Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 - Shadows that Whisper

Jason stepped through the broken mirrors and into a narrow corridor carved from dull gray metal. The floor plates trembled faintly beneath his boots.

A cold wind drifted through the passage.

Not steady wind.

Breathing wind.

Jason frowned. "Great. Another friendly hallway."

The breeze brushed against his neck like fingers. "Jason…"

He froze.

"…you look exhausted."

His shoulders tightened. "Yeah, that's new."

Dust spiraled along the corridor floor. The voice returned, softer this time.

"You've proven enough already."

Jason walked forward carefully. "Nice try."

Another whisper floated past his ear.

"You don't have to keep fighting."

A second voice joined it.

"Sit down… just for a minute."

Jason rubbed his temple. "You guys rehearse this?"

The wind curled around him again.

"You could leave this place," the voices murmured. "No more trials. No more pressure."

Jason stopped walking.

His eyes narrowed.

"Leave?" he said quietly. "That's the pitch?"

The air shifted.

More whispers joined the first.

"You deserve rest."

"You tried harder than anyone expected."

"Go back to your life. No one will blame you."

Jason laughed under his breath.

"Funny," he said. "Everyone did blame me back home."

The wind hissed.

"You're tired, Jason."

"I noticed."

The voices softened again.

"Just stop."

"Breathe."

"Sit."

Jason leaned against the cold wall for a moment, breathing slowly.

Then he pushed himself upright again.

"Nice try," he said. "But I'm still walking."

The corridor stretched ahead into dim fog.

The wind thickened.

Something moved inside the drifting air.

Jason slowed.

Shapes were forming.

Pale outlines.

Faces emerging from the wind itself.

Eyes glowing softly.

Translucent bodies rising like mist given shape.

Jason squinted.

"Well," he muttered.

"That's definitely not wind."

The creatures hovered silently in the corridor air.

Their voices spoke together.

"Jason…"

Their smiles widened.

"Stay with us."

Jason stepped forward cautiously.

"Alright," he said. "Let's hear it."

The floating shapes drifted closer.

They were slender and almost human, their bodies woven from pale wind and shimmering dust. Long hair flowed like smoke. Their eyes glowed faintly blue.

One tilted her head.

"You're tired," she whispered.

Jason folded his arms.

"That seems to be the theme today."

Another voice floated beside him.

"We can help."

Jason raised an eyebrow. "That's suspicious."

"You don't need to struggle anymore."

The corridor ahead shimmered.

Suddenly the metal walls faded.

Warm sunlight flooded the hallway.

Green grass stretched out before him.

Jason blinked.

"Okay… that's impressive."

The Echo Sirens smiled.

"You could stay here."

Jason walked forward slowly.

The grass felt soft under his boots.

A lake shimmered nearby.

A quiet cabin stood beside it.

Jason stared.

"That's… dangerously convincing."

One Siren floated beside him.

"Rest."

Jason shook his head slightly.

"I don't remember this place."

"You could."

Jason walked toward the cabin.

"Alright," he muttered. "Let's see where this goes."

He reached the door. Opened it. He stepped through. Metal floor.

Cold corridor. Jason blinked.

He was standing exactly where he started.

He frowned.

"…hold on."

A Siren drifted closer.

"Something wrong?"

Jason scratched his head.

"Pretty sure I just walked somewhere."

"You did."

Jason pointed down the corridor.

"So why am I still here?"

The Sirens smiled gently.

"You chose comfort."

Jason narrowed his eyes.

"Okay… that's annoying."

He walked again. Faster this time.

He reached another doorway.

Opened it.

Cold metal floor again.

Same spot. Jason stopped.

His shoulders slowly stiffened. He looked behind him.

The corridor hadn't changed.

His voice dropped.

"…how many times have I done that?"

The Sirens' whispers deepened.

"More than you noticed."

Jason's stomach sank.

"Oh," he said quietly.

"That's bad."

The Sirens giggled.

Jason stood perfectly still.

The Echo Sirens circled slowly around him.

"You're frustrated," one whispered.

Jason inhaled slowly.

"I am."

Another voice drifted near his ear.

"You could stop trying."

Jason rubbed his face.

"I'm starting to think that's your only line."

"You're exhausted."

He exhaled.

"Well that part's true."

Jason closed his eyes.

The whispers grew louder.

"You're failing again."

"You always stop halfway."

"You never finish anything."

Jason exhaled slowly.

"Not helping."

The voices softened again.

"Rest."

"Escape."

"Relax."

Jason opened his eyes.

"I don't understand."

The word came out quiet.

But steady.

He looked down the corridor again.

This time he didn't move.

The Sirens waited.

Jason studied the floor.

Small scratches along the metal plates.

Dust patterns disturbed by footsteps.

His footsteps.

The same stretch.

Walked again and again.

"Oh," he murmured.

"You guys didn't trap the hallway."

The Sirens leaned closer.

Jason pointed forward.

"You trapped my attention."

Their smiles faltered.

Their whispers continued, frantically.

Jason took one careful step.

Then another. Slow. Measured.

Ignoring the whispers.

"Jason," one called urgently.

He kept walking.

"You're making a mistake."

Jason shrugged.

"That's kind of my brand."

The whispers sharpened.

"You'll fail again." Jason kept moving.

This time it didn't reset.

The Sirens flickered.

Their bodies thinning like smoke.

Jason smiled faintly.

"Thought so."

The voices weakened.

"Don't go… wait."

Jason walked past them.

"Focus beats noise," he said quietly.

The last Siren, in a final attempt to reach Jason stretched out its hand but dissolved into drifting light.

The corridor finally opened ahead.

Jason stepped forward,

And massive iron chains slammed across the passage with a thunderous crash.

The floor shook violently.

Jason stared at the blocked path.

"…well," he sighed.

"That can't be good."
