Night settled over the forest like a living thing, heavy and watchful. The trees stood still, their shadows stretching long and deep beneath the faint glow of the moon. Outside the bunker, the world seemed quiet but it was not peaceful. It was the kind of silence that listened back.
Inside, the bunker remained awake.
Soft lights illuminated the control room as multiple screens displayed the surrounding terrain. The hum of generators filled the background, steady and reassuring. Yet no one truly relaxed anymore, not after everything they had learned.
Mia stood in front of the central monitor, her arms crossed, eyes focused. The faint glow of the screens reflected in her gaze as she scanned every angle, every shadow.
Luis leaned against the console beside her, watching her more than the screens.
"You've been staring at that same feed for ten minutes," he said quietly.
Mia didn't look away. "Because something feels wrong."
Luis straightened slightly. "You saw something?"
"Not exactly." She paused, narrowing her eyes. "That's what bothers me."
Luis exhaled slowly. "You think it's them."
Mia finally turned to him. "I know it's them."
There was no doubt in her voice.
Felix Hill's group had been too careful, too patient. People like that didn't just disappear.
They waited, watched and eventually they moved.
Luis pushed himself off the console and stepped closer to the monitors. "If they're out there, they'll make a move soon."
Mia nodded once. "And when they do… it won't be obvious."
A moment of silence passed between them.
Then,
A faint sound crackled through the bunker's external audio system.
Both of them froze.
Luis turned toward the speaker mounted near the wall. "Did you hear that?"
Mia was already moving. She tapped the console, isolating the audio feed connected to the outer microphones.
The static cleared slightly.
Then,
A voice.
Faint.
Broken.
"…hello…?"
Mia's fingers stilled over the controls.
Luis's expression sharpened. "Someone's out there."
The voice came again, slightly clearer this time.
"Please… if anyone can hear this…"
It was a woman's voice.
Weak.
Trembling.
"…we need help…"
The room seemed to grow colder.
Mia's eyes narrowed.
Luis looked at her. "That's a survivor."
"No," Mia said immediately.
Luis blinked. "What?"
"That's bait."
Her voice was calm—but firm.
Luis hesitated. "You're sure?"
Mia didn't answer right away. Instead, she adjusted the feed, amplifying the sound, filtering the background noise.
The voice continued, uneven and desperate.
"My brother… he's hurt… we've been walking for days…"
Luis listened carefully, his jaw tightening. "That sounds real."
Mia shook her head slowly.
"It sounds practiced."
Luis frowned. "What do you mean?"
Mia pointed at the audio levels. "Listen to the pattern."
The voice cracked at the right moments. The breathing sounded strained but controlled. The pauses were too consistent. Too measured.
"That's not panic," Mia said quietly. "That's performance."
Luis's expression darkened as realization began to settle in.
"They're testing us."
Mia nodded. "They want to see if we respond."
The voice outside grew louder, as if moving slightly closer.
"Please… we know someone is here… we saw tracks…"
Luis's grip tightened on the edge of the console.
"They're fishing."
"Yes," Mia replied. "And we're not biting."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The voice continued.
"…we don't have much time…"
Luis exhaled slowly. "If we ignore them, they'll know we're here anyway."
Mia glanced at him. "They already know."
"Then what's the point of pretending?" he asked.
"To control the situation," she said simply.
Luis studied her face, she wasn't being cold and she was being precise.
"There's more," Mia added.
Luis's eyes sharpened. "What?"
Mia switched camera feeds rapidly, scanning different angles around the bunker's hidden entrance.
"While we're listening to this…" she said slowly, "…they're doing something else."
Luis immediately understood.
"Diversion."
Mia nodded.
Her fingers moved quickly across the controls, pulling up motion detection logs.
There,
A flicker.
Southwest perimeter.
Luis leaned closer. "There."
A faint figure moved between the trees.
Low.
Careful.
Not heading toward the voice. Heading toward the terrain. Mapping. Searching.
"Scout," Luis muttered.
Mia's expression hardened. "And a good one."
The figure crouched, examining the ground. Then moved again closer to where the bunker entrance lay hidden beneath layers of camouflage.
Luis's hand instinctively went to his weapon.
"They're trying to find it."
Mia's voice remained steady. "They won't, not easily."
But even she couldn't deny the danger.
The scout was methodical.
Patient.
Exactly the kind of person Felix Hill would send.
Outside, the voice continued its desperate plea.
"Please… we don't want trouble…"
Luis shook his head slightly. "They really went all in."
"Because they think we're emotional," Mia replied.
Luis glanced at her.
"And are we?"
Mia met his gaze.
"For the right people," she said softly.
Then her eyes returned to the screen.
"But not for them."
The scout outside moved closer.
Too close.
Luis's pulse quickened. "If he steps another few meters."
"He won't," Mia interrupted.
Luis looked at her.
Mia's fingers hovered over a control panel.
"Watch."
She pressed a button.
Outside,
A sudden mechanical sound echoed faintly from a distance. A metallic clang, sharp, unexpected. The scout froze.
Luis blinked. "What did you do?"
"Triggered a false noise from the eastern ridge," Mia said calmly.
On the monitor, the scout turned his head toward the sound. Hesitation, calculation.
Then,
He shifted direction.
Away from the bunker.
Luis exhaled quietly. "You redirected him."
Mia nodded.
"They don't know exactly where we are yet," she said. "And I'm not giving them that advantage."
The voice outside faltered for a moment, as if waiting for a response.
Silence answered it.
Then—
"…please…"
Mia muted the audio.
The room fell quiet again.
Luis ran a hand through his hair. "That was close."
"Not close enough," Mia said.
Luis gave a faint, humorless smile. "You're terrifying when you say things like that."
Mia didn't respond, her focus still on the screens.
Outside, the scout had fully withdrawn, disappearing back into the trees. The voice, now ignored, faded slowly.
Eventually, silence. Real silence this time.
Luis leaned back slightly, exhaling.
"So that's how they play."
Mia nodded once.
"Careful. Patient. Strategic."
Luis crossed his arms. "Just like us."
Mia glanced at him.
"Not exactly."
Luis raised an eyebrow. "No?"
Mia's gaze softened slightly but only for a moment.
"They're trying to find us," she said.
"And we're making sure they never do."
Luis studied her for a second longer than necessary.
There was something about her, something unshakable. It grounded him. More than anything else in this world.
"You're incredible," he said quietly.
Mia blinked, caught off guard for just a second. Luis seemed to realize what he had said. He looked away slightly.
"I mean… your thinking. Your instincts."
Mia's lips curved faintly.
"I knew what you meant."
A brief silence settled between them. Not awkward. Just… heavy with something unspoken.
Luis cleared his throat slightly. "Still… this isn't over."
Mia shook her head.
"No," she agreed. "It's just the beginning."
Outside, hidden deep within the forest, unseen by any camera.
A man stood in the shadows, watching and listening. Felix Hill lowered the small receiver in his hand, his expression calm. Behind him, the woman who had spoken earlier sat against a tree, catching her breath.
"She didn't respond," she said quietly.
Felix's gaze remained fixed on the dark forest ahead.
"No," he replied.
"But she listened."
The scout stepped out from the trees, returning silently.
"Nothing confirmed," he reported. "But there's something there. Hidden."
Felix nodded slowly.
A faint smile touched his lips.
"Good."
The woman frowned slightly. "What now?"
Felix looked toward the unseen bunker.
"We wait," he said.
His voice was calm.
Certain.
"They're smart," he continued. "Which means they'll make a mistake eventually."
The scout crossed his arms. "And if they don't?"
Felix's smile widened just slightly.
"They will."
He turned away from the direction of the bunker, already walking back into the deeper shadows of the forest.
"Everyone does."
Back inside, Mia stared at the dark monitor.
Something in her chest felt tight. Not fear. Not exactly but something close.
"They're not going away," she said quietly.
Luis stepped beside her.
"I know."
Mia's eyes remained on the screen.
"Next time… they'll push harder."
Luis nodded.
"And we'll be ready."
Mia finally looked at him.
For a moment, everything else faded, the tension, the danger, the world outside.
"Together," she said.
Luis met her gaze.
"Always."
The bunker remained sealed, safe for now but outside. The game had begun and neither side intended to lose.
