Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – Oath and Conflict

________

The temple was no longer shaking.

But the air remained heavy.

The Core of Nerathis pulsed slowly, unstable, casting flickering light across the chamber.

No one spoke for a moment.

The battle had ended…

But the real problem had just begun.

Seraphina stood near the center, her glowing blade now dimmed but still in hand. Her sharp eyes moved across the group.

Izumi.

Dianara.

Mira.

And finally—

Lior.

The fragment bearer.

"…So," she said calmly.

"You are the ones involved in this."

Mira crossed her arms.

"Wow. Great observation."

Seraphina didn't react.

Her gaze shifted slightly.

"…Mira."

Mira's smirk faded just a little.

"…Seraphina."

The tension between them was immediate.

Izumi looked between the two.

"You guys know each other?"

Mira sighed.

"Unfortunately."

Seraphina spoke, her tone calm but firm.

"She is a Paladin."

Izumi blinked.

"…Yeah, we know."

Seraphina's eyes narrowed slightly.

"No."

"She is an undisciplined Paladin."

Mira's ears twitched.

"Oh here we go."

Dianara stepped in quickly.

"This is not the time."

Seraphina ignored her.

"She uses forbidden blood magic."

Her gaze sharpened.

"That is against the code."

Mira's expression turned cold.

"Then arrest me."

A brief silence fell.

The tension between them rose instantly.

Izumi stepped forward.

"Hey—"

Seraphina raised a hand.

Stopping him.

Her eyes remained on Mira.

"…We will address that later."

Mira scoffed.

"Yeah. Sure."

Dianara exhaled softly.

"Can we focus?"

She pointed toward the Core.

"That thing is still unstable."

That finally shifted the conversation.

Seraphina looked toward the glowing orb.

Her expression turned serious again.

"…Explain."

Dianara stepped forward.

"This is the Core of Nerathis."

"It controls the entire city… including the seal beneath it."

Seraphina's eyes narrowed.

"…Seal?"

Izumi nodded.

"There's something huge under this city."

"We saw it."

Dianara continued.

"The city was built as a prison."

"To contain an ancient entity."

Seraphina went silent for a moment.

Then she looked at Lior.

"And the fragment?"

Lior hesitated.

"…It chose me."

Seraphina studied him carefully.

Then she nodded once.

"…I see."

She turned back toward the Core.

"The Paladin Order has records of the fragments."

"They are pieces of a greater artifact."

"The Forbidden Scroll."

Dianara nodded.

"We know."

Izumi added—

"They're used to maintain a seal."

Seraphina looked at him.

"…You know more than I expected."

Izumi scratched his head.

"Yeah… long story."

Mira smirked.

"Old elf teacher."

Seraphina ignored that.

Her gaze hardened slightly.

"If the fragment has awakened…"

"…then the seal here is weakening."

Dianara nodded.

"That's exactly the problem."

"And the Architect knows it now."

Seraphina turned toward the broken entrance of the temple.

"…Then this location is no longer just a ruin."

Her voice became firm.

"It is now a battlefield."

The Fragment's Burden

Lior stepped forward slowly.

His voice was quiet.

"…What happens if the seal breaks?"

No one answered immediately.

Izumi clenched his fist.

Dianara looked away.

Mira sighed.

Seraphina finally spoke.

"…Everything dies."

Silence filled the chamber.

Lior's hand trembled.

The fragment glowed faintly.

"I don't want this…"

"I'm not strong enough…"

Izumi stepped beside him.

"You don't have to do it alone."

Mira added casually—

"Yeah."

"We're stuck in this mess too."

Dianara nodded.

"We'll figure it out."

Seraphina watched them carefully.

Then she spoke.

"…The fragment chose you for a reason."

Lior looked up.

"…What reason?"

Seraphina's voice was calm.

"That is what we must discover."

The Next Move

Dianara turned toward the Core again.

"There's still something we don't understand."

She pointed at the glowing energy streams.

"The system is incomplete."

"The fragment activated it… but not fully."

Izumi frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," Dianara said,

"There are more control points."

"Other parts of the city connected to this Core."

Mira grinned.

"So more ruins. More monsters. More fun."

Seraphina shook her head slightly.

"More danger."

She looked at Dianara.

"Can you locate these points?"

Dianara stepped closer to the Core.

"…Maybe."

She placed her hand on one of the glowing streams.

The Core reacted.

Light pulsed outward.

Ancient symbols appeared again.

A map began forming in the air.

Izumi's eyes widened.

"Is that… the whole city?"

Dianara focused.

"…Yes."

Multiple glowing points appeared across the ruins.

Some near.

Some far.

One of them—

Far deeper than the rest—

glowed differently.

Darker.

Heavier.

Seraphina noticed it immediately.

"…That one."

Dianara nodded slowly.

"…That's the deepest layer."

Izumi frowned.

"Let me guess."

"That's where the sealed thing is?"

Dianara didn't answer directly.

But her silence said enough.

Ending Build-Up

Seraphina turned to the group.

"Then we move."

Mira stretched slightly.

"Finally."

Izumi looked at the map.

"So what's the plan?"

Seraphina's voice became firm.

"We secure the control points."

"Stabilize the system."

"And protect the fragment bearer."

She looked toward the dark entrance of the deeper ruins.

"Before the Architect returns."

The Core pulsed again.

The map flickered.

The deeper point glowed once more.

And far beneath the city—

Something moved.

The glowing map slowly faded.

The chamber returned to its dim, flickering light.

But now—

They had a direction.

Seraphina turned toward the group, her expression firm and commanding.

"We don't have time to waste."

She pointed toward one of the nearer glowing points they had just seen.

"We start with the closest control point."

Dianara nodded.

"That's the safest option."

"It should help stabilize part of the system."

Mira stretched lazily.

"Boring choice."

Izumi sighed.

"It's the smart choice."

Mira smirked.

"Same thing."

Lior stood quietly beside them, still holding the fragment.

It pulsed faintly now.

As if it was… waiting.

Seraphina looked at him.

"You will stay in the center."

Her tone was not a suggestion.

"You are the priority."

Lior nodded nervously.

"O-Okay…"

Team Formation

They began moving toward the temple exit.

The broken entrance still drifted with dust and fragments of stone.

Outside—

The ruins of Nerathis glowed faintly in the distance.

But something had changed.

The city felt more… unstable.

The currents shifted strangely.

The light flickered.

Izumi looked around.

"…It feels worse than before."

Dianara agreed.

"The Core is still unstable."

"Activating the system without full synchronization is causing imbalance."

Mira rolled her eyes.

"In simple words?"

Dianara answered flatly.

"The city is breaking."

Mira grinned.

"Now that I understand."

Seraphina stepped forward.

"We move in formation."

She pointed quickly.

"Mira—front scout."

Mira raised an eyebrow.

"You're ordering me?"

Seraphina didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Mira stared at her for a second.

Then smirked.

"…Fine."

"But if I die, it's your fault."

She vanished into the shadows ahead.

Seraphina continued.

"Izumi—frontline."

"Dianara—support and analysis."

"I will guard the rear."

Her eyes moved to Lior.

"And you stay between us."

Izumi nodded.

"Got it."

Into the Ruins Again

They left the temple.

The streets of Nerathis were quieter now.

Too quiet.

The glowing ruins stretched endlessly around them.

Broken buildings.

Collapsed towers.

Ancient statues watching silently.

Mira's voice echoed from ahead.

"…Something's off."

Izumi frowned.

"More monsters?"

"No."

Her voice was lower now.

"…No monsters."

That was worse.

Dianara looked around carefully.

"The corrupted beasts disappeared earlier…"

"That means something drove them away."

Izumi tightened his grip on his sword.

"…Something stronger."

Seraphina's hand rested on her blade.

"Stay alert."

They moved deeper into the ruins.

Toward the nearest control point.

The glowing mark from the map faintly guided them.

After several minutes—

They reached it.

A smaller structure compared to the temple.

But still ancient.

A circular platform surrounded by broken pillars.

In the center—

A glowing device.

Similar energy to the Core.

But weaker.

Dianara stepped forward.

"This is one of the control nodes."

Izumi looked around.

"So we just activate it?"

"…It's not that simple."

Dianara approached the device carefully.

"It needs synchronization with the fragment."

Lior stepped forward slowly.

"…So I have to do it again?"

Seraphina nodded.

"Yes."

"We will protect you."

Mira's voice came from above.

"Better do it fast."

She stood on top of a broken pillar, looking out into the ruins.

"…We've got company."

Everyone froze.

Izumi turned.

"…Where?"

Mira pointed toward the shadows.

"There."

At first—

Nothing.

Then—

A shape moved.

Slowly.

Something emerged from the darkness.

Not like the previous beasts.

This one was different.

Larger.

More stable.

Its body was not broken or corrupted.

It looked… complete.

Ancient armor covered its form.

Glowing lines of energy flowed perfectly across its body.

Dianara's eyes widened.

"…An Advanced Guardian."

Izumi frowned.

"That sounds bad."

"It is."

The creature stepped forward.

Its presence alone was heavier than anything they had faced so far.

The ground beneath them trembled slightly.

Seraphina drew her blade.

"Prepare yourselves."

The guardian raised its arm.

A weapon formed from pure energy.

"Lior," Dianara said quickly,

"start the synchronization now!"

Lior nodded, stepping toward the control node.

The fragment began glowing again.

But—

The guardian moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

It appeared in front of them instantly.

Its weapon swung down.

BOOM.

Izumi barely blocked it.

The force slammed him into the ground.

"…This thing is way stronger!"

Mira dropped from above.

"Good."

Her daggers glowed red.

"Now it's interesting."

She attacked.

But—

CLANG.

Her blades bounced off.

"…Okay, not that interesting."

Seraphina stepped forward.

Her aura expanded again.

Golden light filled the area.

"Fall back."

Izumi pulled back immediately.

The guardian turned toward her.

Its glowing eyes locked onto her presence.

Seraphina raised her blade.

"Radiant Strike."

She moved.

A flash of light.

The blade collided with the guardian.

BOOM.

The impact shook the entire area.

For the first time—

The guardian stepped back.

Mira whistled.

"Alright."

"You're useful."

Seraphina didn't respond.

Her eyes remained locked on the enemy.

Behind them—

Lior reached the control node.

The fragment hovered above it.

The system began activating.

But the guardian roared.

And charged again.

The battle had just begun.
