Chapter 56 - The one with a punishment

Chapter: Two Days (Jay's POV)

Home.

I never thought I'd miss something so simple this much.

The quiet.

The warmth.

The feeling of being safe.

"Sit down," Keifer said immediately as we walked in, his hand hovering near me like I might fall any second.

"I am fine," I sighed.

"You fainted."

"I got treated."

"You collapsed."

"I'm alive."

He gave me a look.

I rolled my eyes and sat anyway.

Before he could say anything else—

Celestine walked in.

And the look on her face?

Oh no.

"Do you know," she started slowly, arms crossed,

"what this man did while you were unconscious?"

I blinked. "What?"

Keifer immediately stiffened. "Celestine—"

"No," she cut him off. "She deserves to know."

I turned to him slowly.

"…Keifer?"

"He didn't eat," she said.

My expression dropped.

"He didn't sleep."

I stared at him.

"All day," she finished.

Silence.

I stood up.

Slowly.

Too slowly.

"Jay—careful," he said, stepping forward.

"Don't."

He froze.

"You didn't eat?" I asked quietly.

"It wasn't important."

"Not important?" my voice rose slightly. "You fainted!"

"I'm fine—"

"You don't get to say that!"

I snapped.

The room went quiet.

"I was in there fighting for my health," I said, my voice softer but sharper. "And you were out here destroying yours?"

He didn't answer.

"Keifer…" I whispered, hurt slipping into my tone.

"What if something happened to you too?"

"I wouldn't care," he said quietly.

"I would."

That hit him.

I saw it.

Silence again.

I took a deep breath.

Then—

"Fine."

He frowned slightly. "Fine…?"

"You're getting punished."

"…what?"

"For two days," I said calmly, crossing my arms,

"you are not allowed to touch me."

His expression dropped instantly.

"Jay."

"No kisses."

"Jay—"

"No holding."

"Jay."

"Only hugging," I added firmly.

"That's not fair," he said immediately.

"Oh, it's very fair."

"I almost lost you—"

"And I almost lost you too," I shot back. "So this is your consequence."

He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated.

"You're serious."

"I am."

He stepped closer instinctively—

Then stopped himself.

"This is torture," he muttered.

I raised a brow. "Good."

But then…

His expression softened.

"You're okay…" he said quietly, almost to himself.

My anger melted just a little.

"I am," I said softly.

He hesitated.

Then slowly—

Carefully—

Wrapped his arms around me.

A hug.

Only a hug.

But the way he held me…

Tight.

Careful.

Like I might disappear.

"You scared me," he whispered into my hair.

"I know."

"I thought…" his voice broke slightly. "I thought I'd lose you."

I tightened my hold on him as much as my weak body allowed.

"You didn't," I murmured. "I'm still here."

He exhaled slowly, holding me closer.

"Two days," I reminded softly.

He groaned quietly. "You're cruel."

I smiled faintly.

"Eat first," I said, pulling back slightly. "Then sleep."

"Yes, ma'am," he muttered.

I narrowed my eyes

"After I hug you "

I rolled my eyes but didn't let go

Chapter: Countdown (Jay's POV)

Recovery was supposed to be peaceful.

Quiet.

Calm.

It was not.

"Don't move."

"I'm literally just sitting."

"You moved."

I stared at Keifer.

"You're impossible."

"And you collapsed," he replied instantly, placing a glass of water in my hand. "Drink."

I drank.

Because arguing was useless.

He hadn't left my side since we got home.

Not for a second.

Not even to sit properly.

"You're hovering," I muttered.

"I'm watching."

"You're staring."

"I'm making sure you're breathing."

I blinked at him.

"…I am breathing."

"Good. Keep doing that."

I tried not to smile.

Failed.

"Did you eat?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

"Yes."

"When?"

"…recently."

"Keifer."

"I ate," he repeated.

I gave him a look.

He sighed.

"Fine. I'll eat again."

"Good."

He walked away reluctantly, like leaving me alone for ten seconds might cause another disaster.

I shook my head, smiling faintly.

But the moment he came back—

He sat close.

Too close.

Instinctively, his hand moved toward my waist—

Then stopped.

Oh.

Right.

The punishment.

I smirked.

"Problem?"

He gave me a look.

A dangerous one.

"You're enjoying this."

"A little."

He leaned closer.

Not touching.

Just close enough to make my heart race.

"You really think you'll survive two days?" he murmured.

"I'm doing just fine."

His eyes darkened slightly.

"Good," he said quietly. "Because the second those two days are over…"

I raised a brow.

"I'm not being nice anymore."

My breath hitched slightly.

He leaned even closer, his voice dropping—

low.

controlled.

dangerous in that way only he could be.

"You're not escaping me after that."

" I'll make sure the neighbour's hear your screams "

I swallowed.

"You're dramatic."

"And you like it."

I looked away, hiding a small smile.

He leaned back finally, running a hand through his hair.

"This is torture," he muttered.

"You deserve it."

"For loving you too much?"

"For not taking care of yourself."

Silence.

Then softer—

"…I was scared."

That made my chest tighten.

I reached for him—

And this time, I hugged him first.

"You don't get to scare me like that either," I whispered.

His arms wrapped around me instantly.

Tight.

Protective.

"I won't," he murmured. "Not again."

Later That Night

I was lying down when he walked in again.

With food.

Again.

"You just fed me."

"You need strength."

"You need to relax."

"I will when you're better."

I sighed but sat up anyway.

He fed me slowly this time.

Carefully.

Like I was fragile.

"Keifer."

"Hmm?"

"I'm not glass."

"I know."

"Then stop acting like I'll break."

He paused.

Then looked at me.

Seriously.

"You almost did."

That shut me up.

I softened.

"…I'm okay now."

His expression didn't fully relax.

But his touch did.

"Still," he murmured, brushing my hair back gently, "I'm not taking chances."

I smiled faintly.

"Overprotective."

"Only with you."

And honestly?

I didn't mind.

That night—

He stayed close.

Not touching more than allowed.

But always there.

Watching.

Caring.

Protecting.

And somewhere between his quiet worry…

And my soft teasing…

We found our balance again.
