It was a new morning in Denver, was groggy after waking up. He changes his alarm tone to more of a deet deet deet da da from its original ring ring ring, like an old phone. Suffice to say he didn't sleep through it, which was a very good thing but he did have one slight problem that did bother him and it wasn't waking up early. It wasn't that he was sleepy per se; it wasn't that his eyes were irritated or anything of the like. It was more along the lines of what happened yesterday with Skyler. He couldn't quite understand what she meant and what was going on. He was honestly a little concerned about it, perhaps even a little excited. Delusions of her liking him were true. That would be the first time ever that a girl has liked him, which made him think but it also made him consider that perhaps she was just being playful. If that is just the case, he'd make a fool of himself just going for it. He'd have to check and he decided that day if Skyler was on duty today he would ask but how to phrase the question was what was on his mind at the moment. He wasn't quite sure what to say or how to say it.
While Denver was getting ready, he was contemplating ways in which he could bring up the subject of what exactly she meant by what you said yesterday. Without actually repeating what she said, he would try to get an answer that felt like he was asking a general question, not asking a leading question.
He always heard that asking leading questions generally leads to disaster when it comes to misunderstandings in friendship. If this were to be a misunderstanding, he would of course be devastated but he would deal with it when the time came.
He was supposed to be getting ready but he was standing daydreaming, thinking about Skyler. This was a bit of a problem when he noticed that he was standing around like a fool, thinking without getting ready. He decided, "Well now it's time to get ready." He was only wearing a shirt and underwear. He quickly put on his pants and did what he did in his usual morning routine. He quickly got outside and headed to work.
He only then noticed that in his daydreams he'd only had half a cup of coffee and had not eaten breakfast. He decided that he would stop somewhere on the way to get breakfast and a second coffee. Lucky for him there was still plenty of time and he was on time but the reason he was in a hurry is because he wanted to see if Skyler
was indeed there.
Denver walked in through the glass doors, arriving at work, and the first thing he looked around to see who was there. There were no customers yet; it was still quite early but behind the counter was Tim and of course Felix. He approached Tim and greeted him. Tim greeted back and Denver went to get changed. He decided to get changed quickly and come out as fast as he could. He just thought perhaps if we get through the day a bit faster, the day wouldn't be so bad. That was his initial idea but the moment he came out he bumped into Tim. Second time in so many days that he bumped into Tim at the door.
Interestingly enough this time he asked, "You okay, Tim?" Tim said, "No, ah sure I'm ok. I wasn't paying attention; it seemed his mind was elsewhere too." He went into the changing room for some reason and didn't go into the counter while Denver was standing at the counter. He was thinking, but then Felix also left the counter and went to the back office, all Denver could think was, "Good riddance. He really did not like Felix."
Less than a few customers came in in drips and drabs here and there and then something interesting happened: a large group came in for an office party that's what it looked like to Denver. When this happened Denver was working frantically, getting ready for this very large order, about 15 coffees all to go. For some reason no one had folded the takeaway boxes, which can hold two cups at a time or four cups at a time.
Denver had to fold takeaway boxes into shape from flat sheets, place cups in the machine, hit the button, reload, refold, and seal.
There was no one to help him and there were more people coming in by the minute. He decided to call out to the back, "Tim, Felix, busy, get out here", in quite a loud voice that everybody heard. That wasn't just going to be him at the counter; of the two, Tim was first out; they rushed out from inside the changeroom and office, and started taking orders. Then things started slowing and flowing a bit more smoothly after this large order was finally paid for and taken, which seems to be quite a struggle because they ordered 15 coffees with only 7 of them to carry. Not very easy, for sure.
When they left Denver sighed in relief and sank down into the chair that was next to him. That's when Felix asked, "What's wrong with you?" Denver looked at him. His face turned to a frown and he said in quite a loud tone: "While I was dealing with 15 orders, you're sitting on your ass so I'm gonna take a few minutes and settle mine if you don't mind." After saying so Denver turned around to face the door, still seated on the chair, and didn't pay any more attention to Felix although in his mind he was throwing water on Felix to shut him up.
Things were quiet at the cafe today; then he was always watching the clock. It was a very quiet day. People were walking by, not really coming in. Most of them seem to stay away for a while. They didn't seem to want to come in. He wandered about inside the store by the tables, straightening the chairs. He was trying to keep himself busy so he doesn't fall asleep on his chair, which has happened before.
Denver then looked outside for a few minutes and he began to wonder. His mind wandered back to what he thought this morning.
Was it indeed her true feelings? When was her next shift? When this question of shifts came to mind, he decided to go and check. He walked to the change room door and next to the change room door on the left-hand side was a large glass panel. Inside the glass panel he found the shifts. Luckily things are colour coded. His shift was marked in red so it was like he was always angry. The other two men were purple and green and of course the yellow was Skyler. He thought, 'Shouldn't it be pink or maybe blue?' He was wondering that while he looked at it and he saw that Skyler was on night shift as of tomorrow and that their shifts wouldn't coincide.
They wouldn't have shifts together for the next three days. Well this was going on in his mind; something strange happened.
Someone came in. It was a lady with short black hair that went around and framed her face and just went below her chin. He recognised her immediately. It was Lady in Red and she went straight to Tim, who grasped her hand and started talking to her. He was taken aback by this. He was shocked, so shocked in fact that he actually felt his legs go weak and he had to grab a chair.
Now what happened next is even more crazy. Then Red took her coffee and left and blew a kiss and sent it to Tim, of all people. He was shocked. He thought he had decided what he was going to do. He knew he was going to pick; he wanted to see if Skyler was the one but why do you feel so uncomfortable seeing Tim get on so well with Lady in Red?
While in his mind weighing the situation that just happened around in his mind, he considered the differences between Skyler and Julia that he had read. He found that they were both unique and both quite beautiful. Although at first he thought Julia was beautiful from the start and then he re-noticed Skyler's beauty after the fact, which she felt kind of bad about. He thought that Skyler would be a better match because it seems that this lady in red has rather loose morals and seems to play around with multiple men. We saw her the other night on a man's arm and I should blame this on Tim of all people.
I'll travel with this. Denver kept staring at his face. Didn't look at anything in particular. It was just looking, looking, looking. Next thing he knew he was hit by a pack of sugar. A one serve. When he noticed what happened he picked it up and looked around and looked at Tim. Tim said, "Earth to Denver, there's a rush coming in." Denver stood up and went to the counter before anything could start. He said to Tim, "What's going on with you and her there mate?" Tim just smiled and said that's a secret. You've got the blonde lump shell and I've got the redhead, the fiery redhead.
When Denver heard this he was shocked. Julia's not a redhead, he said. That's when Tim said, "Well you've got eyes so use them. I'm sure if you look carefully enough you'd see what's going on and accept it." With that the conversation ended and Denver walked away to the change room, got changed, and left. That was his day.
