Chapter 64: Digging into the past
The next morning Yui and Cid were in his hospital room looking at their phones. They were going over any public records they could access on the fight and anything publicly available about Cid, which wasn't much. They had been at it for a few hours and made zero progress so far.
"This isn't working, we at least need somewhere to start." Yui looked annoyed.
"I guess I will have to ask Nezu for my family records," he said. "And the police reports from that night. All Might read a version of a report with my family having four members, it has to exist somewhere."
Yui nodded. "Yea, I know you wanted to keep him out of this until you were more sure. But we're out of options."
Cid reached for the phone on the side table and pressed the call button on Nezu's contact profile.
Nezu picked up on the third ring. His bright and cheerful voice came through with a slight tilt to it. That meant he was already interested in why Cid was calling him.
"Mr. Kageno. I wasn't expecting you so soon. How are you feeling?"
"Fine enough, far better than when I first woke up." Cid didn't bother dressing it up. "But I need a favor. I need files on my family record and the police reports from the night my parents died. Whatever you can get without making a scene."
There was a short pause.
"That's a very specific request," Nezu said. Curious now. Not surprised, exactly. "May I ask why?"
"There are just a few things that aren't lining up on something for now." Cid said. "If I need you, I'll loop you in. Right now I just need those files please."
There was another pause that was longer than before.
"Very well," Nezu said. "I won't email them, if you need it kept discreet I'll have Aizawa bring physical copies to you."
"That's fine, thank you, sir."
"Do try to rest until then, Mr. Kageno."
"I will when I can." Cid hung up after that.
Yui was watching him with a look he didn't like. Sheepish. Like she'd forgotten to tell him something.
"What?"
"You should probably be ready for Aizawa-sensei," she said. "He's pretty upset with you right now."
"Why?" Cid asked confused
Yui glanced at the door, then back at him.
"It's probably best if he tells you that when he gets here." She hesitated. "He looked pretty mad at you when we talked in the hallway a few days ago."
Cid stared at her blankly, the look on his face screamed are you kidding me?.
A couple hours later there was a knock at the door. The door opened before Cid could tell the person to enter. Aizawa stepped in with a folder in one hand and his capture scarf loose around his shoulders, looking more tired than normal.
"Sensei." Cid's greeting was more of an automatic response. His eyes were too focused on the folder in Aizawa's hands.
Aizawa noticed his attention immediately and shifted the folder under his arm.
"Nezu asked me to bring this to you." He lifted the folder a fraction, then didn't offer it. "But, you're not getting it until you listen to what I have to say. Is that clear."
Cid's jaw tightened. Being talked to like that sat wrong with him, but he didn't voice his complaint. He just responded stiffly.
"Yes, sir."
Aizawa stopped at the foot of the bed.
"What you did in that fight was unacceptable. You sent me away like I was one of your classmates or a civilian." His voice stayed flat. "You don't get to make that choice. I am your teacher. It is my job to protect you. It doesn't matter that you've been out of class for months. It doesn't matter that Nezu's been giving you special work because of your Quirk, or your potential."
He looked at Cid's empty sleeve, then at the bandages, and didn't look away fast enough.
"I don't care what you thought was best for me. I could have helped you. You didn't let me. Look where that left you."
'I should have been there, I could have prevented this.' He thought.
Cid opened his mouth to argue. Then he shut it. Aizawa had a right to be angry. He was also right, it was a stupid decision that could have changed the whole fight.
"…Yes, sir. You're right." Cid's voice dropped. "I shouldn't have done that. It was arrogant. It wasn't my decision. I shouldn't have sent you away like that."
Aizawa watched him for a few seconds. Then he sighed.
"Good enough."
He set the folder down on the table harder than he needed to.
"Now for your Punishment. You're banned from training until you're medically cleared and I give the okay. When classes restart, you don't get to skip anymore. And you will be going to mandatory sessions with Hound Dog, for counseling. Don't make me have this conversation with you again. Am I clear."
"Yes, sir." Cid looked subdued.
"Good, and for what it's worth I'm glad you're alive Kageno, keep it that way." He said before turning and walking out the door.
Yui watched the door close, then looked at Cid. She didn't argue with anything Aizawa had said. He was right. Cid had been in the wrong and he knew it.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah." He let out a short breath. "I'm good. Just realizing how badly I messed up."
Yui got up, sat on the edge of the bed, and hugged him carefully around the uninjured side. She stayed there a second, then changed the subject.
"I guess we should look at that file then. See if we can find anything. What do you say?"
Cid nodded before grabbing the folder and flipping it open.
They spent the next few hours going through every page more than once. Family record. Rescue report. Police write-up. Witness notes that had already been cleaned into something official.
There were only ever three people mentioned. A mother, father, a young boy.
No Claire Kageno. No fourth child. Nothing that proved what they suspected was true.
Cid shut the folder harder than he meant to. Yui sat back, just as frustrated.
"We should bring Nezu in," Cid said. "He'd be able to help a lot more than we can from a hospital bed."
Yui nodded. "And what about Aizawa sensei? He is known mainly for his underground work; he would have connections."
Cid hesitated, then nodded again. "Yeah. Him too, Nezu would probably bring him in on this anyway."
Yui opened her mouth, stopped, then pushed through it.
"…What if you asked Sir Nighteye? I'm sure he would help as well-"
Cid's face went grim immediately and cut her off.
"No. I don't want to talk to him right now."
Yui looked at him and didn't back off, but she did soften her tone a bit.
"I get that Cid. But are your issues with him more important than this?" she said rubbing his arm "Is your anger at him more important than your family?"
Cid froze then let out a heavy sigh.
"…No," he said after a second. "No. They're not."
Yui smiled and kissed him, muttering against his mouth.
"That's the Cid I know."
She pulled back just enough to look at him.
"He'll be a big help digging into this. Do you want to call him, or are you going through Mirio?"
"No." Cid shook his head once. "If I'm asking for his help, I'll call him myself."
