The gate collapsed behind them.
The instant the last of them crossed the threshold, the fracture hanging above the coastline twisted inward like a dying star. Then it imploded. A ripple of warped air rolled outward across the sea, bending the light for a moment before snapping back into place. The violet tear that had dominated the sky for hours folded in on itself and vanished.
Silence followed.
For several long seconds, no one moved. The shoreline looked like the aftermath of a storm. Concrete barricades had been pushed aside during the gate's appearance. Emergency lights still burned along the coastal road. Government drones hovered overhead, their cameras fixed on the empty sky where the gate had existed only moments ago.
Lucien exhaled slowly. "...Everyone here?"
Seris was already moving. Soft gold light flowed from her hands as she passed through the group, checking injuries with calm efficiency. "Minor fractures," she said quietly. "Mana exhaustion." Her gaze settled briefly on Lucien. "You overextended."
Lucien offered a tired smile. "I'm standing."
"You still overextended."
Nearby, Garrick lowered himself onto a half-collapsed barrier and rolled his shoulders with a groan. "...I think I just fought a mountain."
Mira dropped onto the sand beside him with all the grace of a falling sack. "I'm pretty sure that thing was a mountain." She stretched her arms dramatically. "I'm not summoning anything for the next twelve hours."
Orion, standing a short distance away while brushing sand from his bow, didn't even look up. "...You'll summon something again in twenty minutes."
"Orion."
"Yes."
"You are a terrible friend."
Kaida wasn't listening to them. She was staring at the sky. The fractures were gone now. The heavens looked almost normal again. Almost.
__
Military vehicles were already approaching from the highway behind them. Containment teams, emergency responders, government officials who had clearly been waiting for confirmation that the world hadn't ended. Regulated Order regrouped nearby. Helena was speaking quietly with Caelum while Viktor rested his weapon across his shoulder, silent as ever.
Elias stood slightly apart from everyone. Watching. Thinking.
Then the sky flickered. Lucien noticed first. "...Again?"
White light spread slowly across the sky like a second dawn. Across the world, people looked up. And the System returned. The message appeared across the heavens in enormous letters that seemed to exist everywhere at once.
[Gate Cleared - Rank S]
The words lingered. Then another line appeared beneath it.
[Global Event: First Gate Wave Complete]
A quiet murmur spread along the coastline. Kaida frowned slightly. "...Global?"
Elias answered before anyone else could. "Yes."
Lucien glanced at him. "You're saying this happened everywhere?"
Elias nodded once. "Every region."
As if confirming his words, the System continued. The text shifted.
[Regional Assessment Initiated]
[Korean Gate Event - Evaluation in Progress]
The soldiers watching from the road exchanged confused looks. The analysts staring at their monitors suddenly began shouting into radios. Then the next message appeared.
[Korean Participants will now be evaluated.]
Names began appearing across the sky: Lucien Ardent, Nox Caelis, Garrick Stonevale, Seris Elowen, Kaida Myrr, Orion Vale, Mira Solenne. Then—Elias Verdan, Helena Vireaux, Caelum Richter, Viktor Draeg.
The System wasn't simply acknowledging individuals; it was identifying them by region.
__
Across the city, far from the ruined coastline, Kairos Arvane sat alone in Aurora Covenant's strategy room. The broadcast covered the wall-sized display. He watched the names appear one by one, but his never did.
Kairos didn't look surprised. "...Right." He hadn't entered the gate. He hadn't fought. The System had no reason to recognize him. He leaned back slightly in his chair, then looked back at the screen. "...Next time."
__
Outside, the System continued.
[Contribution Assessment Complete]
[Korean Gate Rewards - Distribution Initiated]
Lucien felt the change first. A faint warmth spread across his shoulders. A new line appeared above him: Lucien Ardent - Halo Fragment of Dominion. A thin ring of golden light briefly formed behind him before fading into the air.
Mira blinked. "...Okay that was cool."
Kaida's announcement came next: Kaida Myrr - Veil of Primordial Night. A ripple of shadow gathered around her shoulders like a cloak before settling into nothingness. "...That," Kaida said thoughtfully, "might be useful."
The rewards continued appearing:
Seris Elowen - Tear of Restoration
Garrick Stonevale - Titan Anchor
Orion Vale - Moonstring
Mira Solenne - Gatekeeper's Sigil
Mira stared at the glowing symbol floating above her hand. "...I'm ninety percent sure this is going to get me arrested somewhere."
Then the sky paused. The next name appeared.
Nox Caelis
The text flickered. Lucien frowned. For a moment the letters distorted slightly. Then the System continued.
[Authority Classification: Unregistered]
Even the analysts watching the global broadcast fell silent. The message finished forming.
Reward Assigned: Fragment of Unwritten Fate
A small silver shard appeared in Nox's hand. Cold. Weightless. Strange. For a brief instant the sky glitched. Then the message stabilized.
Elias noticed. His silver eyes narrowed slightly.
Lucien noticed something else. Nox wasn't looking at the sky anymore. He was staring at the shard in his palm.
The System shifted again. New words formed across the sky.
[Gate Classifications Identified]
Seven names appeared beneath it:
[Breach Gates]
[Domain Gates]
[Trial Gates]
[Sovereign Gates]
[Relic Gates]
[Corruption Gates]
The final one flickered faintly: [Abyss Gates]. No explanation followed.
Then came the next announcement—the one that made the entire world stop breathing.
[Global Authority Index Identified]
Ten names appeared across the sky. Not ranked. Not ordered. Each with a regional designation:
[Lucien Ardent - Korea]
[Elias Verdan - Korea]
[Kaida Myrr - Korea]
[Marcus Hale - United States]
[Amara Devi - India]
[Li Xuan - China]
[Ren Takahashi - Japan]
[Isabella Duarte - Brazil]
[Freya Lindholm - Sweden]
[Azrael Kane - United Kingdom]
Kaida stared upward. "...Three Koreans."
Lucien exhaled slowly. Around the world, governments came to the same realization at the same time. Three of the strongest awakeners on Earth were currently located in Korea.
The System spoke one final time.
[Next Gate Wave Incoming]
Lucien's expression hardened. Another line appeared beneath it.
[No appearance schedule will be provided.]
The sky dimmed. The light faded. The System vanished. And humanity understood the truth: the gates would return. Anytime. Anywhere. Without warning.
Lucien walked over to Nox. "You alright?"
Nox closed his hand around the silver shard. "...Yes."
But as he looked briefly back toward the sky, he couldn't shake the feeling that the System had hesitated. As if—for just a moment—it hadn't known what to do with him.
