Chapter 45 - Root Preparation

The integration stage required six hours.

He had read the botanical text's description of the integration stage seventeen times across four and a half years of preparation. He had run the Ancient Shadow Water Internal Scripture's Qi-output calibration function for eight months specifically to prepare for it. He had studied the rhythm-matching problem from every angle the botanical text and the Clearwater Sect's formation documentation provided.

None of this was the same as doing it.

The integration stage began at the second hour of the morning — the hour when the secondary hall was most fully his, when the compound's ambient noise was at its quietest, when the monitoring systems' scan cycles were at their longest intervals. He had calculated this window in the Foundation file and confirmed it two weeks before the Hollow departure.

He opened the inner ring's formation-isolated jade surface and began.

The infusion process required directing a sustained five-path Qi output into the root's five-strand structure through the inner ring's formation environment. Not a raw output — a calibrated one, the infusion rate precisely matched to the root's natural absorption rhythm. Too fast disrupted the synchronized absorption pattern the root's five strands had developed in the Hollow's inner chamber. Too slow prevented the infusion from penetrating to full strand depth.

The root's synchronized rhythm was not a beat. It was a complex five-part pattern — each strand absorbing in its own rhythm, all five rhythms interlocked in a way that produced a coherent synchronized frequency at the macro level but required tracking all five individual rhythms at the micro level to match the infusion rate correctly.

He ran the Ancient Shadow Water Scripture's calibration function.

The Ancient Shadow Water Scripture was an Earth Grade technique, realm range one through three, with a primary cultivation function and a secondary Qi-output calibration stage that increased precision in ambient Qi output direction and rate. He had been running the calibration stage for eight months and had achieved a level of output precision that the technique's standard documentation did not describe as achievable below Foundation Establishment.

He had achieved it by running the calibration stage every morning for eight months.

The calibration function applied to the infusion process: his Qi output followed the root's five-strand rhythms through the inner ring's formation environment, accelerating and decelerating in the microsecond windows the rhythm required, the infusion rate matching the absorption pattern without averaging it into a continuous flow.

He held this for six hours.

At the six-hour mark, the root's five-strand structure had absorbed the infusion to full depth.

He ran the Aether Echo Script's confirmation read.

Integration depth: consistent across all five strands. Synchronized rhythm: maintained, not disrupted by the infusion process. Peak preparation grade: confirmed through the infusion phase.

He went to sleep at the ninth hour.

Day three was the Mira Dawnfeld exchange.

He had not planned for the exchange to coincide with the preparation period. The standing arrangement specified the thirty-first day of each month cycle — a fixed date that had coincided with the preparation period by the calendar rather than by design. He had considered postponing it. The secondary meeting room, the assessment process, the network information — all of it created a three-hour window of activity that was not optimal during a preparation protocol.

He had decided against postponing.

Postponing would flag the arrangement as disrupted. Dawnfeld had not been informed of the Hollow trip, the preparation, or the attempt. From her perspective, the arrangement continued on its fixed schedule. A postponement would require an explanation, and the explanation would require information he was not prepared to share before the attempt result was established.

He produced the batch in three sessions on days one and two of the preparation period, using the residential room's secondary formation stone arrangement rather than the northeast corner's primary platform. The sessions ran correctly at the formation method's established parameters.

The batch quality was noticeably above the previous exchange's standard.

Not from any deliberate improvement. The Hollow's interior development had advanced his cultivation base by the equivalent of eight months of exterior work, and the compression-density formation method — the Ancient Metal Star Shadow Internal Scripture's secondary application, an Earth Grade technique he had identified the application for in year two — produced higher output quality from a higher cultivation base when all other parameters were held constant.

He packaged the twelve units in the standard presentation containers.

Dawnfeld arrived at the third hour of the morning, visitor reception point, exactly as the standing arrangement specified.

She set her assessment kit on the table and worked through all twelve units without speaking. He waited. Darius waited.

At the fifth unit her pace changed — the rhythm shift of someone confirming a hypothesis rather than developing one. She continued through the remaining seven with concentrated attention before setting down the secondary instrument.

"The internal structure is consistent with the previous batch," she said. "The mechanism is unchanged."

"Yes."

"But the output quality has improved." She looked at the twelve units. "You said the last exchange was the final one at current terms."

"This is the final exchange at current terms," he said. "The next exchange will be at terms reflecting the third refinement's development trajectory and the cultivation base change that is currently completing."

She processed this. "Your cousin — Tae Riel," he said.

Dawnfeld was still.

"She approached me in the Hollow," he said. "We discussed your standing arrangement in the context of her identifying my formation output signature from the information you had provided her." He met her gaze. "I am aware of the network connection."

A pause.

"Tae Riel has been conducting independent formation research for four years," Dawnfeld said carefully. "Some of that research has been supported through the family's commercial network. She pursues her own research priorities. I do not direct them." Another pause. "She mentioned meeting a cultivator in the Hollow whose output profile matched a supplier description I had shared with her in a research context. I did not know she would approach you directly."

"She approached me because she had four years of independent research value to offer," he said. "The approach was professional. The partnership terms we established are separate from the standing arrangement between us."

"Separate," she confirmed.

"The renegotiation," he said. "The next exchange terms will include the post-Foundation operational position's production capacity and the research partnership's information value as negotiating points. I suggest we schedule the renegotiation for fifteen days from today."

Fifteen days: five days after the projected attempt completion and inner sect certification.

Dawnfeld looked at the twelve units and then looked at him with the commercial precision she applied to information about timing.

"Fifteen days," she said.

"Yes."

She processed the payment, packed the units, and looked at him at the door.

"Kira Sol," she said. "She has been aware of the production trajectory since the second exchange. She has been waiting for the appropriate institutional moment to make contact."

He filed this.

"Fifteen days," he said.

She left.

Day four: the final preparation stage and the preparation seal.

He ran the botanical text's thirty-minute final confirmation protocol in the morning. The combined read: Aether Echo Script, Primordial Star Frost Scripture environment-reading function, and the unnamed combined Soul-Energy method. Three methods applied simultaneously to the root's ambient signature from the inner ring's central position.

All three methods produced the same result.

Five-strand structure intact. Synchronized absorption rhythm maintained through two days of active preparation. Integration depth consistent across all five strands. Peak preparation grade confirmed at the final preparation stage.

He sealed the root in the attempt formation.

Three stones in a triangular configuration at the northeast corner's edge, the specific arrangement documented in the Foundation file's attempt preparation section. The attempt formation maintained the root's synchronized rhythm in a stable ambient environment through the indefinite period between the preparation seal and the attempt initiation.

The botanical text specified: attempt initiation within forty-eight hours of preparation seal.

He had planned for the evening session window — the hour he always used for secondary hall cultivation sessions, the hour that would make the attempt invisible from the compound's standard behavioral monitoring.

He confirmed the attempt timing with Wei Shan.

Wei Shan looked at the attempt formation and the eleven formation stones in their calibration positions and the kit bag at the corner's edge and said: "Tomorrow evening."

"Tomorrow evening," Ren confirmed.

"I will have the anomaly log entry ready to file within the hour of completion," Wei Shan said. "The entry format is consistent with the three previous anomaly entries I have filed for this corner across four years. It will classify the event as an unclassified ambient disturbance with formation environment correlation — no cultivation stage indicator, no recommendation for administrative review."

"And Shen Yue."

"She contacted me this morning." He looked at the dark-covered text. "Her certification packet is complete. She has reviewed the outer sect's Foundation certification procedure at the administrative processing level and has verified that the packet will enter the processing queue within ninety minutes of my anomaly log entry."

Ninety minutes from completion to certification filing.

Six hours from certification filing to Keller's flag response.

Forty hours of Shen Yue's management covering the thirty-two-hour administration window that remained.

All three components confirmed.

"The post-Foundation task list," he said. "Eighteen items."

"I know some of what is on it," Wei Shan said. "Not all."

"Mystery B is substantially resolved," Ren said. "Mystery D is substantially resolved. Mystery A and C require the archive." He looked at Wei Shan. "Mystery E — the northeastern Greenwood formation. The design intent read I performed on the walk back from the Hollow."

"What did it tell you."

"The formation is waiting for a Five-Root cultivator at Foundation Establishment stage," he said. "It tried to activate during the decompression period — not successfully, because I was at approach quality, not Established. After the attempt, the first visit will be different."

Wei Shan was quiet for a moment. "Kael Vorin documented the northeastern Greenwood formation in his records," he said. "It is junction node seventeen of the Clearwater Sect's formation network. The formation research division has been investigating it for eleven years without being able to read the annotation layer."

"I know," he said. "Kira Sol's program has been reviewing my formation maintenance duty logs quarterly for three years. She identified that I was observing something they had not found."

Wei Shan processed this.

"She is waiting for the inner sect transition to approach you formally," he said.

"Yes. I will approach her first."

A pause. "That is the correct sequence," Wei Shan said.

Ren looked at the attempt formation.

The root in its stable ambient, the synchronized rhythm maintained, the preparation complete.

"Tomorrow evening," he said.

"Tomorrow evening," Wei Shan agreed.

He went to sleep.

— ◆ —

He spent the afternoon completing the administrative closure of the northern boundary rotation.

The twelve-day rotation log was complete. Darius had maintained it across the full Hollow interior period with the specific accuracy that made the documentation indistinguishable from real work. The log's final entries covered the last three days — the days following the return from the Hollow — in the same careful format as the preceding eleven.

He signed the completion notice and left it in the administrative distribution queue.

Then he went to the library.

Not for research. For a specific text in the restricted holdings section.

The Primordial Star Frost Internal Scripture's advanced theory volume — the text Shen Yue had been reading for two months, the text she had left on the secondary table as information rather than a casual loan. He had read the advanced theory section three weeks ago. He wanted to re-read the cultivation monitoring section in light of what the Hollow period had confirmed.

The section described the post-Foundation cultivation monitoring approach for Five-Root Foundation structures. The approach he had already developed independently through the post-Hollow decompression period's extended read depth. But the text described three monitoring functions — he had independently developed the first two and not found the third.

The third function: a Soul Path projection technique that used the five-path Foundation architecture's integration point as a resonance reference to read the ambient Qi character of a formation environment at significantly greater depth than the standard ambient read methods produced.

He had the integration point.

After the Foundation was established, the integration point would be accessible as a read reference.

He read the projection technique's description twice.

This was what had been built into the Foundation architecture's design — not just a cultivation base, but a set of read functions that only became accessible from the Foundation's specific structural properties. The Clearwater Sect had designed the inner chamber's formation environment to give Five-Root cultivators their first experience of these functions in the balanced five-element ambient. He had stood in that chamber and felt the five-directional extension as a new thing. The advanced theory text was telling him it was not a new thing at all — it was a foundational function of Five-Root Foundation architecture that had been waiting for the Foundation to exist.

He closed the text.

He returned it to the restricted holdings shelf.

He walked back to the secondary hall in the late afternoon and sat in the northeast corner.

He ran the Grand Void Wood Internal Scripture's suppression-interface diagnostic on the boring layer's current calibration range.

The Grand Void Wood Scripture — an Earth Grade technique, realm range one through five — had a secondary function: a systematic diagnostic method for evaluating suppression formation effectiveness against the current cultivation base's output level. He had been running the diagnostic on the boring layer every six months across four and a half years. The most recent diagnostic, three weeks before the Hollow, had confirmed the boring layer's calibration was adequate for approach-quality output at Foundation stage attempt conditions.

Tomorrow's attempt would produce post-Foundation output levels.

The post-Foundation output would exceed what the diagnostic had confirmed as adequate.

He ran the full diagnostic now, with the attempt's projected output specifications as the reference point.

The boring layer's current calibration would hold for approximately eight weeks after the Foundation was established before measurable degradation began. Eight weeks was more than sufficient for the immediate post-Foundation period. The inner sect transition, the certification processing, the first administrative tasks — all within eight weeks.

The Abyssal Mist Ice Water Internal Scripture's deep maintenance protocol would expand the calibration range for the longer term. He had planned to run the protocol three weeks after the Foundation — the structure would need two to three weeks to stabilize after the attempt before the deep maintenance protocol could engage effectively.

He noted this in the Foundation file's post-attempt sequence section.

Then he set the file down.

He looked at the northeast corner. The eleven formation stones in their calibration positions, the attempt formation beside them, the preparation platform already broken down and the stones returned to their storage configuration. The kit bag at the corner's edge. The compound notebook on the secondary table.

Everything exactly as it had been for four and a half years.

Tomorrow evening it would not be the same.

He accepted this and went to eat his evening meal.

At the ninth hour he returned to the secondary hall and ran the Primordial Star Frost Scripture's final pre-attempt evening cycle. The sixty-minute stabilization sequence. Five paths in natural synchronization at their 0.74 baseline.

He held the synchronization state for twenty minutes in post-session awareness.

Wei Shan was in his corner. Reading the dark-covered text by lamplight, as he had been reading it for nine years.

"Are you ready?" Wei Shan said without looking up.

It was the first time in four and a half years he had asked a direct question about the preparation's state.

Ren thought about the Foundation file's seven hundred and forty-nine entries. The eight cessation tests and their confirmed results. The 0.74 synchronization baseline. The completed root preparation and the sealed attempt formation. The boring layer's eight-week post-attempt margin. The Hollow's fourteen interior days of cultivation development. The eighteen items on the post-Foundation task list.

"Yes," he said.

Wei Shan turned a page.

"Then tomorrow will be straightforward," he said.
