coffee to hide her awkwardness.

"Miss Ainsworth, if there's something you want to say, it's okay. If you trust me, you can tell me."
