Chapter 63 - Chapter 63: The Shadow that Followed

The bunker doors closed behind them with a heavy, echoing thud, metal sealing metal, final and absolute. The sound should have brought relief, it didn't.

Mia stepped out of the car, her boots landing softly against the concrete floor. The air inside the bunker was cool, controlled, safe but her chest still felt tight because something had followed them and it hadn't felt random.

Luis shut the car door quietly, his movements calm but deliberate. His eyes scanned the garage once, instinctively checking every corner, every shadow, like he expected something to slip in behind them.

"They didn't push," Mia said, breaking the silence.

Luis nodded once. "That's what bothers me."

If it had been desperate survivors, they would've tried something, blocked the road, closed distance, taken risks.

But that car?

It kept its distance. Watched. Tested.

Mia exhaled slowly. "They were studying us."

Luis didn't disagree.

Inside the control room, Federick Ray stood in front of the surveillance monitors, arms crossed. The glow from the screens reflected off his sharp, focused eyes. Beside him, Olivia Ray remained composed, though the tension in her posture was clear.

"You're back," Olivia said, her voice carrying quiet relief.

Federick didn't waste time. "You were followed."

Luis stepped forward. "Yes."

Mia moved closer to the monitors. "Show us."

Federick tapped a key.

The footage played.

A narrow road cutting through the forest. Their vehicle passed through first.

Then, seconds later, another car. Dark-colored. Clean movement. Controlled speed.

Never too close, never too far.

Mia's eyes narrowed. "Play the next angle."

Another camera. Same vehicle still there, still watching.

Luis leaned in slightly. "Enhance."

"It won't get clearer," Federick replied. "But I tracked them across multiple cameras. Same pattern the whole time."

Mia folded her arms. "They knew what they were doing."

Federick nodded. "Not amateurs."

Silence settled briefly.

Luis spoke, voice low. "Not infected. Not scavengers."

Mia added, "And not desperate."

That was the most dangerous part.

People who weren't desperate had time to think, to plan and to wait.

Luis straightened. "The two people outside the bunker before, are they connected?"

Federick shook his head. "No."

He switched to another camera log.

"Those two were just passing through. They stayed near the perimeter for a few days, but they never attempted entry. No tools. No weapons beyond basic protection."

Olivia added gently, "They approached the outer boundary once. Looked like they wanted to ask for help."

Mia's expression softened slightly.

"Then why didn't they?" she asked.

"They left before trying again," Federick said. "Probably realized this place wasn't something they could approach safely."

Luis nodded. "So they weren't a threat."

"No," Federick confirmed. "Just people trying to survive."

Mia looked back at the main screen, the car that followed them. "This is different."

And everyone in the room knew it.

Luis leaned back slightly, thinking. "Organized movement. Consistent tracking. Distance control…"

Mia finished quietly, "A group."

Federick's gaze hardened. "Most likely."

Olivia looked between them. "You think they've been watching longer?"

Mia didn't answer immediately.

But the thought had already formed.

"They didn't find us by accident," she said.

Luis glanced at her. "You're thinking they've been observing the area."

"Yes."

Her voice was steady.

"And they finally made contact today."

Not direct contact but enough. Enough to say, we see you.

Miles away, hidden deep along the forest road where the trees thickened into shadows, several vehicles remained parked in silence.

Engines off.

Lights dead.

Only the faint sound of wind moving through branches filled the air.

A man stood beside the lead vehicle, posture relaxed, as if this world still followed rules. It didn't but he acted like it did.

Felix Hill.

He adjusted his cuff slightly, gaze fixed on the direction where Luis and Mia had disappeared.

"So," he murmured, almost to himself, "that was you."

Behind him, a small group stood, armed, alert, but disciplined. Not chaotic survivors. Controlled and structured.

A woman stepped forward, her tone direct. "We lost them when they diverted."

Felix gave a small nod. "Expected."

A man beside her crossed his arms. "We can search the area. Sweep for hidden access points."

Felix shook his head immediately. "No."

The word was calm but final.

"They anticipated being followed," he continued. "Which means they were protecting something."

The woman narrowed her eyes slightly. "A base?"

Felix's lips curved faintly. "Most likely."

He stepped forward, glancing down at faint tire marks on the road. Careful and calculated.

Even their escape had been controlled. Interesting.

"They didn't panic," he added. "They adapted."

The man spoke again. "Then we should move fast before they relocate."

Felix chuckled softly. "People like that don't relocate under pressure."

He looked up again, eyes sharp. "They prepare."

Silence followed.

Respect.

Because Felix wasn't guessing.

He was analyzing.

"And the two near that area last week?" the woman asked. "The ones we observed?"

Felix waved it off. "Irrelevant."

"They were harmless. Curious, maybe hoping for help."

He straightened. "If they mattered, they'd still be there."

His gaze darkened slightly as he looked toward the unseen bunker.

"But the ones we followed today…"

A pause.

"…they matter."

Back inside the bunker, Mia stood near the hallway entrance, arms crossed, her mind already moving ahead.

This wasn't like before.

Not like the scattered threats they'd faced.

This felt… different.

Luis stepped beside her. "They'll come back."

Mia nodded slightly. "Yes."

Not immediately, not recklessly.

"But they will."

Luis's expression hardened. "Then we prepare before they do."

Mia looked ahead, her gaze steady.

"Not just defenses," she said. "Information."

Luis glanced at her. "You want to know who they are."

"Yes."

Because that would decide everything.

How dangerous they were.

How patient and ruthless.

Luis exhaled quietly. "Then we start watching back."

Mia nodded once.

Outside, beyond reinforced walls and hidden systems, someone had already set their eyes on them.

And unlike the world before,

There were no laws left to slow people like that down.

In the darkness of the forest, Felix Hill stood still, staring into the distance where the road disappeared. He didn't need to rush. Didn't need to chase because sooner or later, people revealed what they were protecting.

And when they did,

That's when he would move.
