Chapter 5 - Shadows Among Flames

Night fell over the Ember Fist Sect.

The blazing braziers cast long, dancing shadows across the stone halls. The air smelled of ash, sweat, and discipline. But something darker moved beneath the surface.

Kael sat alone in his restricted quarters, a simple stone room with only a bed, a desk, and the forge tools he was allowed. He flexed his fingers, tracing the faint cracks still pulsing under his skin.

The memory-voice whispered again:

"They will come… do not falter."

Kael shivered. He hadn't known it yet, but the sect's disciples didn't all see him as a student… or even as a person.

Suspicious Eyes

Three days after the arena incident, Kael noticed glances.

One evening, a pair of disciples approached him under the pretense of "offering guidance."

"You've got raw power," one said, a tall, lean boy named Malren. "But it's dangerous. Dangerous to you… and everyone around."

Kael narrowed his eyes. "Dangerous how?"

"Uncontrolled fragments can—" Malren paused, then smiled. "You might even destroy the sect if you don't learn to follow orders."

Something in his tone didn't match his words. Kael felt it instinctively. Hunger. Malice.

The other boy, smaller, wiry, named Tavin, stepped closer. "We're just here to help," he said. But the way he shifted his weight, fingers brushing the small daggers at his belt… Kael's broken sense of danger flared.

Later that night, Kael was sharpening a small weapon he'd begun forging — a jagged blade infused with residual fragment energy.

Footsteps echoed in the corridor. Not ordinary steps. Quiet. Purposeful.

Two shadows lunged through the door.

Malren and Tavin.

"Time to test your 'obedience,'" Malren sneered, drawing a short blade infused with his fire aura.

Kael's instincts kicked in. He didn't hesitate.

Broken Heaven Energy surged.

The air around him twisted.

Malren's flames struck first — a tight spiral of heat aimed for Kael's chest.

Kael barely raised his hand.

The flames didn't burn.

They cracked.

Reality tore.

The corridor itself shivered.

Tavin tried to flank him. Kael spun, smashing the jagged fragment blade into the wall beside Tavin — splintering stone flew everywhere, cutting the boy's arm.

The two attackers froze. Not from fear… but awe.

Kael's fists cracked the floor. The room trembled as if the sect itself protested his power.

"Stop!" Kael roared. "I won't fight you unless you try to kill me!"

Malren's expression twisted into hatred. "You think your tricks will save you here?"

Kael's vision went black for a heartbeat. Then flashes: golden palaces. Chains stretching across the sky. A colossal being breaking against the heavens.

"Break the cage…"

His fists struck the floor again — a pulse of energy erupted, shattering stone, throwing the two disciples backward against the walls.

Consequences

The commotion woke the elders. Master Rhyzen arrived, calm but deadly, flames spiraling like a storm around him.

Kael turned, ready to defend himself. But Rhyzen only surveyed the scene.

"Malren… Tavin…" Rhyzen said slowly. "Explain yourselves."

The two disciples stammered, pointing at Kael. "He… he attacked us!"

Rhyzen's eyes, piercing and unreadable, flicked to Kael. "Did you provoke them?"

"No," Kael said firmly. "They tried to kill me."

Rhyzen's lips pressed together. A long silence hung. Then:

"Kael… this is why I warned you. Not everyone in the sect sees your presence as a gift. Some see a weapon. Some see a threat."

Kael's chest tightened. A weapon. Not a student.

Rhyzen's aura flared briefly. "From now on, trust no one. Your strength will invite betrayal. That is the way of all who bear forbidden power."

Kael swallowed. The Broken Heaven Energy throbbed in his veins, impatient, hungry.

Outside, the broken sky trembled faintly. Another fissure appeared, barely visible to the naked eye.

And far beyond sight, something enormous shifted behind chains that were fraying.

The First Sovereign… or what remained of it… was stirring.
