creak; it hummed with a low-frequency vibration that made his new metallic bones rattle.
The interior was a single, circular room illuminated by a soft, violet glow emanating from the floor. In the center sat a stone pedestal, and upon it lay a circlet of jagged black iron. It wasn't gold, it had no jewels, and it looked more like a crown of thorns than a crown of kings.
[Item Identified: The First Crown (Broken Fragment)]
Rank: Mythic (Growth-type)
Effect: Increases Willpower by 10. Unlocks the skill [Sovereign's Gaze].
Description: The original crown worn by the First Emperor during the Rebellion of the Mortal Dust. It was shattered when he struck the Heavens. This is the 'Circlet of Will'.
Cain reached out. The moment his fingers brushed the cold iron, the circlet didn't just sit on his head—it dissolved into a fine black smoke and wrapped around his brow. He didn't feel the weight of it physically, but his mind suddenly felt as though it had been forged in a furnace. His vision cleared, and the "Hidden Map" of the Forbidden Peaks in his System expanded, revealing secret tunnels, hidden mana veins, and the locations of every living creature within a mile.
[Willpower: 40 —> 50]
[Skill Unlocked: Sovereign's Gaze (Rank C)]
Description: For 60 seconds, you can perceive the 'Flow' of all mana. You can see through illusions, find hidden traps, and identify the structural weaknesses in any enemy's defense.
"I can see it now," Cain whispered. He looked at the floor of the pagoda. Through the solid stone, he saw a glowing vein of violet energy—the true exit of the tomb.
"Cain! Look at the sky!" Elena pointed toward the entrance of the pagoda.
Outside, the violet nebula was shivering. The calm, starlit sky of the sub-dimension was being pierced by jagged cracks of white light. From the world above, muffled explosions began to echo, growing louder with every passing second.
BOOM. BOOM.
The Second Elder was here. He was using a "Mountain-Breaking Talisman" to force his way through the sealed spiral staircase. He was desperate, and a desperate Level 25 cultivator was a dangerous beast.
"He's faster than I expected," Cain noted, his voice devoid of fear. He looked at his current status. He had 10 Stat Points left from his recent Level Up. If he was going to face the fallout of the Elder's rage, he needed to be more than just fast.
[System, allocate 10 Stat Points to Vitality.]
[Vitality: 17 —> 27]
[HP: 240 —> 550]
His muscles felt denser, his skin becoming tougher than the reinforced leather armor he wore. He turned to the center of the pagoda and slammed his foot onto a specific tile—the 'Heart' he had identified with his new Sovereign's Gaze.
The floor slid away with a heavy grind, revealing a vertical shaft that glowed with a soft, inviting white light.
"Jump," Cain commanded.
"What? Cain, it looks like a bottomless drop!" Elena cried, looking into the glowing abyss.
"It's a teleportation vein," Cain explained, grabbing her hand firmly. "The Emperor didn't build a tomb to be a prison; he built it to be a fortress with a back door. If we stay, the Second Elder will trap us here and collapse the dimension. If we jump, we'll be ten miles away in the Forbidden Peaks before he even touches the pedestal."
Elena looked back at the cracking sky of the nebula, then at Cain's glowing amber eyes. She nodded, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes tight.
They jumped.
[Location: Northern Border - The Whispering Ravine (Exit Point)]
The sensation was like being pulled through a needle-eye. A second later, Cain and Elena hit the cold, hard ground. The air here was thin and biting, filled with a frost that smelled of ancient snow and iron. They were no longer in the lush, damp Ashen Woods. They were on the jagged slopes of the Forbidden Peaks, where the very rocks seemed to scream in the wind.
Cain stood up, shielding his eyes from the swirling snow. Above them, the massive peaks blocked out the moon, looking like the ribs of a giant, prehistoric skeleton.
"We're out," Elena coughed, shivering violently in her thin robes. "But it's so cold... Cain, we don't have enough supplies. We'll freeze before morning."
"We won't need to stay in the cold for long," Cain said. He looked at the base of the nearest peak. With his Sovereign's Gaze, he could see the 'mana signatures' of creatures nearby.
[Warning: Rank 3 Frost-Bite Spider detected 150 meters North.]
[Level: 22]
Cain didn't look worried. On the contrary, his slitted eyes danced with a dark excitement. "Elena, remember when I said I'd show you the difference between a wolf and what comes after? A Rank 3 beast is exactly the 'material' I need to test my new Class."
He opened his hand, and a swirling vortex of violet energy appeared in his palm.
"System, initiate [Skill Synthesis]."
[Merging: 'Glacial Aegis' (C) + 'Void-Step Impact' (C)]
[Warning: High Mana Cost. Probability of failure: 15%]
[Synthesizing...]
Cain felt the mana being sucked out of his core at a terrifying rate. He fell to one knee, sweat freezing on his brow as the two skills fought for dominance within his soul. One was the shield of frost he had stolen, the other was the destructive impact of his dash.
Blend them, Cain thought, blood leaking from his nose. I am the Monarch. I don't follow the rules of the skills; the skills follow ME!
[Success!]
[New Skill Created: 'Frost-Void Shatter' (Rank B - Unique)]
Description: Combine a high-speed dash with a freezing explosion upon impact. Deals 250% physical damage and inflicts 'Deep Freeze'. Enemies killed are instantly 'Shattered' into mana fragments for consumption.
Cain stood up, his aura flaring. The blue light of the mountains seemed to dim in his presence.
"The Second Elder will spend the next hour searching an empty tomb," Cain said, starting to walk toward the spider's lair. "By the time he realizes we aren't there, I'll be Level 15. And once I hit Level 20, the hunter becomes the hunted."
Elena followed him, her fear slowly being replaced by a strange, quiet confidence. She didn't understand the 'System' or the 'Monarch' class, but she understood one thing: In a world of dragons, she was walking beside the only man who knew how to eat them.
