Alice sat in the front seat next to her brother, Lonewolf. Their car was gliding past the school courtyard as evening settled in. The sun had already dipped below the horizon, leaving behind streaks of crimson that bled slowly across the twilight sky. She had just finished her extra classes and was heading home as usual, but then, her sharp eyes caught two familiar figures sprinting across the open field toward the forest—one of them was Edward.
"Hm? Edward?" Alice murmured, narrowing her eyes to be sure. Edward and Henry looked unusually frantic, running with a desperate speed as if heading toward something far too dangerous to explain. Lonewolf braked, slowing the car as he noticed his sister's sudden tension. He turned to her with a furrowed brow.
"Alice, what are you looking at?" Alice pointed toward the treeline near the building. "Brother... that's Edward and Henry! They're heading into the woods!"
"So?" Lonewolf asked, though a hint of concern laced his voice. Alice turned to him, her eyes shimmering with a sudden, sharp instinct.
"It's not normal. They look like... they're walking into a trap." Lonewolf went silent for a moment before nodding. He slammed his foot on the accelerator. The car surged forward along the perimeter of the field, cutting through the evening silence. Before long, they reached the edge of the forest near the back bridge. Alice flung the door open before the car had even come to a full stop, rushing toward the sounds of a clash echoing from deep within the trees. Lonewolf followed close behind, his heart racing.
The sounds of roaring, magical impacts, and snapping timber vibrated through the air. Alice and her brother took cover behind a massive oak, peering through the veil of shadows at the battlefield. What they saw made their eyes go wide.
Edward stood in the center of the fray, his face streaked with blood and his clothes shredded. But what captured their attention most were his eyes—glowing with a haunting blend of gold and crimson—and a body that seemed to heal at a rate far beyond any ordinary human.
"He... he's no ordinary man," Lonewolf muttered under his breath, his eyes fixed on Edward's inhuman gaze. Alice clenched her fists so hard her nails dug into her palms.
"Edward... really does have vampire blood..." Before their eyes, Tyler lunged at Edward again, his power exploding in waves of dark shadows. Yet, Edward countered with incredible wit and agility. Alice held her breath while Lonewolf glanced at his sister, his expression a mix of shock and confusion.
"This... is much bigger than we thought," Lonewolf said slowly. Alice nodded, trembling with awe and fear, but her gaze shifted from doubt to fierce determination.
"He's not a monster," she whispered. "He's protecting them... and I'm going to stand by him." Lonewolf stiffened, turning to her with a stern, authoritative look.
"Alice..." his voice was heavy. "Listen to me. Vampires and Wolves... it's impossible. It goes against everything we were taught since the day we were born." Alice kept her eyes on Edward, who stood battered in the shadows. She refused to look away.
"Then maybe... some of the things we were taught are wrong," she said softly but firmly. "If he isn't different from us at heart—if he's willing to risk his life for others—why should we hate him?"
"Because of what they are!" Lonewolf growled, his eyes flashing with deep-seated rage and fear. "They might look like they have hearts, but in the end... the blood in their veins leads only to hunger... to ruin!"
Alice turned to her brother, tears welling in her eyes. "But he isn't like the others. You saw it, Brother. He chose to stand for what is right. He chose to protect us, even though he's as broken as anyone else." Lonewolf gritted his teeth, closing his eyes as if trying to shut out the conflict within him.
"I just... don't want to see you get hurt," he exhaled quietly. "We are Wolves. You are part of the pack. You know what that means." Alice nodded but did not move.
"I know... but I also know that your fear shouldn't strip someone of their chance to prove themselves." Lonewolf's large frame shook slightly as he drew a heavy breath. Finally, he looked away, jaw clenched.
"If anything happens to you... don't make me lose you the way we lost Mother." He glanced back at the now-quieting battlefield and gave a curt nod. "Wait at the car. If he survives this, we'll talk about it again."
As they turned to head back, a terrifying roar filled with agony stopped them in their tracks. The scream of the dark vampire echoed through the forest. The enchanted dagger had struck Tyler's arm like a bolt of lightning; sparks flew and the stench of burning flesh filled the air. Tyler recoiled, his arm charred, his screams shaking the very leaves on the trees.
On the bridge above, Lonewolf stared in disbelief. That hybrid boy... was standing his ground against a beast without flinching. His face was a mess of blood, but his eyes burned with resolve. He still gripped the dagger tight, ready to strike again if Tyler moved. Alice looked at her brother, her eyes reflecting a silent question: Do you see it now? Do you see that it's not his blood that matters, but his heart?
Lonewolf didn't answer immediately. He stood frozen, watching Edward's upright figure. Though Edward was panting heavily, there was no sign of retreat.
"He's got guts," Lonewolf admitted under his breath. "Anyone would be terrified to face Tyler like that... but he didn't back down." Alice's face lit up with a spark of hope.
"Do you mean that?" Lonewolf sighed, crossing his arms. His expression remained stoic, but the coldness had thawed.
"I don't trust him yet... but I admit, he isn't weak. And... perhaps he isn't like every other vampire I've known." Alice offered a small, relieved smile.
Far off, Tyler let out one last primal roar before vanishing into the darkness, leaving the shadow of defeat behind. Edward breathed heavily, watching the spot where his enemy disappeared, unaware of the pair of eyes still watching him.
The dry leaves crunched under Lonewolf's heavy boots as he stepped down from the bridge. His presence radiated the raw power of a pack leader, but something in his eyes had changed—from mere suspicion to a sense of curiosity and responsibility.
"Alice," he said without looking back, his voice commanding. "Go back to the car. I'll go check on the wounded." Alice started to protest; she wanted to go to Edward, to be by his side. But Lonewolf's tone was firm enough to stop her.
"But—"
"It's not safe enough for you yet." Lonewolf turned sharply to lock eyes with his sister. His gaze, usually so strict, softened just a fraction. "I promise... I'll look after them. Including him." Alice bit her lip before nodding slowly. She knew if anyone could handle the aftermath of such a crisis, it was her brother.
"If anything happens to Edward..." she whispered. Lonewolf glanced at her and nodded. "I won't let anything happen to him. If he can stand that tall, it means he's truly fighting for someone."
Alice turned and headed back to the car, while Lonewolf stepped into the settling dust of the battlefield. The air was thick with the scent of blood and magic. He found Hill collapsed nearby, and Ethan leaning against a tree, his breath shallow. Lonewolf rushed over, dropping to one knee beside Hill to check his pulse.
"He's alive," he muttered. "But if we don't stop the bleeding, he won't make it." He grabbed a bandage from his belt and expertly bound Hill's wound before turning to Edward, who stood in the shadows, still clutching his dagger with trembling hands.
"Kid... if you can still stand, go help your other friend over there. I've got this one," Lonewolf called out. Edward turned, his blood-streaked face showing a flash of deep gratitude. He nodded weakly and hurried to Ethan's side.
Perhaps—just perhaps—a world inhabited by both Vampires and Wolves was beginning to change. Not because their blood had merged, but because their hearts had begun to accept one another.
Ethan signaled his subordinates, who emerged from the shadows to carry their master home. Ethan himself needed time to recover in seclusion, as did Henry. As for Edward, Ethan entrusted him to Lonewolf's care for the journey back.
