(GILBERT'S POV)
"You're funny," he said when his laughter subsided, those amber-gold eyes still sparkling with amusement. "I like funny people. What's your name?"
I hesitated. Giving my name to a stranger felt dangerous—especially after everything I had been through tonight. Every instinct I had screamed at me to be careful, to keep my walls up, to not reveal anything about myself to this unknown entity. But something about this man made me want to trust him, despite my better judgment.
Maybe it was his intoxicating scent or maybe the way he had saved me without hesitation. Maybe it was the genuine warmth in his eyes, so different from the cold cruelty I had sensed in the Shadow Pack's territory. Or maybe it was just exhaustion—the bone-deep weariness of running from my problems for so long that I no longer had the strength to fight my instincts.
"Gilbert," I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper. "My name is Gilbert Edmund."
