Three years and four months had passed.
Ren had made a list during his year. It was a list of every sect disciple who had been around for more than two years without getting past the entry stage.
He did this to get a sense of the landscape.
The list had twenty-three names on it.
Now he looked at it again with eyes.
Huo Fen was twenty-nine years old.
He had been in the sect for seven years.
He worked at the storage yard three mornings a week handing out things to people.
He always ate at the table by himself unless someone sat near him by mistake.
If that happened he would move one seat over without saying anything.
Ren had talked to him before.
Both times it was about storage and how to get things.
Huo Fen answered with words and then looked away until the conversation was over.
Huo Fen had tried to get to the Foundation Establishment stage when he was twenty-two.
He failed and got a Cracked Foundation.
This means he cannot get past that stage.
The road to getting better is closed for him.
Ren found this out six months ago when he was looking through some records.
It was not hidden,. Nobody really looks at those records unless they are doing what Ren was doing.
Huo Fen is still in the sect because he has nowhere else to go.
Ren thought about this for a moment.
He said to himself "Seven years. He is still stuck."
He looked at Huo Fen from across the courtyard.
Huo Fen was counting some papers really focused on what he was doing.
He was not. Distracted, just doing his job because that is all he could do.
Ren watched him for a minute.
This is what happens when you try to get to the Foundation Establishment stage and fail.
It is not the moment when you fail that is the problem.
It is the years that come after.
It is not exciting or visible.
It is a person doing a simple job with a door closed behind them that they cannot open.
Ren wrote this down in his notebook.
He did not write it as a warning. As a fact.
He wrote, "Failing at the Foundation Establishment stage is not about trying and failing.
It is about the decades that come after when you cannot get better."
Then he went back to his training.
Sous assistant was a woman named Maran.
She was forty-one years old. Had been in the outer sect since she was nineteen.
She had never tried to get to the Foundation Establishment stage.
Ren thought that maybe she had seen someone else fail and decided it was not worth the risk.
If she tried and failed she would be stuck like Huo Fen.
If she never tried she could always think that maybe someday she would be ready.
Ren understood why she thought this way.
A road that might still be open is better than a road that is closed.
He also knew what this thinking produces.
Twenty-two years of waiting and doing jobs waiting for a step she could not take.
Ren thought, "Being afraid of what might happen can produce the result as failing but it takes longer."
He wrote in his notebook "To get to the Foundation Establishment stage you need to be sure you are prepared not sure you will succeed.
You cannot be sure you will succeed so you have to try even if it's risky."
He read this twice. Then went back to work.
The third person on his list was different.
His name was Corryn. He was twenty-four years old.
He had tried to get to the Foundation Establishment stage and failed both times.
He got a Weak Foundation, which means he can still get better. It will be harder.
He will hit walls at every stage that people with a Perfect Foundation do not hit.
His ceiling is lower. It will stay lower.
Corryn was still training,. He was different now.
He was not broken,. He was not excited about getting better like he used to be.
He was just doing his job building towards a goal with the same effort.
Ren watched him from across the training hall.
He thought, "This is more honest than what Maran's doing but it is harder."
He did not feel better about either of them.
He wrote both cases in his notebook. Then wrote a third thing: the outer sect is full of people like this.
Some. Failed some tried and got a Weak Foundation and some never tried at all.
The Foundation Establishment stage is the important moment in a cultivators life.
The grade you get is permanent.
If you get a Cracked Foundation you are stuck.
Every grade below Perfect is a ceiling that you cannot get past.
Ren was going to get a Perfect Foundation on all five paths at the time or he would not try at all.
That was the way he could accept.
He closed his notebook. Picked the next question.
Lirien was in the library that afternoon.
She was reading a book about alchemy and taking notes.
Ren was in the corner working on a formation.
He noticed she was there. He kept working.
She finished her chapter. Closed the book.
She was about to leave when she stopped near Ren.
He looked up at her.
She stood there like she had made a decision and was already doing it.
"You are not at the Body Tempering Layer Two stage " she said.
It was not an accusation or a question, a statement.
Ren looked at her. Said, "What makes you think that?"
She looked at him like she was filing away information not answering his question.
She left without saying anything
Ren watched her go.
He thought, "She has a Soul Path perception and she can see through my disguise."
He opened her notebook entry. Added some notes.
He wrote, "She can see through my stage discrepancy just like I can see through hers."
He closed the notebook. Went back to work.
The boring layer was still intact.
It had been three and a half years since he started it.
Two people in the compound could see through it. They had not said anything to anyone else.
Ren filed this away. Went back to his Foundation file.
Wei Shan was in his corner that Thursday.
He had a bottle and an old book open.
He looked up when Ren sat down.
"You have been looking at the archive records " Wei Shan said.
It was not a question.
Ren said, "Yes I have been looking at the advancement records."
Wei Shan looked back at his book. Turned a page.
"Twenty-three names on your list " he said.
Ren looked at him. Said, "I have been in this compound for three years and I made a list of people who have been stuck for more than two years."
Wei Shan said, "I have been here for nine years and I have my list. It is longer than twenty-three."
He. Then said, "What do you do with your list?"
Ren said, "I just keep it as a record."
Wei Shan said, "I do nothing with mine. It is a record, not a project."
He turned another page. Said, "Huo Fen tried to get to the Foundation Establishment stage when he was twenty-two. He was ready, by every standard. He still got a Cracked Foundation."
Ren said, "Yes and that is the problem."
Wei Shan said, "The problem is not that he failed but that the outer sect teaches the standard. The Foundation formation reads what you are, not what you have prepared to show it."
He closed the book. Said, "The formation reads your true self, not what you think you are."
Ren sat with this for a moment thinking about what Wei Shan had said.
The preparation has to build the thing he said. Not the appearance of the thing.
Yes Wei Shan said.
He picked up the bottle drank and set it down.
Thirty-eight questions Ren said.
Are any of them about what you're rather than what you have prepared Wei Shan said.
Ren considered this carefully.
One he said. Maybe two.
Then you are ahead of people who sit here Wei Shan said.
That was the end of the conversation.
Ren sat for a while longer then went back to his session.
The eleventh formation stone absorbed in its different way as it always did.

Darius had a thought about Corryn.
He mentioned it over the communal hall meal three days after Ren had completed his list review.
Corryn is applying to transfer to a branch compound Darius said. Eastern Azurefall, posting, lower expectations and lower resource competition.
Ren considered this.
He got the Weak Foundation result and is adjusting the environment to match the ceiling Ren said.
That is one way to read it Darius said. The other way is that a smaller compound with competition gives him more room to develop toward the ceiling he has. Weak Foundation is still a ceiling that most people never reach. He is not wrong to build toward it
Ren looked at him.
Darius had the quartz piece out turning it thinking.
The Kell House has a branch office near that compound Darius said. Good herb market, formation stone supply chain my fathers network covers three of the five major trading routes through the area.
You are thinking about whether a Weak Foundation cultivator with good session discipline could become a long-term contact Ren said.
I am thinking about the value of people who have accepted what they have and are building seriously toward it Darius said. People who have made peace with their ceiling tend to be more reliable than people who're still angry about it.
Ren thought about this.
It was not wrong Ren thought. Corryns adjustment was visible from the outside as a diminishment. From the inside it was probably a thing entirely. A recalibration that had cost something and was producing something. A person building carefully toward a ceiling rather than pretending a higher one was still accessible.
I will keep track of him Ren said.
I already have his transfer date Darius said. He put the quartz away.
The meal continued.
Ren thought about the list of twenty-three names, the ones, the Weak ones, the ones who had never attempted. All of them present in this compound all of them doing the work that was available to them within the constraints they had been given.
Ren was going to attempt Foundation Establishment in under two years.
Ren was going to receive Perfect Foundation on all five paths.
Ren was not thinking about this the way a person thought about victory Ren was thinking about it the way a person thought about a preparation they had made with genuine care and were still checking.
The result was not guaranteed it was aimed at.
Ren went back to his session.

Ren checked the stone that evening a periodic check he did this every two months approximately at whatever cultivation stage Ren had most recently reached. Each time Ren learned more each time the picture remained incomplete.
Tonight the Soul Path was at its depth the depth produced by four years of five-path simultaneous cultivation rather than the depth the stone had been calibrated for if it had been calibrated for a specific depth.
Ren held the reading for three minutes.
The stone was absorbing more from the Soul Path frequency range than standard as always consistently and always in the same direction.
At tonights Soul Path depth Ren could read something Ren had not been able to read before.
The absorption was not passive the stone was not simply collecting what passed through it the absorption had a directionality the Soul Path frequencies were being drawn inward along a gradient rather than being absorbed uniformly.
Something inside the stone was reading what it absorbed, not just recording, reading.
Ren held this observation for a time.
Then Ren wrote in the mystery file: Mystery A. Observation at current Soul Path depth the eleventh stone is not a passive recorder the absorption has directionality the Soul Path frequencies are being drawn along a specific internal gradient something inside the stone is reading what it absorbs.
Ren paused.
Then added: the stone is currently reading Ren.
Ren looked at the stone sitting in the corner of the secondary hall, where it had been, for eight years before Ren arrived absorbing in its slightly different way.
Ren closed the mystery file.
Ren went to sleep.
