Chapter 15 - The peddler of stars

When the city is wrapped in a deep slumber, Nilu Mia sets out with his battered old bicycle. Fixed to the back is a peculiar glass box that glows with a faint silvery aura. While the neighbors dismiss him as a madman, Nilu Mia calls himself something else—'The Peddler of Memories.'

He doesn't go from door to door selling stars; instead, he wanders the streets gathering the 'lost moments' people have left behind.

One night, he stopped in front of a dilapidated house. An elderly woman sat on the porch, her hollow eyes fixed on the empty sky. Nilu Mia parked his cycle and stepped forward. "Aunty," he said softly, "Would you like an old smile? It's very cheap."

The woman looked up in surprise. Nilu Mia opened his glass box and pulled out a sphere of pale, shimmering light. As he placed it in her hands, a memory from a rainy afternoon many years ago flooded back to her—the very first time her young son had called her "Ma." Her eyes welled up with tears, but her face glowed with a divine sense of peace.

Nilu Mia took no money. He simply said, "That smile is now bright in your heart again. That is profit enough for me."

Before dawn breaks, Nilu Mia sits by the riverbank. The lights in his box slowly fade away. He knows that once daylight hits, people will become mechanical again, forgetting their own small sparks of happiness.

What the city doesn't know is that Nilu Mia has no memories of his own. He fills the void in his own chest by giving away the lost moments of others. He knows that while sorrow in this world is endless, a single drop of an old, happy memory can act like a lamp in the darkest of nights.
