The letter arrived on a Tuesday.
Sera knew it was Tuesday because she had started keeping track of days the way you kept track of small things when the larger ones were out of your control — carefully, deliberately, as if the counting itself was a form of staying grounded. She marked them in the back of one of Aldric's old notebooks with a single line each morning, and Tuesday was the fourteenth line, which meant she had been in Dunmore for two weeks and had been alone for most of them.
She was splitting firewood when the trader's cart rolled through the village.
She heard it before she saw it — the particular creak of a heavily laden wheel on the stone path, the slow plod of a tired horse. She straightened up and watched it pass without particular interest until the trader called out to her, which she hadn't expected.
"You the girl staying in Aldric's place?"
"Yes," she said.
He held out a folded paper. "Letter. Came through Varnfield."
She set down the axe and crossed the yard and took it.
She recognized the handwriting before she'd finished unfolding it.
Sera —
We're being sent on a mission. Voss has had reports of shadow activity near Dunmore — sightings of the smaller creatures on the forest roads south of the village. Nobody's been attacked, which Voss says has never happened before, and he wants to know why. Aldric and I are going with a group of four. We'll come through Dunmore on the way and collect you — it's not safe to leave you there alone if the creatures are already that close.
We should arrive within four or five days of this letter. Stay inside at night.
There's someone I want you to meet when we get there. His name is Finn. He's insufferable but he grows on you, apparently, though I maintain that's a matter of lowered standards rather than genuine improvement.

P.S. Are you eating properly? Aldric will ask me and I'd like to be able to answer.
Sera read it twice.
Then she sat down on the woodpile and read it a third time.
We'll come through Dunmore on the way and collect you.
Eight words. Completely straightforward. The kind of sentence that communicated exactly what it said and nothing more, written by someone who was not in the habit of putting more into words than the words required.
She sat with it for a moment.
The feeling that moved through her was complicated in the way that feelings were when they arrived in contradictory pairs — relief and something more unsettled than relief, warmth and something more anxious than warmth. She was glad. She was genuinely, simply glad, in a way that surprised her with its directness, that they were coming back. That Cal was coming back. That the quiet of the empty house was going to have an end date.
And underneath that — tangled up with it, impossible to fully separate — the part about the shadows.
Sightings of the smaller creatures on the forest roads south of the village. Nobody's been attacked, which Voss says has never happened before.
She thought about the shadow at the treeline. The one that had come close enough. The one that had stopped.
She thought about the pendant warm against her collarbone.
She folded the letter and went inside.

She didn't go inside.
She stood in Aldric's kitchen for approximately four minutes, during which she put the kettle on, took the kettle off, sat down, stood up, went to the window, came back from the window, and then accepted that her mind was doing something she wasn't going to be able to read through or work through or sit quietly with.
She needed to walk.
She put on her coat, tucked the small knife she'd taken to carrying into her belt — a habit that had developed without conscious decision, the way some habits did — and went out the back of the house toward the eastern path.
The morning was cold and grey and honest about both, the kind of autumn day that didn't pretend to be anything warmer than it was.
Good walking weather, if you dressed for it.
The eastern path wound up through the trees along the ridge's spine, open enough underfoot to move quickly, the forest on either side familiar now from the dozen times she'd walked it in the past two weeks. She'd made it hers, this path, in the small quiet way you made things yours when you had very little to call your own.
She walked without direction. Just moved, letting the cold air do the work of clearing the inside of her head, letting her feet find their own pace on the familiar ground.
They're coming back.
She turned it over as she walked. Examined it from different angles the way you examined something you weren't sure what to do with. She was glad. She'd established that. But there was something else underneath the gladness — a low, unsteady hum of something she didn't have a clean name for, something that had to do with the fact that when Cal came back, things would change. When he came back they would leave. She would leave this small, manageable life she'd built out of routines and Aldric's books and the fourteenth line in the notebook and go back out into a world that was large and dangerous and full of things she couldn't remember.
She wasn't sure she was ready.
She wasn't sure she had a choice.
She walked further than she'd intended, following the path past the ridge's crest and down the other side into the deeper part of the forest, where the trees were older and the canopy thicker and the light came through in pale, diffused pieces that made everything feel very far from the village.
She slowed.
It was quieter here. Not the ordinary quiet of a forest morning — something more deliberate than that, more specific. The birds had stopped. The small sounds that lived in the undergrowth and provided the background texture of a walk in the woods had gone absent, leaving behind a silence with a particular quality she was beginning to recognize.
She stopped walking.
Her hand went to the knife at her belt.
She stood still and listened.
Nothing moved. Nothing sounded. The trees stood around her in their old, patient way, and the grey light filtered down through their bare branches, and somewhere ahead of her — not far, twenty feet, maybe thirty — the silence had a center to it. A specific point from which the wrongness seemed to radiate.
She moved toward it.
Later, she wouldn't be able to explain why. The reasonable thing was to turn around and walk quickly back to the village and stay inside as Cal's letter had specifically asked her to. She knew it was the reasonable thing. She walked toward the silence anyway, picking her way carefully between the roots of the old trees, following the feeling the way she'd learned to follow the things her body knew without being told.
She pushed through a stand of birches.
And found the hollow.
It was tucked between the roots of an oak so old its trunk had split into three separate columns, each as wide as a doorway, their roots spreading outward in great arching waves that created natural shelters between them. In the deepest of these hollows, half buried under a drift of dead leaves and entirely too still, something lay that was not an animal and not a person and not anything Sera had a word for.
She stopped.
It was humanoid in shape — approximately, the way a sketch was approximately a portrait. Its form held light differently than solid things did, gathering the pale grey daylight that filtered through the canopy and keeping some of it, a faint luminescence that had nothing to do with the weather. Its features were fine, almost architectural, the planes of its face too precise to be accidental. Where skin should have been there was something that suggested air made briefly visible — translucent, shifting slightly at the edges, like the surface of still water disturbed by a breath.
One side of it was wrong.
The light there was dimmer. Stuttering, almost, like a flame in a draft — present but uncertain, the luminescence faltering in a way that made Sera's chest tighten before she'd fully processed why. The leaves beneath it were disturbed, scraped and scattered in a pattern that told a clear story: it had come from the east, moving fast, and it had stopped here because it had nothing left to move with.
Injured. Badly.
Its eyes opened.
Dawn-colored — that was the only way she could describe it. The precise shade of sky in the moment between dark and light, when the night hadn't finished leaving and the day hadn't fully arrived. They found her face without searching, without the startled panic of a wounded creature cornered, without aggression.
With recognition.
The word assembled itself in Sera's mind without her choosing it — recognition — and she didn't know what to do with it because she had never seen this being before in any life she could remember and yet the way it looked at her was the way you looked at something you already knew.
She crouched down slowly.
It didn't move away.
She looked at the injured side more closely — the dimmed, faltering section of its form — and then she looked at the ground around the hollow. At the marks in the leaves and earth beyond it. At the particular pattern of disturbance that she now recognized as different from the creature's own trail.
Something had been here before her.
Several somethings, moving in the circling, drifting pattern she associated with shadow creatures. They had been here and they had left, and the timing of that departure — recent enough that the leaves were still settling in places — suggested they had not left because they had finished.
They had left because something had interrupted them.
She'd walked into the forest when the birds stopped. The birds had stopped when—
Oh, she thought.
She looked at the being in the hollow. At its dawn-colored eyes still fixed on her face. At the dimmed, struggling light on its injured side.
They had been hunting it. The shadows had been hunting this specific creature, in this specific forest, and they had stopped when she came close enough to — to whatever she did that made them stop.
The village hadn't been their target.
This had been their target.
Sera sat back on her heels and looked at the being for a long moment. It looked back at her with those too-knowing eyes and did not move and did not make a sound, and the forest around them was still and cold and waiting.
"I'm going to help you," she said. Quietly. Matter-of-factly, the way you said things when you'd decided them and were simply notifying the other party.
It could not possibly have understood her words.
And yet something in its expression shifted — infinitesimal, almost nothing — in the way of something that had been very tightly wound releasing a fraction of its tension.
Sera stood up.
She looked at the hollow, at the being's form, at the practical problem of moving something luminous and injured and approximately human-shaped through a forest and into a village without — she paused on this — without causing a considerable amount of difficulty.
She looked at her own two hands.
She looked back at the being.
"This is going to require some thinking," she said. "Give me a moment."
