The pulse was small — barely detectable at ambient read depth — but it propagated through the chamber's formation substrate and reflected from anything in the substrate that had a specific resonance character.
The pulse reflected from the northeastern substrate section's third formation tier.
He ran the Aether Echo Script's passive read on the northeastern substrate at the reflection point's coordinates.
A passive recording medium. Embedded in the third formation tier, at a depth the AES could not have reached from the outer layer or middle layer at approach-quality ambient depth, but accessible from inside the chamber in twenty-times exterior compression with the Still Center running at its maximum extended range.

The thirteen signatures he had counted were not simply thirteen different cultivators. Some were the same cultivator at different development stages, recorded across multiple visits.
He recounted.
Twelve distinct individuals. Some with multiple entries. Havel Ran among them, with two entries across two Hollow openings. The cultivator twenty-three years ago with one entry and no Foundation completion.
Ren was the fourteenth distinct Five-Root cultivator to enter this chamber in eight hundred years.

Between the scheduled sessions, he tracked the other cultivators.

The fifth and sixth were independents.
The sixth was the most interesting.
Core Formation Peak — the inner layer's ceiling was supposed to suppress everything above Core Formation Peak to Core Formation Peak level, but he read a slight elevation in her ambient output that suggested she was running something above the ceiling and the suppression layer was not quite catching it. Not a significant violation. A few percent above ceiling. She was not Core Formation Peak. She was at least Nascent Soul.
She had entered the Hollow under the Hollow's published entry restrictions. If she was Nascent Soul, she was running a cultivation concealment method to present as Core Formation Peak.
He had a boring layer. He understood cultivation concealment methods and the choices that led to using them.
He observed her from a distance and made no contact.
At the exit window's final hours, she was at the inner layer threshold when he crossed back into the middle layer. She looked at him with the direct assessment of someone who had identified something interesting in a cultivation environment and was acknowledging, briefly, that she had noticed.
He acknowledged this with a nod and continued to the exit.
He filed her under: possible Fivefold Compact monitor. Or: possible institutional actor watching the Hollow for Five-Root activity. Or: independent Core Formation cultivator with an unusually effective concealment method. Three distinct possibilities. None confirmable from this position.
He added her to the post-Foundation investigation queue.

"The resonance stone," she said.

"The passive recording layer." She looked at the marker's fourth face. "The surface layers are accessible to a pre-Foundation Five-Root ambient depth in this environment."
"Yes."
"Twelve signatures in the surface layer accessible range."
He looked at her. "You read it."
"I read the surface layer on day three," she said. "I could not read the deeper encoding layers. The surface layers are accessible to a formation-literate Foundation Establishment Late at this depth." She looked at the marker. "Twelve distinct individuals. Havel Ran among them. A cultivator twenty-three years ago with one entry and no completion record."
She had been working the resonance stone in parallel. The surface layers she could read, he could read. The deeper layers only he could access.
"The thirteenth signature," he said.
"The twenty-three-year-ago entry," she confirmed. "I have been looking for records of that cultivator for three years. The Compact's operational records for the period have a gap — a two-year gap in the monitoring account's documentation that corresponds to a period of significant administrative restructuring in the Compact's affiliated compound network." She paused. "Whatever happened to the thirteenth cultivator, it disrupted the Compact's infrastructure significantly enough to require two years of administrative recovery."
This was information he did not have.
"You have access to the Compact's operational records," he said.
"Partial access. Through institutional research networks that overlap with the Compact's archive holdings at several points." A pause. "The Compact does not know I have what I have. They know someone has been researching the sect's formation legacy for four years. They do not know how much I have found."
He thought about what this meant.
Tae Riel had four years of research that the Compact had not been able to neutralize because they did not fully know what she knew. She had partial access to the Compact's operational records through an avenue the Compact had not identified. And she had approached him in the Hollow — approached a cultivator she had identified as the Compact's next monitored cultivator — without the Compact's authorization or knowledge.
She was not affiliated with the Compact.
She was investigating the Compact as an institution, alongside investigating the Clearwater Sect's formation legacy.
"The deeper encoding layers in the resonance stone," he said. "After the Foundation. The inner sect archive access. The Compact's full institutional account."
"Yes," she said.
"The partnership terms," he said. "Your research access and your Clearwater Sect field documentation against my Foundation-stage ambient read depth and my inner sect archive access. Equal contribution, equal information."
"Agreed," she said immediately. She had been ready for this offer since the first session.
He wrote the terms in the interior mapping notebook, signed his name, and handed it to her.
She read it, signed below his name, and handed it back.
He looked at the signed notation.
The ink was dry in thirty seconds.
"Day twelve," she said. "Two days until the exit window. What do you need from the resonance stone that you haven't gotten yet?"
"The sealed formation in the inner chamber's northeastern substrate," he said. "Separate from the passive recording stone. A sealed archival formation in the third formation tier. I read the sealing notation but haven't determined the activation criterion yet."
She was still.
"Sealed at construction time?" she asked.
"Sealed at construction time. The Clearwater Sect's original formation notation. Eight hundred years sealed." He looked at the marker. "I need the activation criterion. The sealing notation's grammar is in the marker's third face."
She stood and walked to the marker's third face.
She ran her cultivation sense read on the inscription for four minutes.
"The activation criterion is a cultivation key," she said. "A specific resonance output pattern sustained for a defined period." She traced a notation element with her finger, not touching the surface. "The key signature requires a Five-Root cultivation structure at Foundation Establishment stage. Not approach. Established."
He looked at the third face.
"It opens after the Foundation," he said.
"After the Foundation," she confirmed.
He added it to the post-Foundation task list.
Day one inside the Hollow's secondary entry, when the formation research division's internal access protocol became available to him.
"Two days," she said. She returned to the northern quadrant.
He sat at the calibration marker and wrote the sealed formation's activation criterion in the interior mapping notebook with the specific notation grammar detail that would allow him to reproduce the key signature from the correct cultivation depth.
He closed the notebook.
He ran the final Seed of Still Current session of the interior period — the last full cultivation development session he would run inside the Hollow before the exit day. One hour in twelve-times exterior compression, the frequency-aligned intake cycling drawing at peak efficiency, the Still Current running at its best performance in forty-seven months of daily practice.
He let the session run without tracking it.
He was going to miss this.

She ran a cultivation sense read on the dimensional boundary — the same direct formation engagement she had applied to every formation surface she encountered in the Hollow's interior. Then she looked at him with the particular directness of someone making a final assessment before a context shift.
"I will file the Thornwall Interior's research notes with the inner sect archive's external submission office," she said. "Three months of interior observation work. Two hundred pages of Clearwater notation analysis." A pause. "If the external acquisition program acquires them without notification, the research partnership agreement we signed at the calibration marker will be the attribution record."
She had been planning for the possibility of unauthorized acquisition.
"The partnership agreement is signed and dated," he said. "The interior mapping notebook is the record."
She nodded — not the complete nod he used for full receipt, but the nod of someone who had been working alone for four years and was still deciding how much to trust the change.
"One thing you should know before the exit," she said. "The institutional monitoring account. The one in your compound's administrative record."
He was still.
"I identified it two years ago," she said. "Through the administrative archive overlap with the Compact's records I mentioned. The monitoring account at the Blackspire compound has been maintained by the same administrator for nine years. A Wei Shan — outer sect cultivation stage, stagnated, long-tenure." She looked at the dimensional boundary. "He is the Compact's compound monitor. He is also the person who has been evaluating his own monitoring account's flagged events. Every unclassified anomaly the monitoring account has produced in nine years has been reviewed and cleared by the same person who created it."
He held her gaze.
"How long have you known this," he said.
"Two years," she said. "I did not mention it earlier because we did not have a partnership earlier." She held his gaze steadily. "The Compact's monitoring structure is designed to protect what it monitors. I believe Wei Shan is protecting you. I also believe you did not fully know the mechanism by which the protection operated."
"I knew he was the Compact's monitor," he said. "I did not know he was evaluating his own flagged events."
"Now you know," she said.
The gate's closing window arrived. The dimensional boundary shifted from its active state to its dematerializing state. He watched three seconds of the dematerialization and thought about information channels and what had been visible from different positions across the same time period.
He stepped through.
The exterior ambient registered as thin after fourteen days of progressively higher compression.
He adjusted his boring layer's calibration to account for the exterior decompression period. Six hours. The Still Current's internal density would slowly equilibrate toward the exterior ambient's lower density level.
He put on the kit bag and began walking.
