Chapter 40: Unexpected Situation

"Mmph..."

Accompanied by rustling sounds and what sounded like someone trying to speak with their mouth covered, Tate frowned without opening her eyes.

Jenner, making the noise, craned his neck and raised his head to look at Tate. Seeing she still had no reaction, his face turned red with anger.

Just as he was about to create even more noise, a pillow hit him squarely in the head.

"Shut up, don't disturb my sleep!" Tate mumbled, rolled over, and went back to sleep.

Jenner's entire body flushed red with rage. He looked with difficulty toward the nearby bathroom, his eyes full of longing.

Hard to imagine—a grown man, kidnapped and carried off in the middle of the night, then woken by his bladder in the middle of the night and holding it until now. How painful that was.

Jenner felt the intense pressure in his abdomen. He looked down at his pants. No, he couldn't do it. He was a man with dignity. He couldn't do it in the room.

Then the urgency in his abdomen intensified several degrees.

Alright, at least not in front of a woman.

Jenner looked toward the bathroom and, like a maggot, slowly arched his body up, supporting himself with his head, then relaxed his body, his scalp scraping across the floor as he moved forward.

Yes, just like that. Hey, keep going!

As the distance closed, Jenner felt encouraged and did it again.

Closer. Almost there. One more time!

Looking at the bathroom right before him, Jenner's eyes filled with hope.

He arched his body. Just as he was about to thrust forward, he saw a pair of bare white feet appear beside him.

The toes were small and cute, without any nail polish. The arch was firm and athletic-looking—no flat feet problem here.

BANG—

Ah!

The suddenly closing bathroom door slammed into Jenner's head.

Jenner wanted to reach up and touch his head but discovered his hands were bound. He could only roll left and right to ease the pain in his skull.

"Oi, what are you going crazy about so early in the morning? Can't you be quiet? Don't other people need to sleep? Can you have a little sympathy?"

Three questions in a row made Jenner's scalp tingle. He was the one who'd been kidnapped!

His innocent eyes stared at Tate.

Tate looked half-asleep. She rubbed her eyes and yawned.

She looked down and saw Jenner holding a towel in his mouth like a dog, shaking his head wildly.

"Oh, oh. You want to talk, right!"

After watching for a while, Tate finally realized what Jenner wanted.

Jenner had never been this tired before. Not just physically tired—mainly mentally exhausted.

After his mouth was freed, Jenner asked in a dejected tone, "Can you untie me? I need to use the bathroom first. Whatever you want to say, we can talk after I'm done, okay?"

Jenner tried to keep his tone steady, but it still carried a hint of complaint.

"Mm~" Tate thought about it and nodded.

Caesar had told her to restrain Jenner and prevent him from escaping, not to treat Jenner like prey to toy with at will.

After untying the rope, Jenner staggered into the bathroom.

Ahh~

With the physical relief, Jenner's tense emotions relaxed considerably. Rationality reclaimed the high ground. He regained his ability to think.

He looked around.

The entire bathroom was very standard, identical to other rooms—a toilet, sink, and a shower stall.

Being underground, there was no window, but there was an air conditioning duct.

When Jenner's gaze moved to a certain spot on the ceiling, his eyes lit up.

Found it!

Jenner walked under the air intake grille, looked up, then compared it to his body width.

Only then did he discover he couldn't escape through the air conditioning duct. He'd most likely get stuck at the entrance and exit, or even in some narrow sections.

No choice. Jenner abandoned the escape idea.

He just hadn't anticipated that his last act of kindness before death would end like this.

He laughed at himself twice and gently opened the bathroom door.

The next second, cold sweat poured down Jenner's forehead. A chill climbed up his spine. His hair stood on end.

He saw Tate sprawled in a chair, holding a rifle in her hands, her face showing a faint cold smile.

"Hey, you actually didn't try to escape!"

"Ah, what a shame!"

Bastard, what are you disappointed about!

Jenner forcibly suppressed his urge to raise his hands and pretended to know nothing. "What are you talking about?"

"Oh." Tate looked somewhat disappointed as she raised the gun barrel. "Caesar said if you try to escape, I can take you out directly."

"He said you're very important, but if you escape, you're a bigger threat."

After all, inside the CDC, Caesar couldn't predict what Jenner might activate.

If the CDC really had some dangerous defense mechanism, Tate and the others definitely couldn't stop it.

Jenner took several deep breaths to stay calm and asked.

"This Caesar you mentioned—he's the one who sent you?"

Tate nodded. "Yes. If you have questions, ask them quickly."

"After all, there's a good chance you won't leave this room today."

Definitely a bunch of bastards. Jenner was hysterical inside, but his face was calm as a lake. "Why do you want to kill me?"

"Eh~" Tate instantly froze and quickly explained. "We don't seem to want to kill you. We want to recruit you to join us."

"Heh—" Jenner laughed, his face full of mockery. "This is how your organization recruits people?"

Tate realized she'd done something stupid and could only raise her gun.

The moment the gun rose, Jenner's hands also went up. The smile on his face froze.

She's not going to get embarrassed and angry and kill me, is she!

While Jenner panicked internally, he heard Tate say, "You, come sit down!"

Jenner obeyed, obediently raising his hands and sitting in the chair Tate had just occupied.

"Wait a moment!" Tate slightly lowered the gun barrel and found a walkie-talkie from her backpack nearby.

After turning it on, Tate called out quietly.

"Caesar, Caesar, are you there?"

"I'm here!" Caesar's voice came through quickly.

"Caesar, I think I did something bad."

"We're supposed to recruit Jenner, right? After I tied him up, I left him lying on the floor all night, then kept pointing a gun at him, threatening to kill him!"

"So, can we still recruit him? If not, should I just kill him and let you guys in?"

Hey, I can be recruited!

Although Jenner's desire to live wasn't strong, he didn't want to die like this. Death by gunshot was very painful. If he didn't die immediately, the pain would continue evolving.

Caesar on the other end heard this and was also somewhat stunned.

He'd only told Tate to tie up Jenner and prevent him from escaping so he could talk with Jenner.

If that didn't work, then kill Jenner.

But the current situation was—how had Jenner already been tortured so badly before the persuasion even started?

Caesar was silent for a while before speaking. "Let me talk to Jenner."
