Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Cafeteria

The cafeteria was louder than usual.

Not celebration.

Calculation.

Daniel walked in with Tunde, Ayo, and Chinedu behind him.

Four aspiring coaches.

Four different groups.

Four separate battles.

They grabbed their trays and stepped into the open space.

That's when Daniel saw him.

Farouk.

He sat at the center of a table filled with other aspiring coaches. They weren't just eating — they were leaning in, listening.

Studying him.

Farouk had won his opening match.

Three points.

Second in Group E.

Power attracts gravity.

Tunde muttered under his breath, "Already building a circle."

Chinedu shook his head slightly. "No. He's building influence."

Farouk looked up.

Their eyes met.

No smile.

Just acknowledgment.

Match Day 2: Daniel vs Farouk.

Unbeaten vs chasing.

Daniel didn't look away.

He moved to a table across the room. Not hiding. Not approaching.

Neutral ground.

Above them, the massive cafeteria screen flickered on.

SYSTEM BROADCAST:

MATCH DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS

The noise in the room lowered immediately.

Clips rolled across the screen.

A dominant 3–0 performance from Group D.

A last-minute counterattack winner from Group B.

Then—

Group E.

Farouk's match.

High pressing.

Fast vertical transitions.

A clean finish inside the box.

Goal.

Three points.

The graphic beside his name showed:

Control Rating: 8.4

Press Efficiency: 91%

Adaptation Speed: High

Then Daniel's draw appeared.

Structured build-up.

Careful tempo.

Balanced risk.

One point.

His metrics showed discipline.

But not dominance.

The message was subtle — but visible.

The screen shifted.

MATCH DAY 2 FIXTURES

The cafeteria went silent again.

Group by group.

When Group E appeared:

Daniel vs Farouk.

A ripple moved through the room.

A few aspiring coaches turned to look at Daniel.

Farouk didn't move.

But one of the people at his table smirked.

Three points versus one.

Winner controls the group.

Loser starts chasing.

The screen continued scrolling.

Then—

GROUP F

Ayo vs Chinedu.

Silence dropped hard.

At their table, both of them looked up at the same moment.

Around the cafeteria, whispers began.

"They share a room."

"That's brutal scheduling."

"One of them is falling behind early."

The system held their names on screen longer than usual.

Intentional.

A predictive graphic appeared:

Projected Group Position After Match Day 2

If Chinedu wins — he moves into qualification range.

If Ayo loses — his elimination risk increases significantly.

This wasn't just a fixture.

It was pressure placement.

The screen dimmed.

Conversations slowly returned.

Farouk stood.

He walked past Daniel's table.

Paused.

"Three points changes perspective," he said calmly.

Daniel met his eyes.

"So does taking them."

Farouk didn't respond.

He kept walking.

At the table, no one was smiling now.

Because this wasn't dorm rivalry anymore.

It was separation.

One hundred aspiring coaches entered.

Thirty will leave.

And Match Day 2 would start deciding who belongs.
