Chapter 14 - 14:Choose

Jayden didn't sleep.

The phone call replayed in his head over and over again.

Stay away from my son.

The voice had been calm. Controlled. Powerful.

The kind of voice that didn't make empty threats.

The suit still lay across his small kitchen table. Dark navy. Perfect stitching. The fabric alone probably cost more than three months of his rent.

Beside it Roman's letter.

Jayden picked it up again.

He unfolded it slowly.

Roman's handwriting was sharp. Clean. Direct.

Jayden,

I should not have lost control.

That will not happen again.

You were wrong in your words.

I was wrong in my reaction.

You are here because of merit.

Do not let anyone convince you otherwise.

Wear the suit tomorrow.

We have a board meeting.

R.A.

Jayden stared at the last line.

That was it?

No emotional confession.

No explanation.

Just control disguised as apology.

His jaw tightened.

"You are here because of merit."

Easy to write.

Harder to prove.

His phone buzzed again.

This time it wasn't unknown.

It was an official university email.

Subject line:

Disciplinary Review Notice

Jayden's stomach dropped.

He opened it immediately.

The message was short.

A formal complaint had been filed by Ethan Keller's family.

The university would conduct an emergency review.

His scholarship status would be "temporarily assessed" pending investigation.

Temporarily assessed.

Which meant

At risk.

Jayden's hand slowly lowered.

So this was how it worked.

Money moved faster than truth.

---

The next morning, the university atmosphere felt different.

Students whispered more openly.

Ethan walked across campus with a faint bruise on his jaw — but confidence fully restored.

His father's influence had already started working.

Jayden walked past him without slowing.

Ethan smirked.

"You should've kept your hands to yourself."

Jayden stopped.

Turned.

"What did you do?"

Ethan shrugged casually.

"I didn't do anything. My father just believes in consequences."

Jayden's fists clenched.

"You filed a complaint."

"I didn't have to."

Ethan leaned slightly closer.

"You think professors can protect you?"

Jayden didn't answer.

Because he wasn't sure anymore.

---

Later that afternoon, Roman was called into the Dean's office.

The atmosphere inside was tense.

Dean Whitmore adjusted his glasses.

"This situation is delicate."

Roman remained standing.

"I am aware."

"Mr. Keller's father is one of our largest donors."

Roman's jaw hardened almost invisibly.

"And?"

"And he expects action."

Roman's voice stayed steady.

"An insult occurred. A fight followed. Both parties are responsible."

The Dean sighed.

"The Keller family is pushing for suspension."

Roman's eyes sharpened.

"That would be unjust."

The Dean leaned back.

"Justice and funding do not always align, Professor Ashford."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Roman understood the message.

Choose carefully.

---

That evening, Jayden wore the suit.

It fit perfectly.

Of course it did.

Roman paid attention to details.

He arrived at the company fifteen minutes early.

Elena's eyes widened slightly when she saw him.

She masked it quickly.

"Director Ashford is waiting."

Jayden walked into the office without knocking this time.

Roman looked up.

Their eyes locked.

Jayden spoke first.

"My scholarship is under review."

Roman's expression shifted slightly.

"I know."

Jayden laughed once.

"Of course you do."

Roman stepped closer.

"I spoke to the Dean."

"And?"

Roman hesitated.

"The situation is complicated."

Jayden's anger returned instantly.

"Complicated?"

Roman's voice lowered.

"You should not have fought him."

Jayden stepped forward.

"And he should not have insulted me."

Roman's gaze hardened.

"This is not about emotion. It is about consequence."

Jayden's eyes flashed.

"No. This is about power."

Silence fell between them.

Jayden continued.

"His father pressures the university. My future shakes. And you call it complicated."

Roman's voice was calm but firm.

"What do you expect me to do?"

Jayden stared at him.

Then said it clearly.

"Choose."

Roman's expression changed.

"Explain."

Jayden's voice did not tremble.

"You own this company. You're respected at that university. Your voice matters."

Roman didn't respond.

Jayden stepped closer.

"If you believe I'm here because of merit, prove it."

Roman's jaw tightened.

"You are asking me to risk my position."

"Yes."

The word came without hesitation.

"Why?" Roman demanded.

Jayden's voice lowered.

"Because if I fall now, I lose everything."

Silence stretched thin.

Roman studied him carefully.

"You think this is simple."

"I think you don't want to lose your comfort."

Roman's temper flickered.

"Careful."

Jayden didn't back down.

"You slapped me for accusing you of protecting the rich."

Roman's breath stilled.

Jayden continued.

"Now prove me wrong."

The room felt smaller.

Roman's entire career stood on one side.

Jayden's fragile future on the other.

"You want me to openly oppose the Keller family," Roman said slowly.

"Yes."

"And if I don't?"

Jayden's expression shifted slightly.

Then hardened.

"Then I know exactly where I stand."

Roman stared at him.

"You would walk away?"

Jayden's reply was colder than expected.

"I would survive."

That hurt more than the accusation.

Roman looked away first.

For the first time.

---

Later that night, Roman sat alone in his mansion.

The board meeting had gone smoothly.

But his mind hadn't been there.

Choose.

Jayden's voice echoed again.

Across town, Ethan's father sat in a private dining room with the Dean.

Money moved across tables without being seen.

Influence whispered between glasses of wine.

And somewhere in the middle

Jayden's scholarship hung by a thread.

Roman picked up his phone.

Dialed a number.

"Adrian."

"Yes."

"Schedule a meeting with the Dean tomorrow morning."

A pause.

"This about the Keller situation?"

"Yes."

"And if it escalates?"

Roman's voice lowered.

"Then it escalates."

He ended the call.

Across the city, Jayden stared at the ceiling in his apartment.

His phone buzzed again.

Another email.

University disciplinary board.

Meeting scheduled.

Final decision in forty-eight hours.

Jayden closed his eyes slowly.

Forty-eight hours.

To see whether power truly meant protection.

Or betrayal.
