(MASON'S POV)
I couldn't breathe.
My back slammed against the rough bark of the oak tree, the texture scraping through my shirt as I tried to steady myself. My heart was out of control, pounding so hard it felt like it might break through my ribs. And in front of me… everything had gone wrong in a way my mind couldn't even process properly. It felt unreal, like I'd fallen into some kind of nightmare that refused to let me wake up.
Abigail—that Abigail—the one who had braided my hair, flipped pancakes like it was an art form, and pulled me into warm, easy hugs just hours ago… she wasn't the same person anymore.
One second, she was human. Strong, fearless, shoving that horned thing back without hesitation.

A sickening crack split the air. Her body jerked, twisted. Bones shifted under her skin in a way that made my stomach turn. Then fur burst out in a rush, deep red spreading over her like fire catching. It didn't feel real. It couldn't be real.
But it was.
