Chapter 18 - Chapter 16 — The Seal

The clearing remained silent long after the cloaked figure disappeared.

The wind stirred the leaves overhead, and the fires crackled softly, but none of the Lycans spoke. The tension in the air was thick enough to feel.

Lucien stood perfectly still, his eyes fixed on the place where the stranger had vanished.

Elara slowly lowered her hand from the pendant. Her fingers trembled slightly.

"It burned," she whispered.

Lucien turned instantly.

"Let me see."

She hesitated for a moment before stepping closer. Lucien gently lifted the silver pendant between his fingers. The metal was warm—far warmer than it should have been.

Gamma noticed the faint glow still lingering within the charm.

"That's not normal," he muttered.

Elara looked between them. "You both keep saying things like that. Someone needs to explain what's happening."

Lucien released the pendant slowly.

For a moment, he seemed to be deciding something.

Then he sighed.

"The messenger wasn't lying," he said quietly.

Gamma stiffened. "Lucien—"

"It's time she knows," Lucien interrupted.

Elara's heart began to race.

"Knew what?"

Lucien's gaze locked onto hers.

"That pendant you're wearing isn't just jewelry," he said. "It's a seal."

Elara frowned. "A seal for what?"

Gamma crossed his arms. "For power."

Lucien nodded once.

"Power that shouldn't exist in the human world."

Elara stared at them both, confused.

"I don't understand."

"You weren't meant to grow up like a normal human," Lucien continued. "Your parents hid you. They protected you."

A chill ran down her spine.

"You knew my parents?"

Lucien's voice softened slightly.

"Yes."

The answer hit her harder than she expected.

"They were guardians," he continued. "Ancient protectors. Their duty was to keep certain forces in balance."

Elara shook her head slowly.

"That makes no sense. They were just ordinary people."

"They wanted you to believe that," Gamma said.

Lucien stepped closer to her.

"The seal in that pendant was created to contain something inside you."

Elara's breath caught.

"Inside me?"

Before Lucien could answer, the pendant suddenly flared with light again.

Brighter this time.

A pulse of energy burst outward.

The lanterns inside the nearby lodge flickered violently. The flames in the fire pits bent outward as if pushed by invisible wind.

Several Lycans in the clearing turned in alarm.

Elara gasped and grabbed the pendant.

"I didn't do that!"

Lucien held her shoulders to steady her.

"I know."

The light faded slowly, but the air still felt charged.

Gamma's voice was low.

"That's the second surge tonight."

Lucien looked down at the pendant, his expression dark.

"The seal is weakening."

Elara's stomach twisted.

"What happens if it breaks?"

Neither man answered immediately.

That silence terrified her more than anything.

Finally, Lucien spoke.

"If the seal breaks… the power inside you will awaken completely."

"And that's bad?" she asked.

Lucien met her eyes.

"It depends."

"On what?"

"On who finds you first."

A cold realization settled over the clearing.

The messenger.

The hunters.

The rogues.

They weren't just searching for her.

They were waiting.

Waiting for the moment the seal finally shattered.
