Chapter 56
Actually, Caesar didn't care at all whether Merle was loyal to him. He only cared whether Daryl was loyal to him.
Merle could be disloyal to anyone, but he would absolutely be loyal to his own brother.
After Merle left, Amy also walked over.
Seeing Amy linger without leaving, Caesar asked with some confusion, "Didn't Carol arrange a room for you?"
Amy's pretty eyebrows knitted together. "Why would Carol arrange a room for me?"
Caesar was instantly stumped. Right—why would Carol arrange a room for her?
"Alright, hurry up and go to bed."
Caesar thought about it and gave up thinking about this question.
"Which room should I sleep in?" Amy pointed at the several rooms around them.
Caesar said expressionlessly, "You should go back to your own room to sleep, not stay here."
"But shouldn't secretaries live with their boss?"
Amy stepped forward two paces, approaching Caesar, her face full of sincerity.
This girl... does she really not understand, or is she pretending?
"Is your family Christian?"
Caesar suddenly asked.
"Yes, my family has always been Evangelical Christian." Amy said.
America had some families belonging to conservative branches of Christianity. The doctrines of these denominations clearly limited sexual behavior to within marriage.
Before marriage, family elders would have children avoid everything sex-related, including sex education.
Caesar understood why Amy's thinking was like this. She only knew that secretaries and bosses lived together, but didn't know they were in romantic relationships.
Caesar also couldn't explain it to Amy. He thought of Andrea—was Andrea the same?
"What about your sister Andrea? Is she like you?"
Amy shook her head and said, "After Andrea went to college, she stopped being Christian."
No wonder.
Caesar understood in his heart, but just said, "Tonight you should go sleep with your sister."
"I still have business tonight. You'd be alone in the stone house—wouldn't you be scared?"
Amy knew about Caesar's combat plan for tonight. She thought about it and agreed, nodding.
Night deepened. The valley's temperature plummeted.
The mountain ranges loomed dark and towering. Looking from the ranch, most of the view was obscured by mountains.
Only a few torches burned in the ranch, making crackling sounds. Occasionally cattle and sheep called out. It was very quiet.
The stone house door opened. Caesar walked out, adjusted his hat, exhaled a breath, and looked at the silent ranch.
Caesar's appearance was like a signal. Several nearby small cabins made sounds. One shadow after another walked out from the darkness.
Under the black night, faces couldn't be seen clearly. Every person held combat weapons, silent, but you could feel that murderous aura.
Several figures walked out from the crowd. Only after entering the stone house could their faces be seen clearly.
Daryl held his crossbow and nodded at Caesar. Caesar responded.
Merle laughed and stepped forward, his butt leaning against the railing in front of the stone house, grinning as he said, "Boss, we leaving now?"
Caesar looked down at his watch. Two or three in the morning—this was when people were most tired.
Time to depart!
"Morales, T-Dog." Caesar called out toward the crowd.
Morales walked out from the side. He stroked his goatee. "Boss, I'm here."
T-Dog also walked out from the crowd. Without showing his teeth, he almost merged with the black night.
Caesar pointed at the two. "Today you two will lead squads."
Morales and T-Dog exchanged glances and nodded at Caesar.
"Colby, Lloyd, Ryan, Tate—you four follow me!"
Caesar ordered his trusted subordinates, receiving affirmative responses from all four.
"You have only one objective—rush into their houses and shoot bullets into their heads."
"I don't want survivors. Understand? I don't want survivors."
Caesar braced his hands on the railing and spoke.
"Understood!"
The crowd shouted in unison.
"Move out!!!"
They split into two routes. Daryl and Merle led one team toward one direction. Morales and T-Dog led the other team.
They drove pickups rapidly out of the ranch, charging toward the target ranches.
The stable doors opened. Caesar rode a black horse and shot out the gate at high speed. Lloyd and the others behind him also quickly followed.
The black horse beneath him was named Night Fury—a mount that had accompanied Caesar for several years, currently in its prime.
While Caesar was gone, it hadn't gotten out much for fresh air. Now that it was out, it ran joyfully with abandon.
After leaving the ranch, Night Fury's speed increased another level, catching up to the pickups ahead—that was Morales's team.
The night wind tore at Night Fury's mane. Caesar held his hat with one hand, pulled the reins with the other, and shouted excitedly.
"Woohoo—"
Leaning forward, Caesar faced the wind and shouted loudly, "Night Fury, accelerate."
Night Fury had a spiritual connection with Caesar. It immediately increased speed, surpassing several pickups.
Morales drove the vehicle, watching Caesar's heroic bearing. He looked down at his own bulging belly and shook his head with a smile.
"Deputy leader, do you think we could ride horses too?"
In Morales's passenger seat was a white youth, about twenty years old or so, who looked healthy and energetic.
Barrett looked at Caesar's figure with longing on his face.
Morales glanced back at him, not wanting to discourage him. "When the ranch has more horses, we'll definitely have chances to learn riding. Maybe we'll even be assigned a horse."
"You'd better work hard."
Barrett showed a confident smile, patting his chest and guaranteeing proudly, "Don't worry, deputy leader. I'll definitely kill several more people today."
Hearing Barrett's guarantee, Morales rubbed his head. He felt this kind of guarantee was somehow weird.
Tate's riding skills were also quite good. Among the four, she was second only to the experienced Lloyd. She followed closely behind Lloyd.
Lloyd looked back and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Colby, Ryan—you two need to go back and relearn how to ride horses!"
Colby, young and spirited, gritted his teeth and swung his riding crop, trying to chase forward.
Ryan didn't care at all, hanging unhurriedly at the rear of the horse team, keeping parallel with the pickups.
In the ranch north of Caesar's ranch, several not-very-large wooden cabins sat close together.
Inside the houses rang waves of snoring sounds, rising and falling like performing a symphony.
Beer bottles rolled on the ground. The table still held plates with food remnants. Clearly they'd spent a nice dinner time last night.
Cliff's snoring suddenly stopped. He slowly sat up, dragging one shoe, leisurely walking outside the room.
His eyes were half-open, looking like he hadn't fully woken up. He yawned from time to time, lifted his shirt, and scratched his belly.
