Chapter 47 - The Attempt, First Hours

The five formation locks were not independent.

He had known this in theory — the cessation test program's eighth session had produced the specific formation-lock interaction data that confirmed the five-path simultaneous attempt's central challenge. He had built the synchronization frequency toward the threshold that would make the interaction manageable. He had run the root preparation to provide an external reference anchor for the interaction's calibration phase.

He had understood all of this correctly.

He had underestimated the weight of it.

The five formation locks, once engaged, each began completing — the cultivation structure's transformation process running inside each path simultaneously. The transformation process produced a resonance output from each completing lock that propagated outward through the cultivation framework. Every other lock had to accommodate that propagating resonance in real time, adjusting its own transformation process to account for the change.

One lock: one transformation, zero accommodation events.

Five simultaneous locks: five transformations, each generating resonance propagation that the other four had to accommodate simultaneously. The interaction scaled with a combinatorial complexity that addition did not capture.

He held all five.

The Energy Path's lock was most advanced — forty-seven months of the Seed of Still Current had built the Energy Path to the highest internal density of the five paths, and the lock's transformation was accelerating at the rate the density supported. Its resonance propagation was the strongest of the five. The other four locks were calibrating against it continuously.

The Body Path's lock ran second. The Overlord Evolution Physique had been reinforcing the Body Path's structural foundation across four and a half years of passive development — the bone and meridian wall density that the physique produced translated directly into the transformation rate. The Body Path's lock was completing at nearly the Energy Path's speed.

The Soul Path's lock was the most sensitive. Not the fastest, not the most powerful — the most sensitive to the other paths' resonance propagations. The Still Center's ambient contact function extended through the cultivation framework in all directions, which meant the Soul Path's lock was receiving resonance input from all four other locks through the cultivation sense channels as well as through the cultivation framework itself. Double-input. He had not fully anticipated this in the Foundation file's projections.

He noted it and did not stop to process it. File it. Investigate later.

The Bloodline Path's lock: quieter than the others. The Devouring Core's four-simultaneous-resonance configuration contributed an absorption-weight to the lock's transformation rather than a driving force. The Bloodline Path's lock was not accelerating toward completion — it was being drawn toward completion by the other four paths' combined resonance pressure.

The Law Path's lock: the thread. Nearly nothing by the standard of the other four. But in the five-path integrated framework, even a thread contributed a variable that every surrounding lock had to accommodate. The Law Path's presence in the accommodation calculation was not proportional to its output strength.

He held all five simultaneously and felt the weight of holding them.

— ◆ —

At the fourth hour, the accommodation phase began.

The formation locks had reached the stage at which each lock's transformation was producing significant resonance propagation. Significant meant: strong enough that passive accommodation was no longer sufficient. The other locks could not simply adjust around the propagating resonance. They had to actively respond to it.

Active accommodation was the phase that the Foundation file had identified as the attempt's peak demand period. Not because the cultivation work was at its most intense in absolute terms, but because the active accommodation required all five locks to simultaneously manage both their own transformation and their response to four other locks' transformations.

The Energy Path's lock was completing.

He felt it approaching completion the way he could feel the end of a long exhalation — not sudden, but present in the quality of what remained. The lock's transformation was in its final stage. The resonance propagation it produced was peaking before the completion.

The peak resonance from the Energy Path's lock hit the Soul Path's lock at the fourth-hour-and-twelve-minute mark.

The Soul Path's lock experienced the peak resonance as an accommodation demand significantly above what the cessation test program's eighth session had specified as the expected maximum. Not because the fundamental parameters had changed — the synchronization frequency was still 0.74, the still current's density was within projection, the other paths' contribution weights were within specification. Because the Hollow's fourteen interior days had advanced the Still Current's development beyond the projection the Foundation file had contained.

He had built more than he projected. The Energy Path's lock's peak resonance reflected that additional development.

The accommodation demand was beyond the Foundation file's specified maximum.

He held the Soul Path's lock through the accommodation demand without releasing any of the three core threads.

The accommodation took eleven seconds. Eleven seconds of holding the peak demand against the Soul Path's lock while simultaneously holding the other four locks at their respective stages and maintaining the boring layer's high-output calibration.

The demand passed.

He was still holding everything.

He filed: cessation test program's eighth session underestimated peak accommodation demand by approximately twelve percent. Consistent with Hollow period's development overage. The margin in the broader preparation absorbed the underestimation without structural risk.

— ◆ —

The sixth hour brought the accommodation phase's deepest passage.

Not the peak accommodation demand — that had passed at the four-hour mark. The deepest passage was something different: the period after the peak accommodation when the five locks had been in active interaction for six hours and his attentional reserves had been running at maximum engagement for six consecutive hours.

The attentional reserves were not depleted. The cessation test program had built them specifically for sustained high-engagement periods. But sustained high engagement for six hours produced a quality of mental texture that was different from the first hour's texture in ways the cultivation theory texts he had read had not described with useful precision.

He had described it once in a margin note: the eighth test's second hour feels different from the eighth test's first hour in the way that the forty-third kilometer of a long walk feels different from the first. Not harder — different. The work is the same. You are not quite the same as you were when it started.

At the sixth hour he was not quite the same as at the first.

He held the three core threads.

The root anchor: still present in peripheral attention. The root's synchronized five-strand absorption rhythm running at its regular frequency, the triangular configuration maintaining the stable ambient that preserved it. The anchor was doing its work. He drew on it when the accommodation demands required the five-path structure to recalibrate and the external reference accelerated the recalibration.

Without the anchor, the recalibration time would have been approximately three times longer.

The anchor was why the botanical text specified the root as a requirement rather than an enhancement.

At the seventh hour, the first inscription stone on the boring layer's eastern face began running warm.

He felt it through the Still Center's ambient contact — a faint heat in the formation environment at the stone's position. The boring layer's design specification included a thermal response to high output load: inscription stones ran warm under sustained high-output-calibration conditions. He had planned for up to two stones. The first stone running warm at hour seven was within projection.

He noted it and continued.

— ◆ —

At the ninth hour, the accommodation phase's second peak arrived.

Not the Energy Path's lock this time. The Body Path's lock was completing — the second of the five locks to reach completion, forty seconds behind the Energy Path's. The Body Path's completion resonance propagated through the framework in a different pattern from the Energy Path's: where the Energy Path's propagation had been direct and dense, the Body Path's was structural — it resonated through the bone and meridian walls rather than through the Qi channels, producing an accommodation demand that the Soul Path and Bloodline Path locks registered through the physical framework rather than the cultivation channels.

Dual-channel accommodation demand. He had not modeled this specifically.

He managed it.

The management required releasing fractional attentional holding from the boring layer's maintenance to redirect it toward the Body Path lock's accommodation response. The boring layer ran at slightly reduced calibration for eleven seconds — not enough to produce a detectable ambient change in the exterior monitoring, but enough that he was aware of the reduction.

He restored the boring layer's calibration at the eleven-second mark.

The second inscription stone on the eastern face began running warm at the ninth-hour-and-twenty-minute mark.

Still within projection.

At the ninth-hour-and-forty-minute mark, the Body Path's lock completed.

Two of five.

Three locks still transforming.

He held them.

— ◆ —

The tenth hour was not the hardest.

He had expected it to be the hardest, based on the Foundation file's projections and the cessation test program's data. The projection had been that the tenth hour — the accommodation phase's theoretical peak demand window — would be the most demanding period.

The tenth hour was the most demanding period in absolute terms. But it was not subjectively the hardest, because the subjective experience of an attempt hour was not determined only by the absolute demand level. It was determined by the relationship between the demand level and his current attentional capacity.

At the tenth hour, both were lower than at the peak accommodation events.

The five-lock framework was settling into stable patterns — the accommodation demands reducing as the locks' resonance propagation frequencies found stable relationships with each other. The attentional reserves were recovering incrementally as the demand reduced. The relationship between demand and capacity was improving.

The ninth hour had been harder than the tenth.

He filed this for the Foundation file's post-attempt analysis section and continued.

At the tenth-hour-and-fifty-minute mark, the Soul Path's lock completed.

Three of five.

The secondary hall's lamp oil was running low. He had not planned for lamp oil. He noted this as a preparation gap.

Two locks remaining.

He held them through the eleventh hour.

— ◆ —

The Bloodline Path's lock completed at the eleventh-hour-and-three-minute mark.

Four of five.

The Law Path's thread remained. The Grand Aether World's Rank-5 restriction had sealed it to near-nothing for reasons he had not yet fully understood — Mystery C in the mystery file, the cross-reference notation in Keller's handwriting, the five-hundred-year enrollment record's redacted period. The Law Path's thread was present. The thread's lock was engaging. The engagement was proceeding at approximately one-fifth the rate of the other four locks.

He did not have the energy to be frustrated by this.

He had, in fact, conserved the energy he might have used being frustrated by this specifically for the period when the Law Path's thread-lock would be the only remaining element and he would need to sustain the entire five-lock framework at integration-phase pressure while the slowest lock completed.

The cessation test program had not identified this conservation requirement.

He had identified it in the first six hours of the attempt and had begun managing against it at the seventh hour.

He held.

The secondary hall's lamp oil finished at the eleventh-hour-and-thirty-minute mark. The secondary hall went dark. He did not need light.

The Law Path's thread-lock was at sixty percent completion.

He held.

At sixty-one percent.

At seventy.

The boring layer's two warm inscription stones were at the edge of the thermal specification — not exceeded, at the edge. He was aware of them the way he was aware of the lamp oil being out and the floor's stone being cold and the sound of the compound's third-hour preparation staff beginning their work in the kitchen on the far side of the compound.

He was aware of everything in the secondary hall and none of it was more important than the thread-lock's progression.

Eighty percent.

Eighty-seven.

Ninety-three.

At ninety-seven percent completion, the Law Path's thread-lock produced a resonance output that was not proportional to its development level. The thread had been completing slowly but the completion resonance at ninety-seven percent was not thread-level. It was as if the thread had been accumulating the resonance potential of all eleven hours of the attempt and was releasing it in the final three percent.

The four completed locks had to accommodate this.

He had not planned for this either.

He accommodated it.

The accommodation took forty-four seconds and required everything he had left.

At the end of the forty-four seconds, the Law Path's thread-lock was at one hundred percent.

Five of five.

— ◆ —

The integration phase.

He had read one text that described the integration phase outcome for a genuine simultaneous five-path Foundation attempt. The text had said: they do not produce five separate foundations. They produce one.

He had understood this as metaphor.

It was not metaphor.

The five completed locks converged. Not adjacently. Not in parallel. At a single point — the integration point, the specific coordinates in the cultivation framework where all five paths' Foundation formations met at their origins. The convergence happened in the cultivation framework as a spatial event. He could feel it.

One origin. Five paths reaching it simultaneously from five directions. The result at the origin point was not five foundations sharing a space. It was one foundation with five structural components, the density at the integration point the combined density of five paths converged rather than the distributed density of five paths coexisting.

The density was considerable.

He extended his cultivation sense toward the integration point and the integration point pushed back. Not resisting — simply heavy enough that even perception required effort to enter.

He spent forty-seven minutes in the integration phase.

When it ended, he was Foundation Establishment Early.

Not as a designation. As a fact. The cultivation structure had produced a result. The result had a name in the outer sect's classification framework and the name was Foundation Establishment Early. The actual structure was something the Framework's classification vocabulary had not been built to describe.

He sat in the secondary hall's darkness and breathed.

The boring layer was running. Body Tempering Layer Two. Permanent fixture.

Nothing in the secondary hall had changed except what was inside him.

— ◆ —

Wei Shan had not moved from his corner.

The ceramic bottle beside him was on the floor, untouched. His hands were in his lap. His eyes were open in the darkness and they were on the northeast corner.

In his pocket, against his thumb: a detection stone running hot.

Ren looked across the secondary hall at him.

Wei Shan looked back.

Neither of them spoke for a long time.

"How long," Ren said finally.

Wei Shan pressed his thumb against the pocket. "It began during the integration phase," he said. "It has been running continuously since. Forty-seven minutes." A pause. "It is still warm."

He had said: it is getting hot. He had said: it is beginning to glow.

Now he said: it is still warm.

Ren understood the difference.

The detection stone had confirmed what it had been placed here forty-three years ago to confirm. The confirmation was complete. The stone was cooling toward its resting state. The detection had occurred.

"The letter," Ren said.

Wei Shan reached into the dark-covered text's carrying cloth. He produced an envelope — not the dark-covered text itself, but something that had been housed within the carrying cloth's inner pocket alongside the text for nine years.

He set it on the secondary table.

"The dark-covered text first," he said. "Then the letter. The text's account provides context the letter assumes you have."

"Tonight?"

Wei Shan looked at the envelope. "When you are ready. Not tonight. Rest first." He looked at the northeast corner. "You have been running a twelve-hour attempt after fourteen days in the Hollow after four and a half years of preparation. Rest first."

"The anomaly log entry."

"I will file it now." He stood — the first time in twelve hours he had changed position. His movements had the specific quality of someone returning to their body from a very long period of very focused attention. "The certification packet will be in the queue within ninety minutes of the log entry."

Ren looked at the eleven stones in the calibration positions. At the attempt formation. At the kit bag at the corner's edge.

"The post-Foundation task list," he said. "Eighteen items."

"They will still be there tomorrow," Wei Shan said.

He was right.

Ren lay down on the secondary hall's stone floor, in the northeast corner, in the position he had occupied for twelve hours of the attempt. He closed his eyes.

He slept.
