"I LOVE YOU."
I tell Dominik the undeniable truth, over and over. But it's too late. My tears fall onto his thick, soft fur. I clutch at his unmoving form, fingers sinking into the dense pelt as if by holding tighter, I can will him to keep going. But then his body goes still. Too still.
A cry tears from my throat, raw and desperate. Sobs begin to wrack my body.
This can't be happening. I can't lose Dominik. I just can't. I should do something. Anything. But all I can seem to do is stay here, frozen with shock, as tears cascade down my face. My vision is so blurry it takes me a moment to realize something is happening. Something important. Something good. A miracle.
Dominik is shifting.
His body reshapes. Fur recedes to human skin. In less than thirty seconds, instead of an enormous black wolf in my lap, it's the familiar face of the man I love.
His eyes are still closed. But his body isn't completely still anymore. He's breathing.
He's alive.
