Chapter 4 — The Eyes in the Crowd
Morning came too quickly.
Elara Vale barely slept.
The silver pendant rested against her collarbone, colder than usual, as if the metal had absorbed the strange energy from the night before.
Or maybe it was just her imagination.
She stepped through the gates of Westbridge High, the noise of students flooding the courtyard. Laughter. Music from someone's phone. The usual chaos of a normal morning.
Normal.
Except nothing felt normal anymore.
A strange heaviness lingered in the air.
Elara tightened her grip on the strap of her bag and walked toward the building. Every sound felt sharper today. Every movement clearer.
Too clear.
Someone dropped a pen three lockers away.
She heard it.
A group of girls whispered behind her.
She heard that too.
Her heartbeat quickened.
What is happening to me?
The pendant pulsed faintly against her skin.
Warm.
Alive.
"Elara!"
She turned as her best friend Mira hurried toward her, nearly colliding into her.
"You disappeared yesterday," Mira said, breathless. "I texted you like ten times."
"I just… went home early," Elara replied.
Mira narrowed her eyes.
"That's not like you."
Before Elara could answer—
The hallway went quiet.
Not completely.
But enough.
Like a ripple of silence spreading through the crowd.
Students began whispering.
"Who is that…?"
"Is he new?"
"Did you see his eyes?"
Elara followed their gaze.
And froze.
A tall boy stood near the entrance doors, surrounded by a strange emptiness as if people were instinctively keeping their distance.
Dark coat.
Black hair falling slightly over his eyes.
Still.
Watching.
Something about him felt… wrong.
Or maybe not wrong.
Dangerous.
For a moment—
His eyes lifted.
And locked with hers.
Gold.
Bright.
Ancient.
Elara's breath caught in her throat.
The pendant burned suddenly against her chest.
The boy's expression changed.
Just slightly.
Recognition.
Then—
He turned and walked away.
Just like that.
The noise of the hallway returned as if nothing had happened.
But Elara remained frozen.
Her heart pounding violently.
Mira blinked. "Okay… that was weird."
Elara swallowed slowly.
"Yes," she whispered.
But deep inside—
Something older than fear stirred.
Something that felt like destiny waking up.
And somewhere far beyond the city—
A pair of red eyes opened in the dark.
"They've found her."
