Chapter 39 - Chapter 39 – Moonrise Deadline

The capital felt different after the storm.

Sharper.

Like something invisible had shifted beneath the palace walls.

And somewhere inside that shift—

time was running out.

Moonrise

One day.

That was all the network had given him.

By moonrise—

Shen Lian had to make a choice.

Obey.

Or betray everything he had ever survived for.

The Temple Feels Colder

Morning light filtered weakly through the ruined temple roof.

Neither of them had slept.

Li Xuan stood near the entrance, watching the fog move through the mountains below.

Shen Lian remained silent behind him.

Too silent.

Li Xuan Already Knows

"They told you to kill me."

Not a question.

Shen Lian's fingers tightened slightly around his fan.

"…Yes."

The honesty hurts more than lying would have.

But Li Xuan doesn't react the way he expects.

No anger.

No fear.

Only stillness.

The Most Dangerous Thing He Could Say

"And will you?"

Shen Lian closes his eyes briefly.

Because that question has been destroying him since the moment the order was given.

"No."

Immediate.

Certain.

Real.

Li Xuan turns toward him slowly.

And for the first time since they met—

Shen Lian looks completely exposed.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The Truth Finally Spoken Clearly

"If I could've done it," Shen Lian says quietly,

"this would have ended a long time ago."

Silence fills the temple.

Heavy.

Intimate.

Painful.

Because they both know that's true.

Li Xuan Crosses Another Line

He walks toward him slowly.

No hesitation left anymore.

"No," Li Xuan murmurs.

"It ended the moment you came back."

That lands deeply.

Too deeply.

Back at the Palace

Advisor Chen enters the Crown Prince's chamber carrying several scrolls.

Calm.

Collected.

Dangerous.

"I believe the Fourth Prince is protecting someone."

The Crown Prince's gaze sharpens instantly.

"Who?"

Chen places a small object onto the table.

A silver bell.

The room goes still.

The Investigation Evolves Again

"This figure has appeared near multiple incidents connected to the Fourth Prince," Chen says evenly.

"And now?"

Chen's expression darkens slightly.

"Now I believe the connection is personal."

That changes everything.

Because political conspiracies can be managed.

Emotional weakness cannot.

Back at the Temple

The atmosphere between Li Xuan and Shen Lian grows heavier by the second.

Too many truths have surfaced.

Too many walls already broken.

"You should leave before moonrise," Shen Lian says quietly.

Li Xuan almost smiles.

"You're still trying to protect me."

"I'm trying to save you."

"No," Li Xuan says softly.

"You're trying to survive losing me before it happens."

That silence after—

almost unbearable.

Because once again—

he's right.

Shen Lian Finally Breaks

"You think this is easy for me?"

The words come sharper than intended.

Emotion finally bleeding through the control.

"I was trained to bury weakness before it could destroy me."

His breathing becomes uneven.

"And now every time I look at you—"

He stops himself.

Too late.

Li Xuan steps closer immediately.

"Finish the sentence."

Shen Lian looks away.

That alone says enough.

The Distance Fails Completely

Li Xuan reaches for him slowly.

This time—

Shen Lian doesn't stop him.

Fingers brush lightly beneath the edge of the veil.

Careful.

Intimate.

Dangerously soft compared to everything around them.

"You don't have to survive alone anymore," Li Xuan says quietly.

That line nearly destroys him.

Because Shen Lian realizes something terrifying:

A part of him wants to believe it.

The Kiss That Feels Like Surrender

Shen Lian pulls Li Xuan toward him suddenly.

Desperate this time.

Not restrained.

Not careful.

Like he's running out of time.

The kiss crashes between them hard and uneven, filled with fear and longing and everything neither of them knows how to say aloud.

Li Xuan grips his waist immediately, pulling him closer against the temple wall.

Breathing breaks apart.

Hands tighten.

The veil shifts slightly beneath trembling fingers.

And for a moment—

Shen Lian kisses him like someone trying to memorize what he's about to lose.

The Moment Turns Dangerous Again

Li Xuan's forehead rests briefly against his after they pull apart.

"Come with me."

Shen Lian freezes.

Because that possibility—

freedom—

has never felt real before.

"You don't know what you're asking."

"Yes I do."

"No."

His voice lowers.

"If I leave the network… they won't stop hunting us."

Li Xuan's answer comes instantly.

"Then we stop running."

Outside the Temple…

Hidden beneath the trees—

someone watches.

Motionless.

One of the network assassins.

And when they see Shen Lian in Li Xuan's arms—

their expression darkens.

Because now there is proof.
