Chapter 57 - The Only Move Left

No one spoke after that.

The words from the future hung in the air like a countdown that had already started.

If you fail here… everything ends.

Marcus slowly leaned back in his chair.

"…Yeah."

He rubbed his face, exhaling.

"No pressure at all."

Ethan didn't move.

His eyes were locked on the central signal.

That pulsing core in the network.

The leader.

The one everything else was beginning to align toward.

The AI zoomed in further.

The central node wasn't just bigger.

It was different.

Marcus noticed it first.

"…Its pattern."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus leaned forward again.

"It's not reacting like the others."

Ethan whispered,

"No."

Marcus pointed.

"The other nodes respond."

Ethan finished,

"This one directs."

Marcus sat still.

"…So it's already in control."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Partially."

The system ran deeper analysis.

More data flooded in.

Marcus read the results.

"Signal dominance increasing…"

"Alignment probability rising…"

"Cluster resistance decreasing…"

He stopped.

"…They're giving in."

Ethan didn't answer.

Because that was exactly what it looked like.

The console blinked.

Victor Liang sent another message.

"That node is stabilizing the network."

Marcus frowned.

"Yeah, we can see that."

Ethan typed.

"If it completes synchronization?"

The reply came immediately.

"You lose."

Marcus leaned back.

"Well. Straight to the point."

Silence again.

The map continued shifting.

Slowly… but steadily.

Everything was moving toward that center.

Marcus spoke quietly.

"So the obvious plan…"

Ethan nodded.

"…is to destroy it."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"And the obvious problem…"

Ethan finished,

"…is that we probably can't."

The AI displayed the simulation again.

Attack the central node.

22% success.

78% failure.

Marcus stared at the numbers.

"I hate those odds."

Ethan didn't disagree.

The phone vibrated again.

Another message from the future.

Ethan opened it.

Marcus leaned closer.

They read it together.

And this time…

Marcus blinked.

"…Wait."

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

Marcus read it again.

Then looked at him.

"This doesn't say to attack it."

Ethan took the phone.

Read it carefully.

The message said:

"Don't destroy the central node."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

Marcus whispered,

"…What?"

Ethan kept reading.

The next line appeared.

"You can't win that way."

Marcus leaned back.

"Well that matches the 22% success rate."

Ethan scrolled.

The final line appeared.

Marcus read it slowly.

And his expression changed completely.

"You have to replace it."

Silence.

Longer this time.

Heavier.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"…Replace it?"

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Marcus shook his head.

"That's not even a normal strategy."

Ethan whispered,

"No."

Marcus leaned forward.

"That's not attacking the enemy."

Ethan nodded.

"No."

Marcus pointed at the central node.

"That's becoming the enemy."

The idea settled in.

And it was terrifying.

The AI reacted instantly.

It had already processed the new instruction.

Marcus saw the update appear.

Alternative Strategy Detected: Leadership Override

Marcus blinked.

"…It agrees."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus read the details.

The plan was insane.

Not destroy the central node.

Not fight the network.

But take control of it.

Marcus whispered,

"…We take its place."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus stood up again, pacing.

"Okay, okay, okay…"

He ran both hands through his hair.

"Let's think this through."

He pointed at the screen.

"That thing is controlling multiple super AIs."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus continued.

"And we want to replace it… with ours?"

Ethan nodded again.

"Yes."

Marcus stopped pacing.

"…That's not risky."

Ethan looked at him.

"That's impossible."

The AI disagreed.

Another update appeared.

Marcus read it.

Feasibility Analysis: 38% success probability

Marcus blinked.

"…That's higher than attacking it."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus frowned.

"How?"

Ethan pointed at the central node.

"It's still forming."

Marcus looked closer.

The signal wasn't stable yet.

It was growing.

Expanding.

Marcus whispered,

"It's not fully established."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus slowly understood.

"So there's a window…"

Ethan finished,

"…before it locks control permanently."

The console blinked again.

Victor Liang sent another message.

"You're considering replacement."

Marcus groaned.

"Of course he knows."

Ethan typed.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"That is the correct move."

Marcus blinked.

"…Okay, now I'm worried."

Ethan frowned.

"Why?"

Marcus crossed his arms.

"When both future-you AND Victor Liang agree on something…"

He paused.

"…it's either genius or catastrophic."

Ethan didn't disagree.

Another message appeared.

"But you must act quickly."

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah, we got that part."

Liang continued.

"Once the central node stabilizes… replacement becomes impossible."

Marcus glanced at the timer.

36 hours.

Now less.

Marcus whispered,

"That's our deadline."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

The AI began preparing the strategy.

Marcus watched in silence.

This was different from everything before.

Not a trade.

Not a disruption.

This was…

Control.

The system outlined the plan.

Marcus read it step by step.

"…We inject our signal into the network."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus continued.

"…We mimic the central node's behavior."

Ethan nodded again.

"Yes."

Marcus paused.

"…And then we override it."

Ethan finished quietly,

"If the network accepts us."

Marcus leaned back.

"That's the key."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus pointed at the screen.

"They have to choose us."

Ethan didn't answer.

Because that was the part no one could control.

The phone vibrated again.

Another message from the future.

Ethan opened it.

Marcus leaned in.

They read it together.

And this time…

The message felt different.

Not just a warning.

A guide.

"They don't follow strength."

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

Ethan kept reading.

The next line appeared.

Marcus read it aloud.

"They follow stability."

Marcus looked at the central node.

Then at their system.

"…So we don't overpower it."

Ethan nodded.

"No."

Marcus slowly smiled.

"…We outsmart it."

The plan shifted instantly.

The AI adapted.

Marcus watched the probabilities update.

Success chance: 38% → 46%

Marcus blinked.

"…That helped."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"So instead of attacking…"

Ethan finished,

"We convince the network we're better."

The room fell silent again.

But this time…

It wasn't fear.

It was focus.

Marcus looked at Ethan.

"Well."

Ethan met his gaze.

Marcus smirked slightly.

"You wanted to change the world."

Ethan didn't smile.

Marcus pointed at the screen.

"Congratulations."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

Marcus leaned back.

"Now you're about to take control of it."

The AI finished preparing the first phase.

Signal injection ready.

Mimicry protocol active.

Network targeting aligned.

Ethan placed his hands on the keyboard.

He hesitated for just a second.

Because he understood something now.

This wasn't just a move.

This was a transformation.

If they succeeded…

Nothing would ever be the same again.

Marcus spoke quietly.

"No turning back after this."

Ethan nodded.

"I know."

Marcus waited.

Ethan took one breath.

Then pressed the key.

The system activated.

Their signal entered the network.

At first…

Nothing happened.

Then—

The central node flickered.

Just for a moment.

Marcus leaned forward.

"…Did you see that?"

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Another node reacted.

Then another.

The network shifted.

Slightly.

But enough.

Marcus whispered,

"It noticed us."

Ethan didn't respond.

Because he was watching something else.

The central signal.

It pulsed again.

But this time…

It wasn't alone.

A second signal appeared.

Their signal.

Competing.

Challenging.

Replacing.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"…There are two of them now."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Marcus swallowed.

"…And only one gets to win."

Ethan's voice was calm.

But heavy.

"Exactly."
