Chapter 22 - The First Rule of Power

No one spoke for several seconds.

The wind had stilled again.

But the tension hadn't.

---

Aria's eyes didn't leave him.

"You're saying I become… that?"

---

The man didn't answer immediately.

He studied her.

Not judging.

Not impressed.

Just… confirming.

---

"You become something," he said finally.

"What that is… depends on what you choose to control."

---

Selene exhaled quietly.

"I hate answers like that."

---

Kael stepped forward again.

"You're not taking her anywhere."

---

The man glanced at him.

"That's not your decision."

---

"It is."

---

The air tightened slightly.

Not from Aria.

From Kael.

His presence had shifted.

Not power—

But authority.

---

Selene noticed.

"…This is getting interesting."

---

Aria raised a hand slightly.

"Stop."

---

Both of them did.

---

Her gaze returned to the man.

"If you know what's happening to me…"

A pause.

"Then prove it."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

"Fine."

---

The man stepped forward.

Slow.

Unhurried.

And somehow—

More dangerous because of it.

---

"First rule," he said.

"Your power isn't the problem."

---

Aria frowned.

"Then what is?"

---

"You are."

---

Selene almost laughed.

"…That's harsh."

---

But Aria didn't react.

Because she understood what he meant.

---

"You're trying to control two forces separately," he continued.

"Storm."

"Shadow."

A pause.

"They're not separate."

---

Kael frowned.

"That contradicts everything you just said."

---

The man didn't look at him.

"They conflict because she believes they do."

---

Aria's eyes narrowed.

"That's not belief. I can feel it."

---

"Yes."

A step closer.

"But feeling isn't understanding."

---

The wind shifted again.

Slight.

Unstable.

---

"Try something," he said.

---

Aria didn't move.

"What?"

---

"Stop separating them."

---

Selene crossed her arms.

"That sounds extremely risky."

---

"It is."

---

Kael stepped forward.

"No."

---

Aria didn't look at him.

"I need to understand this."

---

"You could lose control."

---

"I already am."

---

That ended the argument.

---

The man nodded slightly.

"Good."

---

He gestured toward the open terrace.

"Focus."

---

Aria stepped forward slowly.

The night air touched her skin again.

Cool.

Unstable.

---

"Close your eyes."

---

She hesitated.

Then did.

---

"Feel it."

---

She did.

The wind.

The pressure.

The vast sky above.

---

And beneath it—

The shadows.

Cold.

Deep.

Waiting.

---

Two forces.

Pulling.

Opposing.

---

Her breathing slowed.

---

"They're fighting," she said quietly.

---

"Yes."

---

"How do I stop it?"

---

"You don't."

---

Her eyes snapped open.

"What?"

---

"You don't stop it," he repeated.

"You redirect it."

---

The shadows moved slightly.

Reacting.

---

Selene whispered,

"…This is either genius or a disaster."

---

"Again," the man said.

"Close your eyes."

---

Aria did.

---

"Now—don't choose."

---

That felt wrong.

Completely wrong.

---

Every instinct told her to control.

To separate.

To stabilize.

---

"Don't choose," he repeated.

---

The wind picked up slightly.

The shadows deepened.

---

Both responding.

At once.

---

Her breathing became uneven.

---

"It's too much—"

---

"Good."

---

Kael stepped forward.

"Stop this."

---

"Wait," Selene said quietly.

---

Because she saw it.

---

Something was changing.

---

Aria's fingers curled slightly.

The air around her shifted—

But not violently.

Not like before.

---

This time—

It moved smoothly.

---

The wind didn't clash with the shadows.

---

They… blended.

---

Selene's eyes widened.

"…No way."

---

A faint dark current moved through the air itself.

Invisible.

But present.

---

Aria felt it.

---

Not two forces.

Not conflict.

---

One.

---

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"I can feel both…"

---

"Yes."

---

"They're not fighting anymore."

---

The man nodded once.

---

"Because you stopped forcing them to."

---

Kael stared.

"…That shouldn't be possible."

---

But it was happening.

---

Aria slowly raised her hand.

---

The air moved.

---

But not like before.

---

It didn't surge.

Didn't explode.

---

It bent.

---

Controlled.

Precise.

---

And beneath it—

A faint shadow traced the movement.

---

Not separate.

Connected.

---

Selene let out a breath.

"…That's new."

---

Aria opened her eyes.

---

They flickered.

Silver—

Then something darker beneath.

---

Not unstable.

Not fully controlled either.

---

But different.

---

Stronger.

---

The man stepped back slightly.

"Good."

---

Kael looked between them.

"What just happened?"

---

Selene answered quietly.

"She just stopped fighting herself."

---

Aria looked at her hand.

Then at her shadow.

---

Still moving slightly.

But now—

In sync.

---

For the first time—

The power didn't feel like it was pulling her apart.

---

It felt like something she could actually use.

---

But only for a moment.

---

The connection flickered.

---

The wind snapped sharply.

The shadows recoiled.

---

Aria staggered slightly.

---

The man caught it immediately.

"Don't rush it."

---

She steadied herself.

Breathing heavier now.

---

"That's all I get?"

---

"For now."

---

Selene smiled faintly.

"Progress is still progress."

---

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…At least you didn't destroy the palace this time."

---

Aria almost smiled.

Almost.

---

But her gaze returned to the man.

---

"You said I become something."

---

A pause.

---

"What is it?"

---

He looked at her.

Not cold.

Not distant.

---

Certain.

---

"You become a balance the world isn't ready for."

---

Silence.

---

Selene shook her head slightly.

"That sounds like a future disaster."

---

The man didn't disagree.

---

"It usually is."

---

Aria didn't look away.

Because now—

For the first time—

She wasn't just reacting.

She was learning.

And if she truly learned to control both—

Then the empire wouldn't be facing a storm anymore…

They'd be facing something far worse.
