(MASON'S POV)
The sound of someone turning a page brought me back to the present. I let out a quiet breath and straightened in my seat.
That was when I noticed the empty desk across from us.
My eyes lingered on it for a moment.
And suddenly, I thought of Caleb.
He used to sit next to me. Now his seat was empty.
Caleb hadn't been to school in weeks. He had simply disappeared from my life as quietly as he had once walked into it. No explanation. No goodbye. Nothing.
Sometimes I wondered if he had dropped out completely. Other times, I wondered if something had happened to him.
And, annoyingly, I still cared.
I hated admitting that to myself.
After everything Caleb had done to me, after the way he had treated me and made me feel like I wasn't good enough to stand beside him, some stupid part of me still worried about him.
Maybe it was because Caleb had once been my best friend. Or at least, I had considered him my best friend.
