The clash between Caelum and Valric split the forest in two.
Ice met lightning with a deafening crack, sending a shockwave through the towering pines. Snow burst from the branches overhead, falling in blinding sheets as the ground trembled beneath their feet.
Aeralyn stood at the center of it all, the Heart of Balance blazing above her like a second sun. Its light pulsed faster now—urgent, alive—feeding power into her veins and out into the forest around them.
The trees answered.
Roots tore through the frozen earth, thick and coiling, slamming into Dominion soldiers and throwing them off their feet. Branches bent low, striking like whips, disarming attackers and forcing them back. The very ground shifted, uneven and unpredictable, as if the forest itself had risen to defend its territory.
Still, Valric advanced.
His blade carved through a wall of ice Caelum raised, shattering it into glittering fragments. Blue energy crackled around him, raw and violent, pushing against Caelum's controlled frost.
"You're holding back," Valric said, voice sharp with amusement. "Even now."
Caelum's eyes flashed. "And you're overreaching."
Their weapons collided again—ice and lightning screaming as they struck. Caelum stepped back, sliding across the snow as he redirected the force, frost spiraling outward to shield the others.
Nearby, Rovan fought like a storm of steel.
His spear cut wide arcs through the battlefield, knocking back soldier after soldier. One lunged at him from the side, blade aimed for his ribs—he pivoted, slammed the butt of his spear into the soldier's chest, and sent him crashing into a tree.
"Stay down!" Rovan barked.
Lysa moved behind him like a shadow, arrows flying in precise, deadly rhythm. Each shot struck a weak point—shoulder joints, exposed necks, glowing runes etched into armor.
"Left!" she called.
Rovan didn't hesitate. He spun, blocking a strike that would have caught Teren off guard.
Teren stumbled back, breathing hard. "Thanks!"
"Focus!" Rovan snapped. "Or you won't need saving next time."
Teren gritted his teeth and raised his weapon again, determination overriding fear.
---
At the center of the chaos, Aeralyn felt the Heart surge.
It wasn't just reacting anymore.
It was guiding her.
She lifted her hands slowly, feeling the balance between warmth and frost—the same balance she and Caelum had touched before.
"Not just power…" she whispered.
"…connection."
The Heart flared brighter.
Golden light spread through the forest floor, weaving through roots and stone, touching every tree around them.
For a brief moment—
Everything stilled.
Even Valric paused.
"What… is this?" he muttered.
Aeralyn's eyes glowed faintly gold as she stepped forward.
"You said the Heart belongs to the Dominion," she said calmly.
"But you're wrong."
She raised her hand.
"It belongs to the world."
The forest responded.
A massive surge of energy erupted outward—not violent, but overwhelming. Roots rose like walls, separating the Dominion soldiers from the group. Snow lifted into the air, swirling into a radiant storm of gold and white.
Several soldiers dropped their weapons, shielding their eyes.
Even Valric staggered back slightly.
Caelum felt it too.
The cold within him shifted—not suppressed, not overpowered—but balanced.
For the first time, it didn't feel like a burden.
It felt… whole.
He stepped beside Aeralyn.
Their powers intertwined again.
This time, it wasn't forced.
It was natural.
Frost curled around the golden light, not clashing but shaping it—giving it structure.
Valric's expression hardened.
"Enough of this."
He raised his blade high.
The runes along his armor flared violently.
The forest recoiled.
The balance broke.
A sudden explosion of blue energy blasted outward from Valric, tearing through roots and branches alike. Trees splintered. Snow vaporized. The golden light flickered.
Aeralyn gasped as the force pushed her back.
The Heart wavered in the air.
"He's disrupting it!" she shouted.
Caelum stepped forward instantly, raising a wall of ice to shield her.
Valric advanced through the destruction, his power surging wildly now.
"You think harmony will save you?" he said coldly.
"Power decides the fate of this world—not balance."
He struck the ice barrier.
It shattered.
Caelum staggered, dropping to one knee as the force of the blow rippled through him.
"Caelum!" Aeralyn cried.
Rovan moved to intercept, but three soldiers blocked his path.
"Go!" he shouted. "We've got this!"
Lysa fired arrow after arrow, trying to slow Valric, but he deflected them effortlessly.
Teren ran forward, desperate. "We have to stop him!"
Aeralyn steadied herself.
The Heart pulsed again—stronger this time.
Not in fear.
In defiance.
She took a deep breath.
Then stepped forward.
"No," she said quietly.
"We end this now."
She reached up and grabbed the Heart.
For the first time—
She touched it fully.
Light exploded.
---
The world changed.
Sound vanished.
The battlefield disappeared.
Aeralyn stood in a vast, endless space of white and gold.
Before her stood two figures.
One wreathed in frost.
The other glowing with warmth.
The First Prince.
The First Warm-Bearer.
"You've come far," the Warm-Bearer said gently.
"But the choice remains."
Aeralyn's voice was steady.
"What choice?"
The First Prince stepped forward.
"Balance is not given," he said. "It is chosen. Again and again."
"If you wield the Heart alone," the Warm-Bearer added, "you will tip the world toward warmth."
"If he wields it alone," the Prince continued, "it will fall to winter."
Aeralyn understood.
She turned.
And reached out her hand.
---
Back in the forest—
Time snapped forward again.
Aeralyn stood glowing with golden light, the Heart blazing in her grasp.
Caelum looked up from the ground, breath unsteady.
She met his gaze.
"Together," she said.
He didn't hesitate.
He took her hand.
The moment their hands touched—
Power erupted.
Not warm.
Not cold.
Balanced.
A massive wave of energy burst outward, sweeping across the battlefield.
Valric's eyes widened.
"No—!"
The wave struck him.
His lightning shattered.
His armor cracked.
He was thrown backward across the snow, slamming into the base of a tree.
Silence fell.
The remaining Dominion soldiers froze.
The forest stilled.
Aeralyn and Caelum stood side by side, their joined hands glowing with intertwined power.
The Heart hovered between them, shining brighter than ever before.
Valric struggled to rise, breathing hard.
"This… isn't over," he said through clenched teeth.
Caelum's voice was calm again—but stronger now.
"No," he said.
"It's just beginning."
Valric signaled his remaining soldiers.
Reluctantly, they retreated into the forest shadows, disappearing as quickly as they had come.
The battle was over.
For now.
---
The forest slowly calmed.
Roots sank back into the earth.
Branches stilled.
Snow drifted gently once more.
Aeralyn released Caelum's hand.
The Heart dimmed slightly, returning to its steady pulse.
Rovan let out a long breath.
"Well," he said, "that was… something."
Teren collapsed into the snow.
"I think I'm done fighting for today."
Lysa lowered her bow, eyes still scanning the trees.
"They'll be back."
Caelum nodded.
"Yes."
Aeralyn looked at the Heart.
Then at her companions.
"Then we'll be ready."
She turned toward the deeper forest ahead.
"Because now…"
Her voice was steady.
"…we know what we're fighting for."
And as the group moved forward, the forest no longer felt like a threat.
It felt like an ally.
But far beyond the trees—
Valric watched from the shadows.
And he was smiling.
