Chapter 35 - Too close to ignore

Something didn't feel right.

From the moment I stepped into Kingston Group that morning…

I felt it.

That shift.

That tension.

That quiet sense that something was about to happen.

"Jessy," Nina called softly, walking toward me.

I turned.

"There's been a complaint."

My stomach tightened instantly.

"A complaint?"

She nodded.

"About you."

My fingers curled slightly.

"From who?"

She hesitated.

"They didn't say."

Of course they didn't.

But I already knew.

Vanessa.

"What kind of complaint?" I asked.

Nina lowered her voice.

"They said you're unfit to work. That you're hiding a condition that could 'affect the company's image.'"

My chest tightened.

Hard.

So this was her move.

Before I could respond—

"Jessy."

The supervisor again.

Serious.

Cold.

"Come with me."

The walk to the office felt longer than usual.

Heavier.

Like I was walking into something I couldn't control.

"Sit," she said.

I did.

Slowly.

"There's been a report filed against you," she said.

"I know."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Then you also know how serious this is."

I swallowed.

"Yes."

"Are you hiding something that affects your ability to work?"

The question landed.

Direct.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

For a moment…

Everything went silent.

Because this was it.

The line.

The one I had been avoiding.

"I—"

A knock.

Then the door opened.

Elias.

Again.

But this time…

He didn't just walk in.

He stepped in.

Fully.

Intentionally.

"Leave us," he said calmly.

The supervisor froze slightly.

"Sir, this is a formal—"

"I said leave."

Silence.

Then she stood.

And walked out.

The door closed.

And suddenly…

It was just the two of us.

The room felt smaller.

Quieter.

Too quiet.

Elias didn't sit.

Didn't move far.

He just stood there.

Looking at me.

"Is it true?" he asked.

His voice was lower now.

Less distant.

More… personal.

My heart beat faster.

Too fast.

"Why does it matter?" I asked quietly.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"Because it affects your position here."

"That's not what you're asking," I said.

Silence.

And for a second…

Something shifted.

Not in the room.

Between us.

"You're pregnant," he said.

Not a question.

A statement.

My breath caught.

"Yes."

The word hung in the air.

Heavy.

Real.

"And you chose to work here anyway."

"I chose to survive," I replied.

His eyes held mine.

Longer this time.

Deeper.

"You should have said something."

"And risk losing this job?" I asked.

Silence again.

But not cold.

Not distant.

Something else.

Something… conflicted.

"I wouldn't have let that happen," he said.

That sentence—

Shifted everything.

I frowned slightly.

"You don't know that."

"I do."

The certainty in his voice…

It wasn't normal.

It wasn't professional.

It was personal.

"You don't even know me," I said softly.

"Then let me," he replied.

My heart skipped.

Hard.

Too close.

This was too close.

Before I could respond—

The door burst open.

"Sir—"

The assistant rushed in.

"There's an issue downstairs."

Again.

Elias didn't look away from me immediately.

And in that second…

It felt like something almost happened.

Something neither of us was ready to name.

Then he stepped back.

Just slightly.

Distance.

Control.

"Stay here," he said.

And walked out.

But I didn't stay.

Again.

Downstairs…

The tension was worse this time.

Heavier.

Louder.

More public.

Vanessa stood there.

Smiling.

But it wasn't a normal smile.

It was victory.

"Oh good," she said when she saw me. "You're here."

"What have you done?" I asked quietly.

She stepped closer.

"I told them the truth," she said. "Or should I say… your truth?"

My chest tightened.

"You think you can just walk into a place like this and pretend everything is normal?" she continued.

Her voice was louder now.

Drawing attention.

"She's pregnant," she said.

Clear.

Sharp.

Public.

Silence.

Then whispers.

People turned.

Watched.

Judged.

There it was.

Exposed.

But before anything could spiral—

"Enough."

Elias.

His voice cut through everything.

Instantly.

Vanessa turned.

Still smiling.

"Did I say something wrong?"

"Yes," he said calmly.

"You're creating disruption."

"I'm revealing truth."

"You're trespassing."

That stopped her.

Security stepped forward immediately.

"You can't just throw me out," she said.

Elias stepped closer.

This time…

There was no distance.

No restraint.

"I can," he said quietly.

"And I am."

The tone—

Left no room for argument.

Vanessa's smile faded.

Just slightly.

But her eyes?

Still dangerous.

Still promising something worse.

"This isn't over," she said, looking directly at me.

Then she left.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Everyone was still watching.

Still whispering.

Elias turned.

His eyes found mine again.

And this time…

He didn't stay distant.

He walked toward me.

Slow.

Intentional.

Stopping just in front of me.

Too close.

"Back to work," he said.

But his voice was different now.

Lower.

Softer.

Only for me.

"Yes, sir," I whispered.

But neither of us moved immediately.

Because in that moment…

Something had already changed.

Not just professionally.

Not just emotionally.

But personally.

And even though neither of us would admit it…

We had crossed a line.
