Luke whirled around, but he was too slow. Eve was already on it, a grin lighting her face. She charged forward, whipping the hammer around her head and bringing it down.
The massive beast lurched to the side, but part of it was still caught in the attack. Its forearm was ripped off by the force, and it howled.
Evelyn didn't care how big it was, she was just enjoying the power. She hated not being able to crush things, and the satisfying feeling of flesh giving and bone cracking under her blows made her grin widen.
Eve turned and flung the hammer out behind her, pivoting on one foot and slamming the wedge of metal into the creature's side. It wasn't human anymore, so no one could protest, right?
It let out a keening howl as it toppled, the last sound it would ever make. Eve slammed her foot down on its head, then turned back around. Settling the hammer on her shoulder, she raised her wrist to her mouth and gave it a small lick.
The blood was still human enough.
She grinned.
She hadn't tasted new blood for so long. It wasn't socially appropriate to ask someone else if she could lick their blood, so she only got it from Luke and herself, and there had been no time to stop earlier, because she had to get to Luke and ensure his safety, though she doubted he needed it.
Luke smirked at her, and she returned it.
Evelyn knew that he had a plan. He always did. And as long as that plan involved her getting to kill things, she was absolutely willing to be a part of it.
"Check its corpse for anything useful," Luke commanded her, and Eve immediately crouched and ripped it open. Starting from the counter, she methodically pulled out its innards, ripping open its stomach, intestine, and lungs, which were the major systems to have space inside them. Nothing.
Then she turned to the head.
The arms and legs weren't likely to have anything, but she would check them later just to make sure, if she didn't find anything here.
After tearing the skin off, she picked apart the shattered skull, tossing the pieces aside. And sure enough, just as Luke had thought, there was a crystal.
The color was a dark blue-green, and for some reason, it was refined, not rough, like someone had cut it deliberately. It was sort of elongated, like a diamond shape (the four-sided one) that was stretched out until it was almost twice as long as it was wide, and was about the length of Eve's outstretched hand if she put her fingers together. She checked.
Eve stood up and handed it to Luke, brushing off most of the brain bits before she did.
"That's disgusting," the tall boy said from behind Luke.
Eve frowned at him.
"Who even are you anyway?" she asked with a scoff. "Do you know what this means?"
"Michael," he responded, crossing his arms.
Eve scowled. She didn't care what his name was, she just wanted to know why Luke had grabbed him.
Luke raised a hand between them, and Eve's eyes locked onto it, the fire in her stomach dimming instantly
"I chose him, so you'll play nice. As far as we know, he might not be useless," Luke said sternly. Eve nodded. If that was his choice, she would abide by it anyway. He knew that. Michael wasn't in danger until Luke stopped wanting him.
"Besides, everyone else in that class was an idiot," he continued, turning to look around the courtyard.
Eve nodded absently, following his gaze closely. Unfortunately, she didn't see any more of the large monsters. And there was blood everywhere, too. Someone else had come this way.
And they had been... neat.
Eve hated neat people. They were always hiding something.
Each of the creatures had their heads cut off, and rarely anything else. There was minimal blood.
But just as Eve walked over and raised her hammer to smash one of the corpses to pieces, intending to have a little fun as well as seeing if she could recover another crystal from it, Luke called her.
She immediately dropped her hammer headfirst to the ground and rushed over, dragging it along behind her.
Luke was staring at two people standing right outside the chain fence.
