Chapter 23 - the moment we almost fell

The drive back to the mansion was silent.

But this time—

It wasn't cold.

It was heavy.

Unspoken words filled the space between them.

Kiara sat beside Aarav, her fingers slightly trembling… though she tried to hide it.

That moment outside the hotel—

It hadn't left her.

The way he showed up.

The way he fought.

The way he looked at her.

Like losing her wasn't an option.

The car stopped.

Neither of them moved immediately.

Then Aarav finally spoke.

"Come inside."

His voice was softer than usual.

Kiara nodded.

They walked in.

The mansion was quiet again.

But this time—

It didn't feel empty.

It felt… tense.

Alive.

As soon as they stepped into the living room—

Kiara turned.

"Aarav—"

But before she could say anything—

He pulled her into him.

Tight.

Sudden.

Like he had been holding it in for too long.

Kiara froze.

Her breath caught.

"Aarav…"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

But he didn't let go.

His arms tightened around her.

As if he was making sure she was really there.

Safe.

"You could've been hurt."

His voice was low.

Shaken.

Kiara slowly lifted her hands…

And placed them on his chest.

"I'm fine."

But Aarav shook his head slightly.

"That's not the point."

For a moment—

They just stood there.

Close.

Too close.

Kiara could hear his heartbeat.

Fast.

Unsteady.

Just like hers.

Slowly…

She pulled back just enough to look at him.

"Aarav… why do you care so much?"

The question hung between them.

Dangerous.

Because they both knew the answer.

But neither had said it.

Aarav looked at her.

His eyes intense.

"I told you."

His voice dropped.

"I can't let anything happen to you."

"That's not an answer," Kiara whispered.

Aarav stepped closer.

Again.

Closing the distance she had just created.

"It's the only one you're getting."

Kiara shook her head slightly.

"No…"

Her voice trembled just a little.

"That's not true."

Aarav's jaw tightened.

"Then what do you want me to say?"

Kiara's eyes met his.

Raw.

Honest.

"Say the truth."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Aarav looked at her like he was fighting something inside himself.

Something he didn't want to admit.

"I—"

He stopped.

His hand moved to her face slowly.

Brushing a strand of hair away.

His touch was soft.

Careful.

Completely opposite to everything he usually was.

Kiara's breath hitched.

Because this—

This wasn't hate anymore.

"Aarav…"

She whispered.

As if saying his name would stop whatever was happening.

But it didn't.

He moved closer.

Their foreheads almost touching.

Their breaths mixing.

The world fading.

Just like before.

But this time—

Stronger.

More real.

"I shouldn't…" he murmured.

Kiara's eyes slowly closed.

"Then don't…"

But neither of them stepped back.

Because neither of them wanted to.

For a second—

Everything else disappeared.

The past.

The lies.

The betrayal.

Even the war.

It was just them.

And the pull they couldn't ignore anymore.

And then—

A phone rang.

Sharp.

Loud.

Breaking everything.

Kiara stepped back instantly.

Reality crashing in.

She looked away.

Breathing uneven.

"This… can't happen."

Aarav didn't move.

His eyes still on her.

"Why?"

Kiara shook her head.

"Because we don't trust each other."

Her voice steadied.

"And without that… this won't survive."

Silence.

Aarav knew she was right.

And that made it worse.

Kiara picked up her phone.

Her expression changed instantly.

"What is it?" Aarav asked.

Kiara looked at him.

Serious.

"Aurora Holdings… has been attacked."

Aarav's eyes darkened.

"By who?"

Kiara's voice dropped.

"You already know."

Vikram Khanna.

And just like that—

The moment they almost had…

Slipped away.

Because their war—

Was far from over.
