Chapter 65 - Chapter 65: Quiet Flames

The forest beyond the bunker remained still, but not empty.

Hidden among the dense trees and uneven terrain, a group of men moved with quiet precision. They did not wander aimlessly like desperate survivors. They observed. They waited.

At the center of it all stood Felix Hill.

He wasn't dressed like the world had ended. His clothes were simple but clean, his posture composed, his presence commanding without effort. Even now, with civilization crumbling and the infected roaming freely, Felix carried himself like a man who had never truly lost control.

He stood on a slight rise, overlooking the direction where Luis and Mia's vehicle had disappeared days ago.

"Same route," one of his men said quietly behind him. "They always return to the same general area… but vanish before we can confirm the entry point."

Felix didn't respond immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the distant treeline.

"They're careful," he said at last.

Another man stepped forward. "Do you think it's a hidden structure?"

Felix tilted his head slightly.

"It has to be. No one disappears like that without preparation."

His gaze sharpened.

"And no one survives this long without organization."

He turned, walking slowly back toward their temporary camp.

"Still no movement?" he asked.

"None," the first man replied. "No smoke. No lights. No sound. If they're there… they're buried deep."

Felix gave a faint smile.

"Good."

The man frowned slightly. "Good?"

Felix stopped walking and looked back at him.

"People who hide like that aren't weak," he said calmly. "They're disciplined. Strategic."

A pause.

"And useful."

The men exchanged glances.

Felix continued walking.

"We don't attack," he said. "Not yet."

"What's the plan then?" another asked.

Felix's voice remained steady.

"We learn."

He glanced toward the trees again.

"Every movement. Every pattern. Every mistake."

His eyes darkened slightly.

"And when we understand them… we decide what they're worth."

None of them questioned him further.

Because Felix Hill didn't move without purpose.

And he never rushed something he intended to control.

---

Deep inside the bunker, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Safe.

Quiet.

But never careless.

Mia sat alone in the control room, the glow of multiple screens reflecting softly in her eyes. The surveillance system hummed quietly around her, each monitor displaying a different angle, forest, perimeter, hidden paths.

And one particular screen.

Alps Builders.

Her building.

Her father's legacy.

Her past.

She leaned forward slightly, fingers moving across the controls as she accessed the internal CCTV recordings she had remotely preserved.

The footage began to play.

At first, it was nothing unusual, Kevin and Chelsea moving through the floors, carrying supplies, arguing over small things. The same arrogance. The same selfishness.

Then,

The breach.

Mia's eyes narrowed slightly as she watched the moment the doors were unlocked remotely… the moment chaos was allowed inside.

A bitten man stumbling through the entrance.

Blood.

Panic.

Chelsea screaming.

Kevin shouting.

Then the infected.

More than one.

Fast.

Violent.

Unforgiving.

Mia didn't blink as she watched Kevin struggle to barricade doors, his confidence cracking under pressure. Chelsea, once composed and manipulative, reduced to fear, scrambling, crying, clinging to him.

For a moment, just a moment, Mia felt something stir inside her.

Not guilt.

Not sympathy.

Satisfaction.

"They're scared," she murmured softly.

She watched as Kevin barely escaped being grabbed, as Chelsea nearly stumbled into the infected's reach.

Her lips curved slightly.

"That's how it feels," she whispered.

Her voice was calm.

Cold.

"They should know."

She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms as the footage continued.

They didn't die.

Not yet.

But they suffered.

And for Mia

That was enough.

For now.

---

The door to the control room opened quietly.

Luis stepped inside.

He paused when he saw her, noticing the screen immediately.

"…Alps Builders?" he asked gently.

Mia didn't turn right away.

"Mm."

Luis walked closer, his gaze shifting to the footage.

He watched for a moment.

Then his expression hardened slightly.

"They almost died."

Mia finally looked at him.

"Yes."

There was no hesitation in her voice.

Luis studied her face.

"You did this," he said quietly.

It wasn't an accusation.

It was understanding.

Mia held his gaze.

"I let it happen."

A brief silence settled between them.

Luis didn't look away.

"…Do you regret it?" he asked.

Mia's expression didn't change.

"No."

Another pause.

Then she added, softer this time,

"They left me to die."

Luis's chest tightened slightly.

He stepped closer.

"I know."

Mia looked back at the screen, her voice calm again.

"I'm not killing them. I'm not chasing them."

Her fingers tapped lightly against the console.

"But I won't save them either."

Luis nodded slowly.

"That's fair."

Mia turned to him fully now.

"And if they die…"

She didn't finish the sentence.

She didn't need to.

Luis understood.

"I won't stop you," he said quietly.

Their eyes met.

And something shifted.

The tension in the room softened, not gone, but different.

Closer.

Luis leaned lightly against the console beside her.

"You've changed," he said.

Mia raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Is that a bad thing?"

Luis shook his head.

"No."

A small smile tugged at his lips.

"It's the reason we're still alive."

Mia looked at him for a moment, then looked away, almost shy for the first time in a long while.

Silence settled again but it wasn't uncomfortable.

Luis broke it.

"…You don't have to carry everything alone."

Mia let out a quiet breath.

"I'm not alone."

Luis's voice softened.

"No. You're not."

Another pause.

Then

"Mia…"

She looked at him.

Luis hesitated.

For once, the calm, composed man seemed unsure.

"There's something I.."

He stopped himself.

Mia tilted her head slightly.

"What?"

Luis exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair.

"…Nothing."

Mia frowned slightly.

"You don't start a sentence like that and just stop."

Luis laughed softly.

"I know."

"Then say it."

He looked at her again.

Really looked.

The girl who had come back from death.

Who carried the future.

Who stood beside him through everything.

His voice lowered.

"I was going to say… that whatever happens next…"

He paused again.

Mia waited.

"I'll stay with you," he finished.

The words weren't everything he meant.

But they were close.

Mia's expression softened slightly.

"You already are."

Luis smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

Another quiet moment passed.

Then Mia nudged him lightly.

"You're bad at this."

Luis blinked.

"At what?"

"Talking."

He chuckled.

"I noticed."

Mia smiled, just a little.

It wasn't the cold smile from earlier.

It was real.

Soft.

And it made Luis forget, for a second, that the world outside was falling apart.

---

Far above them, hidden beyond layers of earth and steel.

Felix Hill stood once more at the edge of the forest.

Watching.

Waiting.

Patient.

He didn't know who was inside the bunker.

He didn't know about Mia.

Or Luis.

But he knew one thing.

Someone down there was worth finding.

And when the time came,

He wouldn't ask twice.

His eyes narrowed slightly as the wind moved through the trees.

"Soon," he murmured.

And somewhere deep below,

Unaware of just how close the storm was getting.

Mia and Luis stood side by side.

Safe.

For now.

But not for long.
