(LIAM'S POV)
I didn't wait to see if they followed. I turned and bolted through the open gate, my bare feet pounding against the dirt path that led into the forest. The trees loomed ahead, dark and endless, their branches reaching out like welcoming arms.
Behind me, I heard the sound of footsteps. Dozens of them. They were following me. All of them.
We plunged into the forest together.
The darkness swallowed us whole.
The canopy was so thick that barely any light filtered through, and the only way I could navigate was by the faint glow of the distant fires behind us and the occasional patch of moonlight that broke through the leaves. Branches whipped at my face. Roots grabbed at my feet. The air was thick with the smell of earth and moss and something wild.
I ran.
