The arena had barely settled after the previous match when the platform descended again.
Victor Hale stepped onto the stone battlefield with the same composed posture he carried everywhere else — hands relaxed at his sides, shoulders squared, expression unreadable.
Across from him, Lila Monroe followed more cautiously.
The arena suddenly felt very large again.
Up on the balcony, Theo leaned over the railing.
"Ooooh this one might be rough," he muttered.
Elias stood beside him, still gripping the railing slightly too tightly.
"Why?" Elias asked nervously.
Theo nodded toward Victor.
"That guy looks like he already knows he's going to win."
Victor stood calmly at the center of the arena floor.
Lila shifted her weight slowly, inhaling as she activated her Spark. A soft golden glow flickered briefly along her arms.
Regenerative enhancement.
Small injuries would mend quickly.
Fatigue would take longer to set in.
It wasn't flashy.
But it kept her in the fight.
Mrs. Phineas' voice echoed down from above.
"Third ranking match."
A moment passed.
"Begin."
Victor moved first.
He raised one hand slightly.
The air vibrated.
A sharp invisible wave of compressed sound erupted outward.
BOOM.
The shockwave blasted across the arena, slamming into Lila before she could react. She was thrown backward several meters, skidding hard across the stone floor.
Gasps erupted from the balcony.
Lila pushed herself up immediately, wincing — but already healing.
Victor tilted his head slightly.
"Still standing," he noted.
He raised both hands.
The air trembled again.
Two sonic blasts fired in rapid succession.
BOOM.
BOOM.
Lila rolled aside as the blasts carved jagged craters into the arena floor. Chunks of stone exploded outward. She rushed forward — closing the gap before he could reset.
Victor's eyes narrowed.
He redirected.
The next pulse struck the ground between them instead.
The explosion launched Lila sideways like a violent gust of wind. She hit the stone hard, sliding several meters before stopping.
Up above, Mira watched closely.
"He's controlling the distance," she said quietly.
Elias blinked.
"What does that mean?"
"It means," Mira replied, "she will never reach him."
Down in the arena, Lila lay still for a moment.
Her Spark flickered at the edges of her arms — not the soft healing glow from before. Something brighter. Something more urgent.
She could feel it waiting.
If she pushed it fully — really pushed it — she could overclock her body the way she knew she could. Close that distance in a single burst before Victor set up another shot. She knew it instinctively. Her body already knew the shape of it.
Her hands pressed flat against the stone.
And then she didn't.
The glow softened back to its usual quiet warmth.
Victor watched her rise slowly to her feet.
Something shifted almost imperceptibly in his expression. Not concern. Attention. He had seen the flare. He had seen her choose against it.
He filed that away.
Then he raised both hands.
The sonic blast struck the ground directly in front of her.
The shockwave erupted upward, slamming into her chest, launching her off her feet.
She landed hard.
This time she stayed down.
Her healing energy flickered weakly as it worked through the damage.
Victor slowly lowered his hand.
"I believe," he said calmly, "that will be enough."
Mrs. Phineas spoke immediately.
"Lila Monroe is unable to continue."
A pause.
"Winner: Victor Hale."
Victor gave a small nod and turned toward the elevator platform.
Up above, Theo winced.
"Man… that guy fights like a turret."
Lila eventually sat up, rubbing her shoulder quietly. She didn't look frustrated.
She looked like someone who already knew why she had lost.
She made her way to the platform without a word.
The screen shifted.
Two new names appeared.
NAOMI VANCE
CALEB WARD
Naomi exhaled slowly.
"Guess that's me."
Caleb Ward stepped forward at the same time. Broad-shouldered and solidly built, his stance already steady even before the platform descended.
Elias glanced toward Mira.
"Do you know what their Sparks are?"
Mira nodded.
"Naomi's ability affects emotional states."
Elias blinked.
"…That sounds terrifying."
"It can be," Mira replied.
The platform reached the arena floor.
Naomi stood gracefully across from Caleb, brushing invisible dust from her sleeve.
"Try not to be too upset if you lose," she said with a small smile.
Caleb frowned slightly.
"…Why would I be upset?"
Mrs. Phineas' voice echoed once more.
"Fourth ranking match."
"Begin."
Naomi's Spark activated instantly.
A faint violet aura shimmered outward from her body like a quiet pulse.
Caleb froze.
For a brief moment, his confident stance faltered. The emotion hit him like a sudden wave.
Doubt.
Uncertainty.
The creeping feeling that maybe — maybe this fight was already lost.
Up above, Elias blinked.
"What just happened?"
Mira answered quietly.
"She's projecting emotional pressure."
Down in the arena, Naomi stepped forward slowly.
"You're already thinking about losing," she said softly.
Caleb clenched his fists.
The emotion pressed harder.
Anxiety.
Frustration.
Fear.
But something else activated at the same time.
His Spark responded.
Adaptive enhancement.
His body — and mind — began adjusting.
Caleb took a slow breath.
Then another.
The emotional pressure didn't vanish.
But it weakened.
His muscles tightened as his Spark adapted to the influence.
Naomi's expression shifted slightly.
"…Interesting."
Caleb stepped forward.
The ground cracked beneath his foot.
Naomi's aura pulsed again — stronger this time. A wave of crushing despair rolled across the arena.
For a moment Caleb slowed —
Then pushed forward anyway.
Each step became easier.
His body continued adjusting.
Adapting.
Resisting.
Naomi's calm smile faded.
Caleb closed the distance.
He swung.
Naomi jumped back just in time as his fist shattered the stone where she'd been standing. She activated her aura again — but Caleb was already moving. Faster now. Stronger.
Her influence barely slowed him anymore.
A second punch forced her to retreat. A third shattered the ground at her feet.
Naomi stumbled.
Caleb grabbed her wrist.
He didn't strike again.
He simply held her there.
Naomi tried to push her Spark one final time.
The aura flickered.
Then faded.
Caleb looked at her calmly.
"…It stopped working."
Naomi sighed softly.
"…Yes. It did."
Mrs. Phineas' voice echoed through the arena.
"Naomi Vance has yielded."
"Winner: Caleb Ward."
The balcony erupted with murmurs as the fourth match concluded.
Theo leaned over the railing.
"Okay that was cool."
Victor crossed his arms thoughtfully.
"Adaptive Sparks are dangerous."
Below them, hidden mechanisms hummed quietly as the arena floor began sealing its cracks.
The screen flickered.
Two more names appeared.
IZZY CADE
JUN PARK
Jun adjusted his glasses calmly.
"Well," he said.
"This should be interesting."
