A knock at the door startled me as a familiar voice came from the other side, "My lady?"
Realizing it was Mary, I sighed in relief. I shoved the letter under Selene's invitation before she could see it, and put both the letters in the drawer. Smoothing my gown and composing my expression, I replied, "Yes, come in."
She entered carefully, carrying a silver tray with dinner laid neatly upon it. The faint smell of roasted meat and warm bread filled the room almost instantly. A small bowl of soup rested beside sliced fruits and tea, simple but far better than anything I had expected.
"You barely ate this afternoon, my lady," she said softly, concern slipping into her voice.
"I thought you might be hungry," Mary added while placing the tray down on the table before turning toward me again. For a moment, I simply stared at the food.
