Chapter 8 - The Secrets in Basement

Author's POV

The dim light of the dorm hallway flickered as Ace stepped out of Jay's room, his silhouette stretching long and jagged against the concrete.

The tenderness he had shown moments ago was gone, replaced by a cold, predatory focus. In his hand, he crushed the black envelope he'd snatched from under Jay's pillow.

The Board was moving. And they were targeting the heart of their group.

He didn't get far before he saw a figure leaning against the opposite wall. Zein. She was shrouded in the shadows, her arms crossed over her chest, her eyes tracking his every movement. She had seen him leave Jay's room.

"She's sleeping," Ace said, his voice returning to that low, dangerous velvet.

Zein stepped into the light. Her brave, resilient facade was there, but her eyes held a flicker of something raw—jealousy, perhaps, or maybe just the exhaustion of carrying the weight of their world.

"I know. Keifer is on his way back with meds. He won't be happy finding you here, Supremo."

Ace took a step closer, invading her personal space until the air between them hummed with the tension of a live wire. "Keifer is a tactical genius, but he's blinded by his protectiveness. He didn't see the envelope. The Board isn't just watching Jay-jay; they're baiting her."

Zein's breath hitched as Ace reached out. He didn't touch her skin; instead, his gloved hand brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

The gesture was agonizingly slow, a sharp contrast to the violence they lived in every day. "And you, Zein... you're looking at me like I'm the enemy again."

"You are the hierarchy, Ace," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I'm just a student trying to keep my friends alive."

"You're more than that," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. "You're the only thing in this school that doesn't feel like a lie."

The moment was shattered by the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots. Keifer rounded the corner, flanked by Percy and Felix.

The atmosphere shifted instantly from a simmering slow-burn to a standoff. Keifer's eyes narrowed, his brain clearly calculating the proximity between the Supremo and Zein.

"Move, Craige," Keifer said, his voice a gravelly warning. "My girl is in that room, and I don't recall inviting the Student Council to her bedside."

Ace didn't flinch. He tossed the crumpled black envelope at Keifer's feet. "The Board doesn't wait for invitations, Watson. They're calling a 'Red Trial' for the newbies. Jay-jay is the primary target because she's the one who makes us look... human."

Percy picked up the envelope, his usual self-obsessed smirk vanishing. "A Red Trial? That's basically a sanctioned execution."

The following afternoon ,the two groups gathered in the "Basement"—a hidden, damp room beneath the gym that Dave and Rory had reinforced with tech and heavy locks.

The integration was fascinating. Jerome was trying to teach Ci-N a card trick, while Ci-N was subtly explaining the probability of the trick failing based on the humidity in the room.

Vanessa and Freya were huddled in a corner, Freya showing Vanessa how to hide a small dagger in a "girly" garter belt.

"It's about the aesthetic of surprise," Freya whispered, her loyalty to Jay shining through. "If they think you're just a pretty face, you've already won."

Zein watched them, a small smile playing on her lips. She felt a presence behind her and didn't need to turn to know it was Ace. They stood in the shadows, the "King" and his "Protector," watching over their chaotic, blended family.

They shouldn't," Ace replied. "No one should belong in a place like this."

Across the room, Keifer sat on a crate, Jay-jay leaning heavily against his shoulder. Her fever had broken, but she was still pale.

Keifer's arm was wrapped around her with a possessive, iron grip. His eyes, however, weren't on his girlfriend—they were watching Ace and Zein.

"Look at them," Keifer muttered to Jay, nodding toward the pair in the shadows. "The Supremo is practically vibrating. He wants to pull her out of here, but he knows she's the only thing keeping him grounded."

Jay-jay chirped, leaning her chin on Keifer's hand. "They're like a tragedy waiting to happen. But a really pretty one. Like a thunderstorm meeting a lighthouse."

"Focus, Jay-jay," Keifer sighed, though he pulled her closer. "If the Red Trial happens tomorrow, the Supremo and Zein will be the vanguard. We're the flanking force. I've analyzed the Board's patterns. They'll use Madam Violet's 'Silence' protocol."

The mystery deepened at midnight. While the others slept, Jay-jay felt a strange pull. She crept out of the Basement, her blood trauma making her heart race as she passed the dark stains on the corridor walls. She reached the Old Library, where the "secret buried in depth" whispered to her.

She found a loose floorboard near the restricted section—something Raze had mentioned in a cryptic note left in her locker. Underneath wasn't a diary or a weapon, but an old photograph.

It was a picture of the Board members from twenty years ago. In the center stood a man who looked exactly like Keifer's father—but next to him was a woman with a familiar face and a pendant in their hand. The same pendant Zein wore every day.

"Looking for answers, Jasper?"

Jay jumped, turning to find Samnath, the mysterious girl, perched on a bookshelf like a gargoyle. Her eyes were sharp with intelligence.

"Samnath," Jay breathed. "What is this?"

"The reason this school exists," Samnath said, jumping down silently. "It wasn't built for education. It was built for selection. Your friend Zein? She's not just a student. She's the 'Prototype.' And Ace? He's the 'Guardian.' The Board is testing if love makes the Prototype stronger or if it's a fatal flaw."

Jay's hands shook. "And Keifer? Why is his dad in this?"And why did this woman looks familiar ?

"Because your boyfriend's family built the cages, Jay-jay," Samnath smirked, a cruel twist of her lips. "The question is, will he help you break out, or will he lock the door?"

Before Jay could respond, siren echoed from the main office—high, piercing. When she turned Samnath disappear in dark
