Claire's POV
In the days that followed, Louis and I fell into a rotation without discussing it.
Our entire days were centered around Heather and her health.
Louis would stay through the night. I would go home, sleep, shower, eat something real, and come back in the morning. Then he would go. Then I would stay. Back and forth, one of us was always there, so Heather was never alone in that room.
I didn't suggest it. Neither did he. We just started doing it and kept going.
She came awake the second day of our visit. Louis had been the one she saw first.
I had gone home briefly to change. I saw through the doorway when she held his hand and he cried into her arms. My heart broke right there and then.
I couldn't bear to see him that way. Louis had always been a strong man, I'd never seen him so worn out and distraught. It pained me to watch him go through this. I knew most of the emotions came from the place of regret.
