Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: A Dangerous Dance

The applause slowly faded after Elena stepped down from the stage.

Whispers immediately spread across the ballroom again.

"That woman is bold…"

"She didn't seem intimidated at all."

"Romano chose well."

Elena heard some of the comments as she walked back toward Alessandro.

She pretended not to notice.

But she did.

Adrian leaned closer as she passed him.

"Well done."

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"That felt like an exam."

Adrian smirked slightly.

"You passed."

When she reached Alessandro, his expression was calm… but his eyes were colder than usual.

"You enjoyed that."

Elena crossed her arms.

"Victor invited us here to make a show."

She tilted her head.

"I simply participated."

Alessandro studied her quietly.

"You shouldn't underestimate him."

"I don't."

She looked across the ballroom where Victor still stood speaking with several guests.

"But I also refuse to act scared."

Alessandro didn't respond immediately.

Finally he said quietly:

"That's exactly why he finds you interesting."

Elena shrugged lightly.

"That sounds like his problem."

Before the conversation could continue, the orchestra started playing again.

This time the music was slower.

Elegant.

A waltz.

Several couples began moving toward the center of the ballroom floor.

Elena watched them.

"Do you dance?"

Alessandro raised an eyebrow.

"You're asking now?"

"Well…"

She gestured toward the dance floor.

"This seems like the kind of event where dancing happens."

Alessandro looked unimpressed.

"I'm aware."

She waited.

He didn't move.

Elena sighed.

"So that's a no."

Just as she turned slightly away—

A voice spoke behind her.

"May I have this dance?"

Elena froze.

She knew that voice.

Victor Hale stood behind her, his posture relaxed and confident.

Several nearby guests immediately stopped talking.

Even Adrian straightened slightly.

Victor's attention was entirely on Elena.

His hand extended politely.

The entire moment felt like a trap wrapped in charm.

Elena glanced at Alessandro.

His jaw tightened.

Victor noticed.

His smile grew slightly.

"Of course," he said smoothly, "if your husband objects…"

Elena looked between them.

The tension in the air was thick enough to cut.

This wasn't just a dance.

It was a challenge.

Victor knew it.

Alessandro knew it.

And now Elena knew it too.

She slowly placed her hand in Victor's.

"I'd love to."

The music continued softly as Victor guided her toward the dance floor.

Behind them, Adrian muttered quietly.

"Well… that escalated quickly."

Alessandro's gaze followed them.

Cold.

Controlled.

But dangerous.

Meanwhile, in the center of the ballroom, Victor placed one hand lightly at Elena's waist while holding her other hand in a proper dance position.

His movements were smooth and practiced.

"You're very brave," he said quietly.

Elena met his gaze calmly.

"Or very stupid."

Victor chuckled softly.

"Bravery and stupidity are often confused."

They began moving across the floor gracefully.

Victor was an excellent dancer.

Elena had to admit that.

"You seem comfortable here," he continued.

"I adapt quickly."

"I noticed."

They spun gently with the music.

Victor leaned slightly closer.

"Most people would avoid standing on that stage earlier."

Elena shrugged.

"I've never liked hiding."

Victor's eyes studied her carefully.

"Interesting."

"And you?"

"What about me?"

"Why invite us here tonight?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"You're direct."

"I prefer efficiency."

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead he guided her through another elegant turn.

Then he said softly:

"Because I wanted to see something."

"What?"

"You."

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"That's creepy."

Victor laughed quietly.

"Perhaps."

"But accurate."

They continued dancing.

Around them, the other couples seemed almost irrelevant.

Victor's attention never left her.

"You don't behave like someone new to this world," he observed.

Elena tilted her head.

"What world?"

"The world of power."

She smiled faintly.

"Maybe I'm just stubborn."

Victor's gaze darkened slightly.

"Or maybe you're much more dangerous than people realize."

Across the ballroom, Alessandro watched the dance.

Every movement.

Every second.

Adrian stood beside him.

"Relax."

Alessandro didn't respond.

Adrian continued quietly.

"Victor is provoking you."

"I know."

"Then don't react."

Alessandro's eyes remained fixed on the dance floor.

"I'm not reacting."

Adrian glanced at him.

"You look like you're about to start a war."

Alessandro's voice remained calm.

"Not tonight."

Back on the dance floor, Victor guided Elena into a slow spin before pulling her back smoothly.

"You dance well," he said.

"So do you."

"Thank you."

She studied him carefully.

"You know this annoys Alessandro."

Victor smiled.

"That's part of the charm."

Elena rolled her eyes slightly.

"You two are exhausting."

Victor chuckled.

"Rivalries tend to be."

The music began slowing toward the end of the song.

Victor looked down at her thoughtfully.

"One more question."

Elena sighed.

"Sure."

"Are you loyal to Alessandro Romano…"

He paused slightly.

"…or to yourself?"

Elena didn't hesitate.

"To myself."

Victor's smile widened slowly.

"Good answer."

The music ended.

Victor released her hand politely.

"Thank you for the dance, Mrs. Romano."

Elena nodded.

"Likewise."

As she walked back toward Alessandro, she felt Victor's gaze following her.

Carefully.

Thoughtfully.

When she reached Alessandro, he spoke quietly.

"You enjoyed that."

Elena shrugged.

"He's a good dancer."

Adrian coughed to hide a laugh.

Alessandro's gaze darkened slightly.

"Elena."

"Yes?"

"Don't forget who he is."

She looked at him calmly.

"I haven't."

Across the ballroom, Victor stood watching them again.

His assistant approached quietly.

"Well?"

Victor's smile was faint but clear.

"She's fascinating."

"And?"

Victor looked toward Alessandro.

Then back at Elena.

"This game just became much more interesting."
